Hi guys.. you have a lovely narrowboat, I had 2 centre lines, good idea.. also as a cc I had a multi fuel stove in the centre of the saloon with a back boiler ( gravity fed) with a radiator in bathroom and bedroom, nice and warm.. no need for problems with diesel or gas things going wrong.!! Extra costs as well.. keep safe.. enjoy Chugging...

You should get camper's solar shower bags. They are black and just hang them or lay them on the roof. If it's sunny you could heat them during day light and have your showers at night.

  • @jonturner3179
    @jonturner3179 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I've got a camping solar shower. Best description is a large strong butyl rubber/plastic bag that has a shower head coming off it and a pole/carrying handle at the top. One side is black to absorb the heat and the other is see through. You put it outside in the sun for a few hours and then once the water is warm, you can hang it up and use it. Really good for the spring/summer and you save on heating the water.

A camp shower is a great idea, especially those pressure ones, they're really good..
It's funny how some people love diesel stoves and others love solid fuel stoves and they always seem to buy a boat which doesn't have their preferred stove!
The thing i like about solid fuel is the way the stoves dry the air. There's less damp and mildew and they're lovely to look at - best TV. However, some people hate the dust, ash, storage and supply problems and effort needed to maintain them.
I bet you could fit one of those small chest freezers under one of your benches. You've got the space.
    Anyway, keep chugging!

    • @chuggingalong

Hi Grace, yes I guess it's a case of that we always want what we don't have. We don't have any plans to change to multi-fuel we just have to make sure that we stay nearer a place where we can get red diesel next time 🙂👍👍🏾 Thanks for your comment

Hi, wonderful video! As far as suggestions, I would recommend altering the engine room hatch on top of your vessel. Instead of a single sliding hatch (which I do like), you could make a good deal of usable space on top of the vessel by making a foldable hatch. Dividing the hatch into six equal panels that fold up on to the next panel. This would still give you the great access to the engine and bicycle storage and leave you with enough space for the deck chairs and possibly another solar panel. Please don’t bring an interior (liquid) fuel tank into the living spaces of your boat - safety, it could easily lead to a terrible accident.
    Again, great video!

I think you need to check on the regulations before you go ‘any further with your separate fuel tank’ and certainly not inside your living space 👍
Btw, I also like your presentation and nice and clear making them a pleasure to watch and listen to 😊
Some others could learn from you 🤔

Am I the only person to comment sofar? Love the finale. Extra battery -yes. 2 centre lines - yes. Trad stern and sofas yes for all that storage. Extra solar panel if possible - yes. Wind turbine is too expensive for the small return, OK for yachts - no. Petrol generator iffy as the flammable aspect of storing petrol and buying is a problem. There are diesel generators but more expensive but do give out more power. Paint additions - wonderful, will give Mary L wow factor and cheap and easy to do. Look forward to seeing your modifications. Hope we can all get chugging soon.

Hello Sam and Tim. Thanks as always for your video. I personally would not mix the shapes, that is, where Tim wants rhomboids, I would continue with squares. The letters to spell MaryL in each is inspired. And other folks have mentioned the large rectangle at the rear cries out for some art. Many years ago, it would have been coachpainting listing your company, phone number, etc. A nice mural would work. Something Asian influenced to remind you of your travels?
Take care and I hope you will be off on your travels soon.

Guys as always great video love the ideas of adding the splash of color along the side and adding the letters Mary L, one thing about the wind turbine or gas generator both good ideas but have heard from other boaters when your along a peaceful canal with no noise and a boater moors near you and starts a generator and all you hear is the noise, now have seen small wind power turbine that can be installed on a collapsible pole so when your moored it goes up and when your chugging along can bring it down, and having been and avid camper the camping shower is a great idea, nothing like a hot shower lol, and the only thing i would change inside your Beautiful boat is the stove to a multi fuel stove again guys can't wait to see whats next

Use a product named Old English on the wood work to refresh it and hide scratches
    Re-caulk around the shower basin

You asked for opinions: I think the painted roses would look lovely but suspect the castles might look a bit kitsch. Personally I'd go with painted squares as painted diamonds might jar with the large rectangle. I thought the best use of the thermal cooker was for casseroles, curries and the like - surely that's winter food - so get cooking. I'm actually quite interested in a thermal cooker myself so an unbiased review would be nice. I've heard that wind generators can be noisy and sometimes vibrate while having a petrol generator seems odd if you already have a generator on the engine - couldn't you just have a spare portable 25l fuel tank and keep the main fuel tank topped up with that?

    • @henrybiglowe6409

    • @garyb47

@@chuggingalong Check the output of your engine powered generator against the output of a portable generator. The efficiencies of running the engine for a shorter period versus running a lower output generator for half a day for the same result, and you won't be upsetting as many fellow boaters recharging your batteries.

Definitely consider a diesel rather than petrol generator. On the whole much more effective per liter. You may have just misspoke and that's what you meant (easily done). If you do that I'd suggest you mount it in the bow and sound insulate it if at all possible - they are so loud. Take care.

Great vlog as always. Your boat is lovely as it is 😍. Not sure I'd change to a multi fuel stove as they make a lot of mess in the boat no matter how careful you are emptying it. A separate diesel tank for your stove is a good idea. With regards to your sofas - it depends if you find them comfortable enough to sit on. If yes, keep them and if not swap for a bed settee that's much more comfortable. Think your paint scheme on boat is classy as it is, personally think red rhombus (rhombi?) wouldn't look great 😁. Looking forward to seeing how you cook with your thermal cooker and definitely interested in seeing what delicacies you both conjur up 😋 xxx

Red squares rather than diamonds would be more consistent with. The existing red panel.
Small petrol generator. Have you considered getting a largish battery to battery charger rather than generator, and heat water!. Sterling power suggest 70 to 80 % of the alternator size. But of course if you only have a small alternator to get a big b2b charger you would need to change the alternator as well. Sterling latest model will charge both ways with setable max values. Vitron buck chargers have similar options. Running main engine for an hour to put 60 to 100 amp hour in batteries seems better to me than having to fuss with having to constantly get gallons of petrol for noisey petrol generator. An hour is plenty time to properly warme up and burn up any moisture in the system.
Ps if you look at sterling look at sterling's own site for offers.
Solar. Especially in winter make sure panels are tilted to max. At my home, east of Greenwich, with panels horizontal only produce a quarter of the panels value of the panels in wh on average per day IN Dec and Jan, notmuch better in feb. If raised to 67deg* and pointing south ish will produce the panel value in Wh per day on average in dec and jan. You could probably only get to 30 deg but this will be a lot more than flat panels.
    * 67° is my ideal angle for jan and dec but the panel wattage in Wh holds all the way up to vertical.
Some vanners put a blanket on there panels and sit / lounge on them when they want to sit on the roof, doubt table and chairs would be good.
Extra solar, perhaps portable panels put out or hung on the side when needed, good inclination for winter on the side.
    Best wishes

Rhombuses yes rhombi not so much although English as you know is defined by usage... so rhombi is now acceptable. My rule of thumb is that when a word is tricky to spell, its origin may be Greek rather than Latin. Latin plurals are the ones traditionally ending in "i" or even "ii". Same rules apply to "syllabuses" although "syllabi" sound pretentious enough to be favoured by some educational tossers.
