  • A lecture given by Kirsten Traynor at the 2021 National Honey Show entitled “Media Mayhem: How the news media is pitting honey bees against native bees”. The National Honey Show gratefully acknowledge the Worshipful Company of Wax Chandlers for their support and Bucks County BKA for their sponsorship.
In the last few years, it has become popular to criticize honey bees as competitors that transmit diseases to native bees. Some beekeepers have been banned from nature preserves where they have kept bees for years. Let's unravel some of the research and examine the real issues at hand.
We apologise for the poor audio quality.
Dr. Kirsten S. Traynor investigates honey bee health and how pesticides impact social behaviour. She is the Director of the Institute of Bee Science in Celle, Germany. In 2020, she launched a new quarterly magazine 2 Million Blossoms: protect our pollinators. Originally an English major, Kirsten won her first hive in a raffle right after college graduation. These fascinating insects led to a globe-trotting adventure, a PhD in biology, and a new appreciation for the interconnectedness of our planet. But she never lost her desire to write and now combines her skills in science communication. She is the author of Two Million Blossoms: Discovering the Medicinal Benefits of Honey and Simple, Smart Beekeeping.

We absolutely enjoy and learn massively from every lecture by the National Honey Show, difficult to say which one is better than the other. Yet this video has a larger impact as it can and must be seen by non beekeepers to understand the ongoing discussion between native and honey bees. Thank you for such relevant lecture in this current time.

Media sure don't talk about bioengineering and pesticides they named it varroa problems

the biggest threat to wild honey bees are beekeeping from people that sound all very educated and in the science like this ladies but they are infact the problem, promoting pesticides and genetic engineering.

This a terrific talk on a pertinent topic for both beekeepers and everybody else interested in bee ecology and the environment! She shifts a bit into advocating organic farming while neglecting some of profound economic and social costs associated with such a shift, but overall super talk.

Great talk! Love the in depth analysis, it's so hard to try to describe to people in the heat of the moment, but I think this overview helps a lot to address the topic from a well rounded perspective.

First, this was a great presentation on the stated topic and seems to suggest that every man made biological and environmental problem needs extensive research and broader biological scope unless we , as we have with treatments for our commercial bee live stock, only take a single focused approach and cause more problems.
My concern with the presentation is the statement that honey bees are live stock only and should be treated that way. I personally know and see bees in feral woodland colonies. These are not managed as live stock and live a successful wild Darwinian life. Won’t these feral bees be the survivor stock that we turn to as we fail to resolve these man induced issues with the commercial live stock given the monetary pressures on the commercial owners? Isn’t large centralized pollination processes and single crop growers creating significant pressure against a solution? In what other industry do we see the suggestion of the presentation work? I still see more cattle and chicken factories than free ranging.
Is land availability and average cost the real issue? Do we need a new National forestry initiative that targets broader types of land rather than just picturesque mountains?

Very well said sir. With this mentality legislation will be brought in making wild bee coloneys dangeris and they will be exterminated by ignorant talks like this.

I know I am preaching to the quire here but here is my 5c worth.. So I have feral honeybees in trees and nestboxes, around apery's, and if you look at the wild bees you can see what the beekeeper is up to !! I call it the pebble in the pond affect. from if they are using imported queens to if they are having problems with veroa !! so yes beekeeping is actually bad for honey bees. yes look at the science, but its normally with tinted sunglasses. But she completely lost me as a book expert and not a real life expert when she could not respond and had no idea about crispy beeswax question 🤔
