  • This vehicle was scheduled for a check engine light diagnosis. On the way to the shop, her engine stalled out and would not restart. She had her vehicle towed in, and the no start is the failure that I diagnose.

    • @VoltageDropDiagnostics
      @VoltageDropDiagnostics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you may be right. The ECM grounds to the engine, and obviously the engine grounds to the battery. So I am on the same page with you, thinking that the ECM had no communication because of the bad ground.

    You put your key in, you HAVE something but you dont have crank. I wish the title was a bit more explicit, no start, no crank after transmission replacement, radiator fan on with key on and as I did notice, some of this was on your thumbnail. Thanks so much for the Voltage Drop test after all, that is why you are here but why did the radiator fan run key on engine off in this case? What is the Toyota strategy behind that?

    • @VoltageDropDiagnostics
      @VoltageDropDiagnostics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the radiator was coming out because the ECM grounds to the engine. And without a good engine ground the ECM was probably losing communication causing the fans to come on as a fail safe.

    Hey can you name all the scenarios in which the rad fans default? I thought it was a bad temp sensor or related... I usually put my test light on the signal wire of the starter. If it's lit I need a starter. I didn't quite get your way of testing it. Maybe I need to watch it again

    • @VoltageDropDiagnostics
      @VoltageDropDiagnostics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I "THINK" that the fans were kicking on because of a communication issue with the ecm. The ecm grounds to the engine, and obviously the engine wasn't ground back to the battery so I think the fans were kicking on because of a loss of communication with the ecm.

    who to ask other than a seasoned Toyota tech....2000 Toyota Avalon 3.0l pcm replacement due to a p0773...what are my options, i'v had this vehicle on j2534 techstream in an attempt to reprogram a used pcm and i don't remember seeing immob functions or vin writing ...i have a few scanners with immob functions, 906bt, torque, im508...shop tried getting a vin'ed pcm and immob set to automatic registration mode but the im508 shows 3 keys.....what to do

    • @VoltageDropDiagnostics
      @VoltageDropDiagnostics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      billmck12345 the only way to use a used pcm on those is if you either eeprom the immobilizer function completely out of the pcm, or if you put it back into automatic registration mode.
      If it’s showing that 3 keys are already programmed, it doesn’t sound like the eeprom took.
      Did you do the eeprom work? Or did you have someone else do it?

    barely over 100k and has a new trans? I heard of another failing at around 80k miles.. Such junk (And I have one, at 54k miles) Mine acts like it wants to stall when at idle in drive.. RPM's hit 500 and shakes bad, toyota says its completely normal.

    • @VoltageDropDiagnostics
      @VoltageDropDiagnostics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dpa SFT I’ll be honest with you. I haven’t seen many corollas transmissions failing.
      And as far as your car idling low, has your battery went dead, or have you had the battery replaced recently?

    • @Dapsters
      @Dapsters 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@VoltageDropDiagnostics yeah, when they sold us the car they did a warranty repair on it because the battery had a bad cell.. this was before we got it, turns out the battery was 72 months old and was weak, never failed to start the car but we replaced it to be safe as the testers said it was only doing 260 cca.. and were driving up to Minnesota in 2 weeks.
      Replaced the battery but it's still doing it, the rough idle goes away if I disengage the trans by putting it in neutral or park
      Oh and the dealership refused to warranty the battery because I didnt buy it.. but it was done in the used vehicle certification process or whatever

    • @VoltageDropDiagnostics
      @VoltageDropDiagnostics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dpa SFT how recently did all of this happen? As far as the battery replacement.

    • @Dapsters
      @Dapsters 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VoltageDropDiagnostics the battery was replaced on Nov 15th idle issue has been an issue since we got the car about 1.5 years ago but they blamed a throttle body being dirty, cleaned it but no change. It's been ignorable for a while but got noticeably worse this last month or two where its nearly every stop

    • @VoltageDropDiagnostics
      @VoltageDropDiagnostics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dpa SFT yeah, 9 times out of 10 it is because of a dirty throttle body.
      It’s easy enough to do yourself if you don’t trust that they did it.
      Otherwise, I advise you taking it to another technician, one who specializes in diagnosing vehicles.

    Hi guys, I had a short yesterday while wiring up some fog lights and now the car cranks strong but isnt starting. When I turn the car on/acc mode I do not hear any fuel pump noise so I am thinking its a relay.
    Initially, ODB fuse and radio fuse were burnt but replaced but still no start.
    I just can't seem to find where the proper relays are for the fuel tank and/or EFI relay to try and replace or test it.
    I checked the owners manual but no mention of these relays and online I seem to find different answers on where these relays are located : I did test every fuse and relay I could find/access and ALL OF THEM tested fine. I am lost at this point and wondering if it’s Ecu?

    You are awesome man. , can you explain me the voltage drop test . The positive led ( goes to the engine ) at any place ( I suppose any ground location right ). And the ground led to the ground terminal at the battery ?? Thanks in advance.

    • @VoltageDropDiagnostics
      @VoltageDropDiagnostics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rodrigo Moran you got it. This is how I check a large majority of my ground wires.
      So if I am checking a headlight circuit, and I have the headlights turned on. I check for 12v on the power wire.
      Then I move the positive lead to my ground wire, and check for voltage on my ground wire.
      If i have about 250-500mv (depending on how large the load is on the circuit) i know that I have a ground problem.
      Doing a continuity test for ground wires isn’t good. A single strand of wire in a harness will show good continuity, but won’t be able to carry the amperage needed for the circuit.
      I hope that helped!

    What's the story with the fans you mentioned several times?

    • @VoltageDropDiagnostics
      @VoltageDropDiagnostics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, right off the bad, it’s unusual that a fan kicks on when you have a bad starter. So i knew that it most likely wasn’t a starter issue.
      But I’m relatively confident that the fans are kicking on because the ecm is losing communication.
      The ecm is losing communication because it grounds to the engine that has a bad ground.
