Having being recently diagnosed with breast cancer, I have dealt with private and public healthcare. Both have offered amazing service. Currently being treated at the public Portimao hospital at the oncology department, I cannot praise the service I've received thus far. Makes me love Portugal more. ❤❤❤
I had a throat operation at Loulé private hospital, brilliant care and everyone spoke English. A few months later i had a heart emergency and was rushed to Faro public hospital, they were amazing and all spoke English I had a heart procedure in Lisbon again amazing care and all spoke English. It seems to me whichever hospital/clinic you go to people really care about you, wonderful service.
This was one the BEST information I’ve seen so far regarding Portugal healthcare systems along provided map of Hospitals in the algarve region. Great job Nick as always, Thanks
Very informative video. Thanks Nick for what you bring to new residents in Algarve. I enjoyed your interview with Jorge Santos and as a user of the Hospital de Loulé I’m now better informed of the services they can provide.
I see a very long line every morning at the public health center near me, even when it's raining. More than 10% of Portuguese don't have a primary family doctor because there is a shortage, despite the extremely high taxes people pay. Insurance premiums in the private health care system are quite expensive especially as you age and it's quite difficult to navigate through it.
This is a great video. I wish you guys would dive a little deeper into healthcare. If you are living in the Algarve and have a heart attack, are hospitals there equipper to do cath lab intervention? Do they have Shockwave IVL treatment to break up calcium deposits in arteries before implanting stents? What about long term care in Portugal or in the Algarve. If someone must be placed in long term care do to illness or injury, how much does it cost per month. In the U.S., long term care is now over $10,000.00 per month if there is any medical staff involved at the facility. In Mexico, that same care is around $2,000.00 per month. How much is home care per month is some is recovering at home and needs a twice weekly healthcare visit? Finally, is there any kind of national registry in Portugal that lists medications and how much they cost for patients? Thank you for creating such informative videos. Very much appreciated.
Thank you very much Nick for such an informative and important peace of mind inducing video for ex pats who live in Portugal and who are thinking about retiring to Portugal . I was wondering if you could maybe make a supplementary video on the Home care services in Portugal . I have read that there is a UK owner running a home care service called : Algarve care services . so people who have been hospitalised and need after care at home or live in care , or just want to remain independent at home and need care if there is no family to help with caring .The costs and range of services available would be most gratefully appreciated . I read the the owner Kelly has got a plan to build a world class dementia care facility in the Algarve in memory of her parents who both suffered and passed away with dementia . Thanks again
Lusíadas healthcare has a number of doctors who struggle with English, and MANY of their younger support staff do as well, and this is in Lisbon and Porto. While my GP in the SNS does just fine with English. On the Allianz gold plan at age 68 I pay way too much for insurance and Lusíadas still refused to bill the insurance for one of my GI exams and I had to pay 683EU out of pocket and submit my own claim to insurance. It's pending. I don't recommend top tier private insurance. I feel like a fool doing it.
I understand. I am paying so much for the insurance also and the agent didn't speak any foreign languages. Very difficult to understand how to go about it. Arriving at the private hospitals, it's like a factory. Many people are waiting. You have to get a ticket and then another one and wait. It's extremely impersonal and the doctor gets rid of you in a few minutes. So keep in mind, everything is very slow in Portugal except when you would like it to be slow.... Sad. But I am afraid to deal with it.
In case you missed it, here's the hospital map: Private Hospitals in the Algarve

@@AlgarveAddicts Thanks very much . wishing you a pleasant week ahead Nick
Great interview Nick! I have already shared with others.
Thanks Dagmar!
I'm sharing it as well. Thank you Nick.
Thanks Jason.
Thank you for the excellent video! Can private insurance companies in Portugal just drop you based on age?
Why do insurance companies always exclude the stomach ? That's scary. What happens if something happens to your stomach ?
Question: is there the age limit for obtaining private health insurance? Can I get and STAY in private insurance after, lets say, age of 80?
Hi, you'd have to chat with our broker. Please drop us a line on www.algarveaddicts.com/contact
How much does prescription glasses cost on average?
