i'm 57 and only watch classics nowadays..long given up on watching the utter tripe made today..non stop cgi does my head in. love these old films and love this channel. keep em coming perfect for a rainy sunday afternoon
Well said. I don't consider most of today's ]so called movies to be art. However some including black and white movies which are still made are very close to these classics particularly French, Italian and Spanish black and white films. I think about twenty to thirty black and white movies are still made a year in Europe.
Times move on, it is no longer a 'scary movie' but the pleasure of seeing these two great actresses giving such a wonderful performance, almost makes the plot secondary .Same with all the great actors, making their debuts in these classic films, who have gone on to be huge stars of stage and screen. Thank you for all these wonderful trips down memory lane.
There's a wonderful atmospheric creepiness to these old movies,..the music score adds menace and terror ,...and there's an art to making great horrors,...simple storytelling, along with great acting and clever use of sound ,.. And shadows on the visuals ......great stuff
The film is amazing, but very sad, lots of men saw lots of horrible things in the war, friends dying and men being burnt, losing body parts, I can see men going crazy. All us normal people have no idea what these poor men went through, rest in peace
I agree. While there is some horror in it, it's a sad poignant film. Joyce meant well, but what she did to her brother was terrible. She thought she was protecting him from the horror of war.
I've been looking for this film for nearly 40yr. When I was a child my mother told me about it and said it was the scariest thing she'd ever seen. All I knew was 2 ladies with a long nailed crazy they were protecting/hiding. Thankyou!
Love the atmosphere and mood of these old British horrors,...with two real stalwarts of British stage and cinema playing the leads , the marvelous flora Robson and beryl Reid are the real highlight of the film with their verbal interactions and character eccentricities....theirs a real darkly charm and authenticity evident in these old movies, that sadly lack in modern day movie making.......
Love this film. Anything with Flora Robson and Beryl Reid is going to be good with the added bonus of being shot in the Gloriously Wonderful English countryside.
So nice to see this brilliantly atmospheric and suspenseful Britsh horror film once more. Thanks Flick Vault for adding it to your great collection of movies.
It's good to see this again. The first and last time I saw it was on Elvira 's Movie Macabre in the 80's here in Los Angeles. It's really a good film with excellent performances by Dame Flora Robson and Beryl Reid. Thank you so much for uploading it.
Good film. Thanks for posting. I've seen it several times. Its storyline and characterizations are similar to "The Shuttered Room" (1967) in many ways. Flora Robson, coincidentally enough, was prominently featured in that film as well. Both of the movies are horrifying and ultimately tragic. A beautiful transfer. Thanks again !
A great creepy little horror flick that I first watched as a child in the 80s. Tv was full of these older films back then - Hammer, Tigon, Amicus. Wonderful performances from Beryl Reid and Flora Robson.
Ever notice that the really good horror movies don't involve pathetically stupid high schoolers nor those more idiotic sororities and fraternity pledges.
Ronald Ronca Those days left with Jason Voorhees crazy Mom and Freddy Krueger and the Slasher period. Only Hooper and his like made freaky slasher crazy family films that were at least decent. "Motel Hell" etc...!
One of my all time faves. I remember going to see it at the cinema, when it was first released. We used to have films(movies) at midnight, every Friday.
I watched this in the 70s as a ten year old. Scared the bejezuz out of me and that night I worried silly that someone was in our cellar (even though we didn't have a cellar). Great to see it again!
Medium lighting lets nature appear neutral in a film that explores a freak of nature within the landscape with a relaxing countryside vibe of the house that feels organic through the medium-low toned brown furniture and creamy yellow light tints of its interiors. However, the house hides a cellar like belly of the beast where the beast looms and escapes. This contrasts with the innocent looking ladies of the house who have lived here for decades since the war. The positive interior qualities and characters are pleasing and interesting to watch because they are last to be suspected.
Thank-you so much for this upload! I am ashamed to admit, as an old movie lover and Brit, that I have never seen this movie before and I thoroughly enjoyed it, and have added it to my playlist for future perusal. Cheers Friend! 😊😉😎👌👍 Also should add that this kept reminding me of the OTR CBC "Nightfall" episode "Wildcats", kinda similar feel. 🙀🤓
Five minutes in and there's the late, great T.P. Mckenna and the excellent Vernon Dobtcheff. That's a brilliant start to a horror in which to find the legends Dame Flora and dear Beryl.
What is not to like? An old rambling house In the middle of the beautiful English countryside with 2 batty old sisters Reid and Robson and a mad brother in the cellar!!!so much better than the stuff across the pond!!!
“It was all done for him”, Well I don’t think he quite appreciated that! What a set of looney sisters. I just love this crazy film, two of my favourite actress’s and simply for the wonderful acting of Beryl Reid. She is magnificent in this. Beryl played the brash and the sympathetic to aplomb. And in real life she was a tender shy character.
I know Ellie tends to go off-topic in conversation, but I couldn’t help noticing that her conversation with the police started during the daytime. Halfway through she gets up to pull the curtains, because it’s starting to get dark. And by the end, when the officers leave, it’s nighttime. She could talk for England could Ellie!
This film is pretty dreadful but it was one of the first horrors I ever saw and it really scared me so it will always hold a place in my heart. I think the premise itself is very good. Thanks for the very good quality upload.
Perhaps it was the only way to control Steven if he thought his dad was there, I was puzzled by it as well because Steven seems to turn violent every time he sees someone in uniform lol
I long to be able to answer the phone, and know that it's Doris at the telephone exchange. Nice to see Beryl Reid picking dead branches, accompanied by her own theme tune at 09.20 😊
Would love to see The Ghoul (1975) starring the great Peter Cushing, which this reminds me of in this HD quality. Very hard to find movie with only scratchy VHS quality prints out there
The Ghoul is fantastic. One day we'll get a decent transfer. It annoys me that often so many of the English classic horror films are on American blu-ray and prohibitively expensive.
Now then. When I was little in the 70s, I saw a film which had a scene in which a mad relative got out of a room in a cellar. The mad relative woke up the child who started screaming, the dad lead the relative back to its quarters which were behind a red door with a spy hole. This scarred me for life. BUT what was the film because it wasn’t this one. Anybody know?
Like... In Soviet Russia a deserter from the Red Army was hiding in his mother's house cellar for almost 30 years after the war. Mother fed him , but when she died he had to get out. The court took a pity of that half blind and half crazy men, fairly deciding that he had already served his imprisonment term. What a contrast to that Japanese soldier who did not know that the was was over and was hiding in the Philippines in the jungle also for 30 years. Hehe - during the WWII the Western ratio of POWs to killed servicemen was 1 to 3. The Japanese ratio was 1 to 130. Samurai.
I remember this film on one those Saturday night horror programs back in the Day.The two sisters one being weird as all get out dressing up in Uniforms and stealing stockings. 😲😱
Detective: "So, old lady, you know something about the brutal murders that have been happening in this area?" Old lady: "Yes." [Proceeds to tell life story in 25-minute monologue]
Why werent those sisters sent to jail for what they did to their poor brother? No matter what age they are they should be held accountable for what they did?
i'm 57 and only watch classics nowadays..long given up on watching the utter tripe made today..non stop cgi does my head in.

the art as been lost with modern horror, it looks too clean, the actors look like models, rather than real people.
Agreed
And they don’t scare you too,,,
Absolutely agree
These two actresses go together perfectly !
The film is amazing, but very sad, lots of men saw lots of horrible things in the war, friends dying and men being burnt, losing body parts, I can see men going crazy. All us normal people have no idea what these poor men went through, rest in peace
You did understand the story of this film, yes?
Poppy day yesterday 😢😢😢

There's x
I love British films they are the best. Thank you
Love the dialogue. After a graphic description of the murdered man. He says. ‘’. Ok not to worry I have to be on my way now’’
Absolutley brilliant. Beryl Reid is a not only a great comedy actress but serious too. A MUST WATCH .
The scene where she describes what happened to Stephen is the best in the whole film.
Love this film. Anything with Flora Robson and Beryl Reid is going to be good with the added bonus of being shot in the Gloriously Wonderful English countryside.
BLODWYN DAVIES tthreeheaddedshark
Overcoat / Scarf / Tweed Trilby ........the outfit of a gentleman. A sight no longer
seen in Britain.
So nice to see this brilliantly atmospheric and suspenseful Britsh horror film once more.
Thanks Flick Vault for adding it to your great collection of movies.
Thank you Flick Vault for this channel. They bring back great memories of sitting with my parents watching these old Horror films.
I think that was brilliant, the old ones are the best

It's nice to hear a American complement a British film we did do some great classics sadly the horror genre is dead in my country now such a shame xx
First time i saw this movie it was in 1977 when i was 16
I was a baby when this aired 🐣
One of the best British horror genre films ever. Period 👍🏻
so truthful appreciated.
rolls 🌹 💐 🏵 royse quality performance they don't make quality anymore sadly 😔 😢 😞.

Great old 60s thriller. Great actors and atmospheric locations. Also liked the attention to detail of the interior furniture and fittings.
It's 1970.
@@TheVidkid67Actually 1971
@@tur74d56 The release date was 1970 as it's clearly shows in the opening credits.
This channel is the best I've found for movies! Thanks so much!
It certainly is... What an absolute treat, especially when confined to our homes here in Australia with this pandemic.
At the same time, a good horror movie is made without the nauseating scene, a horror movie is made without cutting a corpse or shedding blood.
What a great movie! Thank you for sharing! Really enjoyed this movie!
Love this got this on dvd thanks
One of my all time faves.

Wow. Was that exciting going to a movie at midnight? I would imagine it was a great experience.
Fan-bloody-tastic! They really knew how to make a good horror in those days. xx
Horror it was rated pg haha
"winter goes on and on" Britain in a nutshell.
I watched this in the 70s as a ten year old. Scared the bejezuz out of me and that night I worried silly that someone was in our cellar (even though we didn't have a cellar). Great to see it again!
The movie picked up noticeably with the arrival of a young Tessa Wyatt decked out in her nurses uniform.
Certainly didn't do any harm.
Really why ?
Excellent movie. I had not seen it before. Thanks for uploading. Thumbs up.

Thank you so much , I watched this years ago what a treat , thank you so much for your time and patience, keep well and safe 😊

Love this channel! Another favourite of mine this slice of early 70s horror from Tigon Films. Many thanks for uploading :)
Yes, me too. Whoever runs this channel always keeps up such a high standard. I look forward to every post! 🤗
is this in the public domain. Did the company go bankrupt?
Beat horror film ever I still find it scary, beryl Reed and Flora Robson are excellent
Flick Vault thanks, kin HD too. Love these old Brit Horrors
Oboes and clarinets, the best instruments for a 1970 film!
Saw this year's ago when l lived at home, probably around 82/83. Flora was born in North East England like me.
Interesting spin of the authentic legend of the Beast of Dartmoor .
Oooh interesting
I have this film on DVD. I love it.
VERY INTERESTING that this movie seems to be recorded to show a lot of DEPTH ... almost like a 3d movie
I miss old cinematography, pretty sick of how many new films look, narrow colour range, hardly any contrast etc.
Brilliant actresses
a masterpiece ✨️ 👏 🙌 it's time era rolls royse quality performance don't make quality like this anymore sadly 😢.
I remember watching this as a kid, i could not go to bed at night. I got afraid so easily as a child.
Too....and still do
Five minutes in and there's the late, great T.P. Mckenna and the excellent Vernon Dobtcheff. That's a brilliant start to a horror in which to find the legends Dame Flora and dear Beryl.
More more plz 60s 70s films fantastic love watching them in bed and makes me feel good and takes away the worries xxxxx
The little girl's reaction to finding the body was better acting than the soldier's death in the cold open
What is not to like? An old rambling house In the middle of the beautiful English countryside with 2 batty old sisters Reid and Robson and a mad brother in the cellar!!!so much better than the stuff across the pond!!!
Flora Robson, underated British actor, gives a powerhouse performance, in this creepy thriller

"Human animal, or animal animal?"
The dialogue is as deep as The Mariana Trench.
"Another cup of tea dear?"

Very good suspense thriller 👍🏻👍🏻
Scared the shit out of me back in the 70's.
So glad Ellie got the celery after all..
John Hamill was quite a hunk in his day.

This film is pretty dreadful but it was one of the first horrors I ever saw and it really scared me so it will always hold a place in my heart. I think the premise itself is very good. Thanks for the very good quality upload.
the two leading ladies more than made up for any of its shortfalls, & it's still way better than many of the modern movies
Plz put more films on I have this but more 70s stuff old time un forgettable films you’re so good
Comments should be kind I think it's a creepy scary good film too great film stars😅
I kept waiting on that nurse becoming hysterical and getting slapped by the soldier...oh well on to the next one
I’m Glad That Clichè wasn’t added to the movie
It’s an English film not hysterical American drivel
Good movie..but why does that one sister always putting that military uniform on secretly??
Perhaps it was the only way to control Steven if he thought his dad was there, I was puzzled by it as well because Steven seems to turn violent every time he sees someone in uniform lol
I think it’s to pretend it’s his dad, so that he behaves
PS. Why is it I never have a nurse practitioner like that......mine is about 15 st and she is always sarcastic with no medical knowledge

I've seen this flick twice over the past three decades, a depressing and uneventful movie
