- I help out some Gunas with some fuel and they reward me with some fruit, 2 bread fruit a bunch of bananas and some lemons. I have never had bread fruit so I am eager to try it and so are my friends the bees.
We test out the Rocna in weed and it is surprising, it fails first go so I talk a bit about that and I also look at how much fish is wasted when we fillet them and throw away the carcass. Too much I think.

Love the little study on fish eating! Practical information that you won't easily find anywhere else!
The Rocna Vulcan one thats a newer model gets rid of the rollbar and has a spade type look to it, did really well on test channels, bloody hell Plukky you have me looking up hours of anchor test footage and I dont even have a boat 😂

..... good on you Peter .... growing up when eating chicken, as now, I would clean the bones completely and any one at the table would comment on the cleanliness ... as for fishing, tend to cook whole and then debone ... can not say that I suck out the eyeballs though .. laughing .... liked the clean up crew at the stern of the boat .... have fun be safe, save our oceans .....
I think, bang for the buck, Rocna is a good budget choice. I have had incredible luck with the Spade anchor. No hoop, curved and wedge shaped Shank for penetration, very heavy tip weight. No clogging issues. Super easy launch/retrieve. Loved San Blas. Spent a year there. Did a lot of diving. Wonderful people.
Thanks for filming that Rocna test - was really interesting to see one of our theories confirmed. We have a 55kg Rocna (we weigh 32 tonnes!), and generally we're extremely happy with it. We're in SE Asia, so never anchor in grass, but we have had a couple of occasions where we dragged anchored in mud, and we speculated it was because the fluke had filled up so much it couldn't reset. It would be much harder to film this in muddy water, so it was great to see the same mechanism of action happening with seagrass.
As you said, it's hardly the type comprehensive test that purists would demand, but it does add to the body of evidence and knowledge out there, so thanks again.

Thanks for the view of Rocna fail! Once that grass hits the rollbar it's done. A reversal isn't necessary, the grass turns it into a useless ball and it will not reset.
We swapped to a Sarca Excel after several grassy bottom dragging episodes. Mostly storm conditions and high wind however the deciding moment was waking up half a mile from where we anchored during calm conditions.
The Excel buries itself completely, shank and all, beneath a very grassy/sand bottom. After 9 months not one drag.
The Rocna is a good anchor but in that particular bottom its crap. I suspect other rollbar anchors would not be better.

As a commercial fisherman for years you are right. For most rock fish the recovery rate is at least 50%. It's amazing how much fish you get out of a small rock fish when you cook it cleaned but whole. Good on you for telling it to the world.

The roll bar type anchors do clog up when resetting as you demonstrated. The numerous bolts on the Manson can also cause failures as they (the bolt heads) hold alot of mud & debri when resets are necessary. The best are Ultra & Spade anchors, no roll bar, they are unneeded with them due to design.

Meh.. I'll stick to the SARCA Excel (as a secondary & weedy bottom anchor) and Super SARCA (as a primary anchor), thanks all the same. Nobody does anchors better than Aussies.

Eventually all anchors can fail under certain conditions and depending on what is required of them.
A good sailor knows well what he can demand from his anchor, and chooses well how and where to anchor.
Rocna is a good anchor, but like all anchors it can have its limits🙂

good nutritional value.. most of us jamaicans love de roasted and steam fish, but de head and tail is what we really like. the eyeballs, you forgot the eyeballs. fish head soup is good with the vegetables. ive never eaten a rotten breadfruit.. here we roast it.. good vibz blog man.

I always eat the eyeballs but the trick is not to cook them, just warm them a bit and they are supersweet and sticky

Totally agree with not wasting the fish frames , I only keep the head and wings though , wrap them in foil and put them in hot sand in the fire , the fillets I'll put in the 12v fridge .

I've noticed the same problem. In sticky mud the roll-bar fills up with mud. If it needs to reset it will not. Other than that a great anchor but overall I liked my Delta better.
Hey Peter, Good on ya for not being wasteful. After removing the fillets, we like to throw the carcass in a pot and make a meaty soup stock. Takes a while to pick out the fins, bones etc. (a sieve helps) but toss in a few veggies, let it boil then return the flesh to the pot just before serving. Damn fine eating!! Maybe better in a cooler climate than in the tropics though. Like your smoker. Think we'll replicate that someday. Cheers!!!
Yeah I don't like waste at all abd besides, the meat is fattier and juicier near the most bones so its tastier

Derrick lara great in Singapore we either slice it and salt fry them or dip them in rice flour batter and fry them either way it’s finger linkin good its natural.

A very good analysis. My wife is Chinese and most Asians grow up knowing how to devour a fish - it's just amazing what little is left after they've processed all the bones etc. Not the prettiest of sights though....! 🤓
Good test. My skilled couch sailing abilities tells me it's a bit small. The anchor...Also applying my couch engineering skills in nearly fell out of said highly skilled couch looking at your rigging in the bread fruit clips. Hmmm, I shiver in my couch, scary thoughts of late night mast collapses. Good thing my couch mast is well attached. And when is Ms M returning? Not that your quality productions are at all lacking, but...and thanks for the first date tip! Keep the advice coming, I'm taking notes from the master...appreciate the 1080/60 btw

I’ve got a Rocna Vulcan , it holds well . I think for weeds this old fashioned Fisherman’s anchors are tried and tested. That’s all people on flinders and king island use . In regards to eating as much of the fish as possible, I agree , and I have eaten fish like that for years , but another thing to consider especially with sea food is , fish love eating other fish , so is it really waste ? Even at home my fish carcasses go into the worm farm and end up plant food . What your doing is highly sustainable, but Don’t invite Greta on to the boat I don’t think she’ll dig eating grouper 😂
The trouble is that it is an excuse to shoot huge fish and they are excellent breeders, why do that when there is plenty on a fish that is less than half the size.....and its tastier too ...there will be a point when there are no fish left
SAILING into FREEDOM fair call . Probably why Asian folks make Fish cakes out of most of their catch’s. Or soup . I always follow the Given specs by the fisheries people. There’s plenty that folks don’t like catching either . Spearing a bit different I suppose. Can’t throw em back , more skill envolved and positive ID is very important.

@@SAILINGintoFREEDOM Fish "bone broth" would extract healthy fats, protein(collagen) and minerals that remain in the "inedible" parts. Most whole meats I consume are "bone-in" cuts and I make bone broth out of the scraps(beef/chicken/turkey/fish/lamb).
The Rockna without the hoop is a Vulcan. I bought a Vulcan 33kg for a Schionning 1480. It has always set 1st go and not dragged yet. The boat fluffs around on anchor more than most though, sailing all over the place with the breeze rather than the tide. I don't usually see weed that thick.
I will attest to the Vulcan. I have a 25kg Vulcan on a 42ft trawler. Sets quickly and never had a problem. Yes that hoop must be an issue if you reset a few times. I have also heard good things about the Mantus and Spade and they are sponsoring a few sailing channels.
@@xabeque8 Got a S100 Spade on a 35' sailboat. Never have a problem with dragging, failure to set. Love my Spade
So the weakness is grassy bottom. so just use good judgement when anchoring

It's refreshing to see a sailing lifestyle channel that isn't mainly about the skippers bikini clad missus wandering around jiggling "spontaneously" in front of the camera. The only complaint is the swimming past the camera scenes are clearly preconceived and setup in advance and then swum. Meh it makes for good watching, but you must have the patience of a saint to bother with it :-D Good work on the efficient eating of the fish.

@12:55 if only more people would have this primal consideration on the animals we consume!! It's all about efficiency and maximising the utilisation of resources, zero waste is the good waste!! In fact, the bones and skin would be no waste as they'd be consumed by other animals!!!
Others argue that when they fillet, they throw the carcass overboard and it gets consumed...the trouble with that argument is they need to get more fish for the same quantity of value...

The argument of leftovers /carcass utilization by another organism in the food web utterly disregards the simple concept of Return On Investment (as you quantitatively proved in the video). Throwing away a percentage of food imposes the need for catching another fish, therefore wasting energy and time in the process. Furthermore, not even the consideration of market price makes sense, e.g. sharks have been massively overfished due to demand of their fins for the SE Asian market, where the whole shark was thrown away and only the fins were considered of value. From the environmental or ecological point of view this is atrocious, but certainly it's economically stupid.
I'd be up for the challenge to compete with Margarida about leaving the fish bone perfectly clean, that's how my parents taught me: No waste!! (inland, after chopping the bones the cats would make good use of it or as fertiliser for the trees)

Checkout SV Panope on TH-cam for an unbelievably exhaustive unbiased testing sequence of about 50 videos on anchor performance! A dozen different anchors tested in a controlled way in many different bottom conditions. It is truly a service to yachtsman that everyone with a boat should watch! I have never seen any other testing even comes close.

The sweet meat around the fins is true. Growing up the fish was always cooked whole unless smoked then it was felit but only on one side which we would eat first , the side with the bones would keep longer. If the scales were scraped off before cooking we ate the skin.

You mustn't be on Pete Smith's Christmas card list. Swap you a Hydrabubble anchor for your Rocna. I had a CQR which was crap at anchoring in 4 litre paint tins, which some kind soul has deposited en-masse in the only anchorage in the Newry Islands.
In spain its forbidden to anchor in the seaweed/gras. Just look for sandy patches....
I always prefer to bake or barbi my fish sealed in foil with butter and spices, all thats's left is the spine with bones attached and whats left of the head after the cheeks and eyeball have been enjoyed. Respect pee pole, haha. CHEERS AND FAIR WINDS Steve h.

(@2:50) I reckon a lot of it has to do with your attitude as well. I’ve helped a girlfriend tend a couple of her hives before and she admitted before we started that she was a bit nervous about me getting stung. Because she was a bit nervous, she was the one who got stung, whilst I was not even a bit stressed and the bees seemed to accept me without hesitation. It’s similar with dogs - if you’re frightened of them, the most placid little lap dog will suddenly become a killer attack dog....

Yes! There’s some fascinating stuff on the net about interactions with sharks (Google Delores the Tiger shark!) I hope it doesn’t sound arrogant, but I think I’m fortunate enough to intuitively “Get” most animals (Sharks, dogs, birds) because I seem to be pretty transparent and non threatening to most... ;-)
They actually smell the person in fear, then a swatting attempt. Doing bee removal for years bystanders get stung when I am not.

Just a heads up on healthy eco friendly eating - If you do your research you will discover that smoking your food imparts a substantial level of carcinogens (all in that smoke) to your food - cooking with a "clean" heat is safer. If you had a blender on board you could make healthy eco friendly fish cakes with no "fried chips" - - Blend your fish carcass with approx. 35% flesh as you have worked out, in a blender (I have one on board), to a peanut butter consistency - boil your potatoes and mash them into to the "fish paste" you have created the add some caramelised onions, salt and any herbs you like, then pan fry them and .......voila tasty fish cakes - (with plenty of calcium). You can add other chopped up veges if you like.

Good on you Joe. If I had a house or a decent boat and gear it would be on the table. Blending is an issue on myboat, not enough amps and the smoking keeps the fish going for 3 days without a fridge so its a necessary evil for us.
