Armstrong Siddeley (1938) Review / Drive / Valuation with David Harper (2021)
Come with me to see this charming little car at Carrosserie in Barnard Castle. It’s a two owner 14hp in blue with blue original leather. I’ll show you around, give her a quick review, go out for a quick spin and we’ll put a value on her in today’s market (2021)
Armstrong Siddeley motor cars were made between 1919 and 1960, so this pre war 1938 model was made around half way through the life cycle of the company. Driving one really is quite a special experience. Jump in and see what you think!
With thanks to Dick Francis at Carrosserie Classic Car Restorers in Barnard Castle
PS. You might know me from BBC TV shows like Bargain Hunt, Flog It and the Antiques Roadtrip, but if you subscribe to my channel, I'll give you free tutorials, advice, top tips, trade secrets, quiz’s and antiques, car and art reviews...as well as a bit of unusual history!
The channel is developing and I’m always keen to hear suggestions, so please get in touch!
    Cheers, David Harper

Wonderful old car very impressed like the sound of the preselector Wilson box

As an apprentice in my grandfather’s garage, he was an approved agent for Armstrong Siddeley cars. One customer, an elderly dowager, owned a 1931 Model 30, a beast of 5 liters. She sort of took to me and after service work I would drive the car back to her country home and walk the mile back to my own. It was a superb old car and cruised easily at 60 with few rattles or bumps.
My grandfather stopped selling Armstrong at the onset of the 60s: he sold Mercedes Benz as the only import at rated the quality of the Armstrong alongside contemporary Benz’s.
This example is nice and perhaps needing a little attention. I also feel that at 12,500 it is a tad expensive but then, these old cars can command unusual prices.

I've traveled many miles with my grandad in one of these cars, I'm now 66 yrs old in the late fifties my grandad owned on of these, in fact it was exactly the same colour as the one in the video we lived in Rochdale at the time, I remember standing on the back seat along with Prince his Alsation dog with our heads out of the sun roof. Most Weekends we would be out on a picnic ore we would travel to Southport to see family. When I watched the video I was young once again, thanks for bring back those lovely memories.

Thanks for the lovely comment Stuart. That’s what these old cars are all about. Memories and a little time travel just for a few moments! All the best

Like yourself I travelled in one of these in the late 50s. I was also 66 at the time of your comment. It was also exactly like this one in the dark blue. It was my father's car. We still have a picture of myself and my sister watching him respraying the car in 1958.

Armstrong Siddeley's were always really beautifully made. I am currently refurbishing my 1956 Mark 2 Sapphire at present. 3.4 nearly 3.5 litre hemi engine with twin strombergs and preselector. Serious 100mph plus performance! But the quality in these cars isnt just the performance. Its how they are built. How the body and parts are made. Every bolt or screw or piece of jewelry is really well made. So my car is largely original because it lasts.
One of my current jobs has been the removal and acid treatment and relining of the fuel tank with RedCoat. IMO if you have any old car that 70 plus years old it will have rust in the fuel tank that will stop the carburettors from working reliably. It essential IMO to treat the tank to a full restoration. And you will then end up with a reliable classic that performs to specification.
ps great video. This car definitely deserves full refurbishment. Indeed it is essential if you want to preserve this historic artifact. From the leather to the underbody steel it all requires proper care and refurbishment. This car is a perfect candidate.

@@DavidHarperAntiquesTV Of the classic cars I restore I would rate the Armstrong Siddeley and the Austin Atlantic at the top of my list. They are just nice to work on. Well made and parts are available. Mercedes are not good for lots of reasons from a car restoration perspective. cheers

My dad bought the 17hp limousine in the 1950’s . We still have it!

I bought one of these when I was 18 years old in 1966. I paid £50 for her. After I’d driven it home for the first time my dad, who was an engineer, looked it over and said “the man who sold you that should be in prison”. Nevertheless he gave me a lot of help in carrying out quite a bit of much needed maintenance. The engine in that model is a 1666 cc inline 6 developing 48 bhp. The 14 hp mentioned was a purely arbitrary figure arrived at by a calculation involving the bore and stroke and was used to calculate the road tax back then. It was actually known as RAC hp as I presume they were the organisation who developed the calculation. They are very high quality cars probably much in line with the Daimler’s of the day and, as your driver said, must have been a delight to drive back then with that Wilson pre selector gearbox, a great advance over the prevalent crash gearboxes.

Brilliant Malcolm, thanks for the story. That’s one of the great things with these vintage cars, the stories. I loved your Dads response! Cheers, D

What a beautiful old girl. She’d definitely be a garage queen if I owned her ; cleaned and polished to within an inch to preserve her - not restore. Take her to the odd classic rally. Sadly don’t have 12.5K burning a hole, but great investment if you’re willing to own and care for a good few years.

Love the Wilson Preselector Gearbox what a thing ... the age of Art Deco and just a year before the New York Worlds Trade Fair ... wonder if that was showcased. I have not looked at what the others have said so I would pay £14,500 including some saddle soap! And just over again, lol - as seen amount

Leaving out all the emotive oos & ars it is my view that an additional spend of 2 to 3 thousand is required which makes a fair value as is of no more than 9 thousand.

I get the important that Armstrong Siddeleys are rather under rated and unloved, despite their high quality.

I couldn't even venture a guess but I was surprised it was less than 20,000. As an American who has never even ridden in a right hand drive it was very interesting to see one up close

Funny, I few years ago one was for sale on ebay in the US. It was exactly the same model as this ( one of which my father had years ago ) It had a 350 Chev fitted and only looked different from this because of having wide wheels. No doubt had a GM auto fitted and a ford 9" diff or the like.

Nice, if too upright, exterior. Good but neglected interior will cost a fortune to fully restore, and too bloody slow at 30-40 mph. I'll stop watching now.
