I think he messed up his ratios too, the ore behind his smelters keeps increasing, when ideally it should remain exactly the same. It's particularly obvious when he put 5 extractors behind one smelter, then after upping the smelter's speed by 50%(which would leave it able to handle 4.5 extractors worth of ore) decides to up the extrators speed too(because if it's already behind it's best to make the problem worse).
I love how Matt never _ever_ thinks of using more than one of anything in parallel but instead goes with extremely expensive upgrades and clogged-up one-lane traffic.
I think the easiest solution for this might be to build as many extractors as you can and ship everything to the research center as soon as possible once you develop splitters you can then split raw resource lines off to build more complex items in devoted factory areas while your excess raw resources builds up passive income for developing new factory areas. Also having an easily accessible and splitable main supply line of your basic raw materials will make it way easier to develop more complex factories down the line.
while that would impove income that is really finicky because it depends on the rate of everything. (if you want to make it work 100% of the time.) once you upgrade something it throws off the rates.

You should try Mindustry. A good resource management, factory, tower defense game. (Actually, no other game filled the hole in my heart after that, and Builderment was one of them trying)

for the money, when you unlock the gold vault you can just build a lot of extactors really far away to make money but before that, just build some extactors in places you don't use and connect them to the research lab. money has never been a poblem for me in this game. Also when you don't have a money problem, buildings(workshop, furnace...) become cheap for you so instead of maximizing the imput of the buildings, you just focus not to waste materials(wood, coal, copper...) by not clogging up the systems. I just put buildings for every extractor because I know I will upgrade those.

The game direly needs a tool to build straight conveyer belts. Current conveyer belt construction requires a very stable hand and a precise mouse, which I don't think Matt has.

RCE worrying about efficiency but leaving the iron conveyor belt crooked is the most architectural thing to do
a crooked belt will only affect the initial transport time, but after that, it doesn't matter.

@jackcarver1629 what ends up happening is the belts running to the lab end up getting in the way of other belts transporting mid tier resources.

i would suggest playing mindusty which is really challenging (not for architects), that would be really funny

If you like these sort of factory games look into Factory Town. Automation galore!

I would be careful of discounting the Decoration side of the tech tree. Some devs are sneaky and put actually useful stuff amongst the decoration.
