    Hi Mark. The pureed vegetable is called callalloo. It is made from the leaves of the taro plant (also called dasheen bush), okra and Scotch bonnet peppers - all stewed in coconut milk.
    Trinidad and Tobago's population is multi-ethnic, with groups of people who trace their origins to West Africa, India, China, Portugal, Syria, England and elsewhere, as well as the original Amerindian community. Our cuisine is a melting pot of influences from all of these groups. The meal that you had reflects this diversity. The callalloo is West African in origin and the curry comes from India.

      why because i don't want to spend 31 dollars on a pizza? a pizza should be no more than 10-15 dollars.. at most.its not like its a fancy restaurant . its just a takeaway pizza. no matter how good the taste i wouldn't pay that for a pizza unless its fine dining then it makes sence. you can find much cheaper pizza in japan and switzerland wich are already expensive countries. a decent pizza in naples italy is around 4-5 euros. thats 6 USD

    • @gandaruvu
      @gandaruvu 8 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      you have to take into account the high rent in new york. New york is one of the most expensive city to live, so the price need to be seen relative to that, not just in absolute value.

      tokyo and hong kong has higher rents or almost similar than NYC and you can find cheap food in these two cities.. good luck finding cheap restaurants in NYC. anything less than 10 dollars would be pure luck. 31 dollars is extremley expensive for a pizza. its even more expensive than norway.

    • @gandaruvu
      @gandaruvu 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      tega banega I lived in Tokyo before, and yes, you could find cheap food. But remember, you have to see the size of this pizza. A normal medium size pizza, which is much smaller than this one, is like $20 in Japan.

      Callaloo is awesome. I think the ingredients are typically dasheen leaves, okra, pumpkin, and coconut milk along with some green seasoning (some might add blue crab). And Trinidadian curry is my favourite curry in the world. The addition of all the green herbs (especially the blessed thistle or shadon beni) gives it a completely different dimension.

      There is a significant East Indian population in the Caribbean who were brought over by the British from India as laborers. Ditto Africans. V.S. Naipaul is a famous Trinidadian author with Indian roots. His book of short stories, 'Miguel Street,' is set in Trinidad right after WW II, and is a very interesting, fun read about Indian-Trinidadian culture of that time. In one of the stories, Naipaul muses about ingredients mysteriously crossing cultural barriers despite different racial groups keeping to themselves.

      Well was that from a store or street vendor? Also I'm going to quote an excerpt from an article on the cost some street cart vendors pay the city just to have the privilege to sell from a certain spot.
      "Call it the half-million-dollar hot dog cart. Mohammad Mastafa of Astoria, Queens, has to sell almost that much in drinks and snacks annually to break even on the pushcart he owns at Fifth Avenue and East 62nd Street near the Central Park Zoo. He pays the city’s parks department $289,500 a year just for the right to operate his single cart there."

    I remember when I was a lot younger as a student at Brooklyn College, I rode my bike or walked by this place dozens of times on the way to the subway without knowing that it was god-tier status for pizza. And I believe at some point I stopped in and got a slice, which I'm sure I enjoyed, but this was almost 20 years ago. It's in the middle of an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, so you wouldn't necessarily expect to have a world-class pizza joint sitting there.

    Here in central Illinois, about 2.5 hours from Chicago, we have places that sell 16 inch gourmet home made pizza with all the toppings, for $16 to $24. And one place I go to has 1/2 price pizza on Sunday. It's thin crust, hand made, with top of the line fresh toppings, with home made sauce and crust. A couple of the places have even won awards for their pizza, and it is some of the best pizza I ever had. So if you get it on Sunday when it is 1/2 price a 16 inch pizza is only $8 to $12 dollars.

    • @gingerginger999
      @gingerginger999 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      they buy at a wholesale rate for all product including "artisanal" cheeses;the biggestexpense is rent and they own the building;they charge that silly price because marketing works: you are willing to pay $31for something that costs far less and is no better than many a NYC pizza..;as for skill, after anyone cooks 500 pies they got it down; do you think the place is gonna shut down when he drops dead?

    • @gingerginger999
      @gingerginger999 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "artisanal" products here are cheese, and the whole price for the "best' does not warrant a $31 dollar pizza;
      anyone can make a great pizza, there is nothing special or magical about the process....do it enough times and you get pretty good at the process....i make my own pasta/pizza/and i cook really well and i know plenty of people that cook as well as me, and better...no other training other than hard work and practice; most people can "do it" , perhaps you should at least try...it's not hard or mystical, just work, which you may not be acquainted with(hence your position)
      The thing is, you do not have a standard for a "pizza", no one does, but i know a great or even good pizza does not cost 31 dollars...that's marketing, for dupes,like you!
