    Folks, thank you for indulging us and letting us nerd out a little about a very unique film the last couple of weeks. We hope you've enjoyed the discussion and were able to take away something from it. If you have any other thoughts or observations to add, please feel free to let us know. We'd love to hear it.
    Next week we are resuming our regularly scheduled programming with the new season of Norsemen 🤓

    One-Eyes "trip" differs from christians' trip... they dream of the glory due them for settling this new land in the name of Christ, each acting-out a fantasy christian ritual ceremony in their minds. OTH, One-Eye (sensing his fate) begins building a cairn... a timeless, tangible marker... "I WAS HERE".

    As Germanic Norse practising Pagans, my wife and I agree with your extremely well presented analyse of the film. I think it's safe to say One Eye is Odin. He even had the Odin rune on himself, as did the man who went missing and came back painted in red.

    the boy & One-Eye are indeed two sides of one "character"... they represent the fate of pagan society, IMO. raw fatalist/paganism could not survive the coming age, but perhaps the spirit/blood (uncorrupted man - "the boy" ) can survive... quietly? at the edges?

    Burial scaffolding was a traditional Sioux death ritual (not sure about other tribes), though it's hard to sail from Scotland to The Great Plains. My guess is that Refn read about the tradition and just thought it would look cool in a movie.

    So happy I found this - finished watching the film earlier today, loved it, but was trying to put my finger on a lot of things. I appreciate this info and take :)

    Thanks for the great analysis. This movie makes a lot more sense once you know your mythology :)
    I like how it works as both a Norse and Christian allegory, and on the literal level too.
    On the Christian level, the boat sequence shows them abandoning God in hard times and turning to idolatry and murder (trying to kill the boy because he's "cursed"). For this, they go to "hell", and this is a pretty good depiction of a Biblical hell - not fire and brimstone, just a Godless place where men act in Godless ways. Except for the old man, who gets a halo when he dies.
    In some ways, you could say that One Eye is a bit of a Christ figure too. He sacrifices himself that others may live, and the old man who follows him gets a halo.
    Something in here for everyone :)

      Those are some great points as well. There are certainly different interpretations to this film.

    Also, children are no threat to christianity. Apart from this, any child can be influenced by others, which shows that any child can be programmed with any belief. That's why there are schools, that give some particular knowledge and that's why teachers are used for this, not parents teach their children, but others. The same thing about christianization: if a child is taught with christian beliefs, from this child will grow a christian adult. Also, there is an expression «tabula rasa», which is also another representation of the fact, that children are the most susceptable to any information, like there is no defense, i.e. any information can be absorbed. Adults have values already, because they have had experiences with information. Hence, children are no threat to christianity, but adult heathens are a threat to it. Also, mind control is based on growing children with some particular mindsets. You know, at the same time, any new tradition can be rooted, if there is no one, who remembers that what was there prior to a new tradition. That's why a new tradition was created by spilling blood with a sword.
    However, eventually, christianity is a distorted worldview, which is unnatural. I won't described why, because you're probably already know why it is this way.

    I haven’t watched this movie but I need to!
    I have one suggestion, it’s fine if you don’t react to it but it’s a proof of concept trailer for a series which is trying to get the funding. The proof of concept trailer was released today, and it’s called “The Serpent Sword”. It follows Matthew Harffy’s books called The Bernicia Chronicles which is set in the 7th Century and follows the wars between Bernicia and the Waelisc.
    Again, it’s only a proof of concept trailer so there was no budget that went into it, but I found it very well done. I’d like to hear your opinions on the trailer itself as well as the armour, helmets, shields and just the accuracy of it because it looks really good.
    It’s fine if you can’t react to it though!!

    If One Eye is Odin then The Boy is Thor.

    • @VikingsReact
      @VikingsReact  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting theory, care to elaborate?

    • @bmontgomery5485
      @bmontgomery5485 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the Boy is the only one that can understand him, and the Boy is the ONLY person that doesn’t die who has met One Eye. I took this to mean he shares a bond with one eye that the others characters can’t share because they’re not Gods like these two. Also you could say that the boy is the remanent of the Norse Heathen culture that survives as Thor’s future is to replace his father someday.

    First of all, many thanks on your detailed review. I learned a lot of new trivia and of course, understood the plot much better. But, also, I have a questions and would really appreciate if you could give me your opinion. I don't know if my file was bad, but whole movie did you hear like crackling (Im Serbian, so my Engish vocabulary is not good, can't figure better word) through the whole film? What could it represent? NWR is one of my favorite directors of all time, even though not usually I don't understand most of the story, but because of you, I even more like this film! Thanks!

      Wow, thank you so much!! You're very kind 😁
      I do not remember any crackling throughout the video, it might just simply be your video file 😕
