To clear up some confusion: “Timur declared his son”, the his is supposed to refer to Bayezid, so it’s Bayezid’s sons. My mistake for being unclear.

@@ottomankebabmapper4623 Correct, Mehmed II aka The Conquerer. It was a 13 year long Civil War that had to have devestated the realm. And it says a lot that the succeeding sultan, two Sultans down the line, implemented such a rule. I don't think he personally witnessed the war himself, but must've still witnessed the effects of it.
Edit: TBH you have to give the Ottomons massive credit. A 13 year long Civil War would have ended most other empires, but the Ottomons regained themselves and even went on to take the great city of Constantinople. I think the American Civil War was only 6 years in comparison.

Yeah after they lost Adrianople the Byzantines effectively became an Ottoman vassal and was heavily embedded with Ottoman Politics. Even during the fall of Constantinople, there was a rival claimant to the Ottoman throne fighting alongside the Byzantines, hoping that the battle would be a victory for the Byzantines and then subsequently take the throne of Sultan.

Keep in mind the empire was a handful of cities by this point that paid tribute to the Sultans in order to continue their existence, making them essentially vassals. The times emperors attempted to influence or gain off of Ottoman internal strife would result in retribution and threats of invasion by sultans afterwards. Any gains they could have made would have likely been stripped of them through threat of invasion. Not that paying lip service to the Ottomans did them many favors in the end. It's actually interesting to read about late Roman politics and diplomacy surrounding their complicated relationship with the Ottomans and Catholic nations who they often made overtures to.

No, this is not true. The Byzantine Empire would emerge from this war by gaining large lands. Byzantium would cease to be a vassal of the Ottoman Empire and stop paying annual compensation, and in return, the Süleyman Çelebi Sultanate would accept the supreme sovereignty of Byzantium. To show his good will, Süleyman Çelebi would give back to Byzantium the lands of Thessaloniki and its surroundings on the Aegean coast from the entrance of the Bosphorus, the Athos (Athos) peninsula, some Aegean islands and the Black Sea coast. As far as Nishapur (or even Varna). The Ottomans would return all Byzantine and other signatory country captives in their possession. Ottoman ships could not enter Çanakkale and the Bosphorus without Byzantine permission. In return, all countries that signed the agreement would accept Süleyman Çelebi as the ruler of the Ottoman Empire, whose capital was Edirne. If you ask why the Byzantine Empire could not take its lands from the Ottomans, the answer is very simple. The life of a finished state was extended by another 50 years thanks to Timur. Byzantium had no power.
