  • I found a 1984 Hobie 16 Catamaran. It was in a barn for the last 20 years and needed to be rescued. The boat was missing a lot of parts, but I was able to find most used and only had to get a few things new. Watch as I turn this oxidized fiberglass and Hobie frame into a shinny fast sailing Cat again.

So those rivets are actually original. They replaced it with sister screws later on, because they didn’t think that the cams would need to be serviced

Thank you for the comment and I am sorry it took me so long to respond. I was shocked at how easy this boat is to rig and how much fun/fast it is. I normally sail mono hulls so this boat was a blast.

Thanks so much, I really had a good time doing it. Then taking her out for her first sail in a long time was awesome! Good luck!

Hi Dan, thanks for this inspiring Video. I am about to buy a 16 dated from 1986 and I will have 2 or 3 things to do on the hull. Is there a way to contact you to get your advises ?

Please feel free to contact me. There are some very important things to look out for on these boats, some are not worth repairing. Probably the best way would be through the comments. The biggest thing to watch for are soft spots in the hulls. If there are soft spots it might not be worth fixing.

@@exploringlandandsea4811 Thanks Dan. No soft spot. I have 2 small impacts to fix in one hull and another , more important behind the ruder. Would it be possible to send you a photo ?

Yes please do. Let me know if for some reason you cannot attach them in the comments. From the sounds of it the impact near the rudder is the one of real concern.
