"It's an MMO law that we need to kill some boars" is reminding me of the joke in LOTRO where you're given a timed quest to kill some boars in the *only* region of the game where there are *no* boars. When the timer runs out-and there's nothing to stop you doing other, more useful things in the meantime-you return to the quest-giver who is incredulous that you couldn't find any and moans about wanting some delicious boar-steak. Later in the game someone else asks you to kill some boars in preparation for a banquet and then asks why you are laughing…

There are a couple generic early game enemies, both on MMOs and singleplayer RPGs.
Typically wolves, slimes, rats, boars, etc. Stuff that is relatively normal and harmless.
And in some cases they even deconstruct the whole thing. Like the first fighters guild quest in Oblivion. Some lady has problems with the rats in her basement. They are her pets and are getting killed by mountain lions. So you have to head out and get rid of the mountain lions, not the rats.
And a good twist would be to have that kind of "wolves are dangerous, go kill 20 wolves" and when you've looked everywhere and return to tell the questgiver there aren't any wolves anywhere on the map, the NPC will thank you for killing ALL the wolves.

    • @May-Hope
      @May-Hope 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

it's actually quite nice. Been playing the game for a few hours and you can tame almost everything. You even get achivements for taming specific monsters in a certain area, like titles. But you can't tame everything just like that, since some monsters have conditions for it. Like have this item (that you'd only get through a quest from this npc) or have gathered this specific thing that the monster likes or have killed this type before to gain dominance or have inflicted this amount of dmg beforehand. Also you can attack from and with your mount, which comes in handy during later stages where airial battle is introduced

    • @caffoycat
      @caffoycat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@May-Hope Agreed, I haven't played it for quite a while now, but I used to spend a lot of time on the game. When asked what sets the game apart, from others, the mounts are definitely one of the things that I'd offer as an answer. Personally, I wish we could do maybe a bit more with the mounts, as you can't do a lot when first starting off, and even then it takes a while to learn the necessary skills to attack with your mount. You'll end up getting mostly flying mounts anyway, since they can reach places quicker and are much more helpful. I've wished for such a game for ages, so I absolutely loved it, but I will say, it can get boring after a while. Despite the mounts, it's a generic MMO which requires you to spend way too much time on certain stuff. Overall, I did like it quite a lot, but I'm also not exactly surprised when people get bored of it.

I often forget which MMORPG is which out of numerous titles with the format of of -- Echo of Soul, Crusaders of Light, Champions of Titan, Riders of Icarus, Return of Warrior, Tree of Savior, Runes of Magic, etc. If it wasn't for Meg loving dragons and me keeping a list of dragon-centric MMORPGs for that purpose -- I'd likely not remember anything about this one either.
Mediocre MMORPGs are the worst, given there's usually nothing so terrible about the games to be unintentionally amusing nor anything that's legitimately fun. I've enjoyed my time with Rebirth Online and Bloodlines of Prima more than the mediocre titles of this series, given the horrific games are full of baffling design choices, broken systems, and unintentionally comical writing.

i used to play this game a year or 2 so ago, my main reason was just the taming system, though that got repetitive quickly, as half the mounts were missing atleast some animations, the game was boring as hell since all the quests were "kill this many of this" or "interract with this sparkly thing" and they never even tried any other quest type, they kept reusing models for mounts and just recoloring them eventhough this game is supposed to have many "unique" mounts, and the sheer lazyness of the design gets clearer and clearer the longer you go on for, and ontop of lazy design its also full of bugs, and most of the bugs they "patch" by removing the feature that caused it, like being able to ride one mount with several people (this was only for 3 or so mounts), but they removed it because player positions got bugged.
i really dont recommend this game to anyone at all.

the mount system was like discovering Strawberry Jam for the first time. Really cool but even still your gonna want variety before long.
most MMO's even bad ones have quite a few different kinds of quests and mechanics. to be fair to this game it is entirely possible there were some he could not figure out on account of not being able to launch the version in a language he could understand.
but from what we saw this was a basic if good looking MMO. not bad but not good either. certainly doesn't deserve the title of worst (which is what he thought about a couple of other games in this series.)
just off the top of my head for things this game is missing to be even a basic MMO where are the Raids?, Dungeons?, Group content in general? PVP arena? overworld events? Optional Bosses? Traversal Challenges? Faction Events?
basically all of the Massively Multiplayer Elements of the Massively Multiplayer Online Genre are missing from this game.

the game doesn't even work when you download it and try to launch it. I expect a game I download to launch.
Killing mobs leveling up and interacting with stuff as you put it is but a tiny part of the RPG part of an MMORPG.
it is by no means all that an MMO is as you asserted. in some MMO's it isn't even included. MMO simply means Massively Multiplayer Online. a game that involes mass Interaction but no RPG elements would be an MMO though those are rare these days as WOW popularized the idea that MMO's should be RPG's
No one is saying this is litterally the worst MMO of all time. In fact he was quite complimentary compared to most of the MMO's in this series. what this game does well it does really well. I would even go so far as to say it is a good game (when it deigns to launch) with a unique mount system but that doesn't make it a good MMO nor even an MMO at most it is a passable Online RPG. and even then it is a pretty basic one.

For instance, on the battlefield as the wizard it asks me to use my fire spells to detonate the explosives some enemies carry (gotta stack 3 burning debuffs on them) but as the berserker it asks me to destroy the barricades.
I dunno if this goes on through the whole game, but I thought that's an awesome design.

Ironically, this game somehow had some of the fanciest gear systems of any MMO I've played before.
You could tame animals/monsters/bosses of all kinds, and each one would be in a category of stat from 'All Stats', ' Attack Damage', 'Health', 'Mana', 'Defence', usually in theme with their kind, like dragons would be 'AD', bosses would be mostly 'All Stats' (from how rare they are), bears and tanky animals would be 'Defence', mythical creatures with magical references would usually be 'Mana', and so on...
You could then tame them, use them as mount, and from riding them or doing mounted combat with them, they would level up over time, and then at specific levels like 10 - 20 - 40... you could use an item called a 'Seal', that would turn each mount into a socket based on their level and nature, and some of the Epic to Legendary gear had 1-3 sockets available per gear slot, each socket could also be sold in the Auction House, and when the game first came out the AH was very active around this.
On top of that you could salvage your useless gear for these Stones that worked as gear upgrades, you could get stones between lvl 5 up to like lvl 120+ depending on what gear you salvaged, and what this meant was for you to upgrade from +1 to +3 or +4 you could use the lower level stones that matched the item level of your gear, but as they got to like +5 and over up to +8 (I think) the % of upgrade would be highly dependent on the lvl 120+ (rarer) stones. This was fairly good for AH movement too, each useless off-piece you got from raiding with wrong stats would be insanely meaningful if anything to be salvaged for these stones.
I played this for like 250hours way back, when it came out the lvl cap was 25, then 30, then 35 and so on, I quit when it was lvl 35 cap, and up until then I have to say, it was a very fun game, from a "pokemon" like mount hunting standpoint, some of the boss like mount captures had you do questlines and travel to specific parts of the map where a specific resource spawns only there, and you had to collect those and craft items that would be consumed after you lowered the boss health and tried to capture it.
Funnily enough the only 2 major complaints I had about this game was how it always ran like shit, trash optimization, and 2nd one being the universal mounted up skill set, which was so strong it didn't really matter what class you chose you'd always favor mounted combat over regular class combat (aside from non-mountable locations which were rare), , because of the heavy AoE ans solo target dps it offered in general was so much stronger than anything else from your class.
Some minor complaints would be, it's a Nexon game, and granted I played it without spending a dime and could compete with everyone that used the cash store, it's usually at the expense of hundreds of hours of work vs. a few hours of spending IRL money, both that and having to deal with some limited bag/bank space, which it's manageable although sometimes annoying.
    ------
Tl;dr: Game that had some good though and process behind it's gimmick gear mechanics, but as usual went to waste due to Nexon being behind it, as well as bad optimization (sadly).

@@therealharshlycritical Honestly, from the video it seems like the only problems with this game are that it didn't work in the English version and it hewed very close to convention in the gameplay. It's legitimate to ask whether being conventional is really all that bad. After all, many games, films, books, etc. manage to be fantastic and also very conventional. By the same token you can create shit if you do things just for the sake of defying convention without attention to storytelling. All quests in MMORPGs are talk/go/fetch/kill quests, but what makes them good or bad is the writing- which we can't access because it's in Russian and JSH doesn't have a Cyrillic font.

So a quick comment about the taming and mount system. You mentioned wishing it could do more. However (not to your own fault) you missed quite a bit. A few times you pulled up a menu that shows all tameable mobs in your area. Also different mounts have different ability’s when turned into pets. The unicorn is a attacker, however that kangaroo you found is actually a healer type pet. You can even tame that spider, and the large red maned wolf you killed around the vid’s halfway point. They all have special skills and some are rarer/harder then others. With the spider (or that wolf) being the highest “tier” in the starting area. On top of that some mounts have rare/alternate spawns that have different looks or better stats that you can get.
Now I didn’t get to this part but at a certain point you can even seal your “mounts” souls into gems before imbeuing your weapons and armor with them. (Remember when your character used the gem on the sword and failed?) well it’s a much higher level of that you did… and of course as you saw it can fail causing you to lose said gem, AND a cash shop selling gem boosters and the like… ya know… granted! They are a little generous with the premium currency. During a few of the achievements you got if you noticed the small blue stone in the right side of the banner? That’s the premiums currency. Besides that well… yeah it’s pretty accurate even for being in an unknown language. (???)

It's like the only game that let's you tame and mount almost EVERYTHING.
One of the early game bosses(Vulcan) is tamable, you get him at level 30 or something around that, pretty sure most of the bosses are tamable.
The only thing that makes Icarus bad is how much the new owners screwed it up... Buggy as hell and way more p2w than it was.

Give it a try, atleast in DP you Don't need Marks or RNG to tame dragons, If you're high enough Level you can get almost any Dragon.

I can't believe you didn't mention this, but...
Nexon was the original publisher of RoI. I played it pretty much since it launched, and you know, it was repetitive, but it was also pretty damn fun too. I loved it. I sunk hundreds of hours, and even real money into it. Not much, but enough to satisfy myself. I had an assortment of rare mounts and pets... and I was loving the events... but I took a break for a while when bigger games came out. I returned to it one day to find that I couldn't launch the game from their launcher. The game was showing that I owned it, but I couldn't play it. When I researched the problem I found that they sold RoI to some Asian company and *deleted my entire account.* Hours of time gone. Money gone. Everything gone. Apparently there was some kind of "migration" to the new servers, but I was never notified of it. Every time I think of this game now, I think of how much I miss it, and how I don't have the heart to start over.

I played RoI back when it first came out. I even spent £75 on their Legendary Riders Pack before it entered Open Beta. Unfortunately I had to drop the game for several years after 2017 due to real life circumstances.
Seeing this video actually made me want to go back and pick it up, now that a lot of stuff has finally settled down. Only to discover Nexon didn't keep up the contract, that the publisher changed hands, and that Nexon DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER TO EMAIL ME ABOUT MIGRATING MY ACCOUNT. Apparently my entire RoI (and the admittedly hundreds of dollars I spent on it) are literally fucking deleted, lost forever, because neither Nexon nor new publisher Valofe ever sent me an email. Nothing. Not a single email saying "By the way if you don't migrate accounts, your Icarus data is being deleted and fuck you, thanks for the money."
I'm beyond angry. I genuinely enjoyed Icarus too, is the worst part, it wasn't the worst obviously Korean game I'd ever played (and I liked it more than TERA, to be honest.)
I think I need to give up on games that feature mount and mount based combat. First it was Dragon's Prophet and now it's RIders of Icarus. How do these people keep fucking up these games and stealing my money like this.

This is why only few MMOs are still alive because they have their own identity or they are the ones who set the standard for that certain mechanic. For example, wow has its dungeon and raids or Black desert has its combat system. I think if they did more of perfecting a certain mechanic rather than cramping all it in just to have quantity, MMOs will be a much more alive genre in gaming market. It's more of finding a demographic than trying to please everyone because it usually ends to pleasing no one.
