      Congratulations! On a side note I besides the starch solution I also bought Chef AJ books (Unprocessed and The secrets to ultimate weight loss) which not only comes with delicious recipes but also touches on the delicate subject of food addiction and beats any excuse anybody has not to do it. I’m so happy I found these 3 books because I know I never need to read another diet book ever again.

    Jessica, I’m very surprised your doctor didn’t mention to you that medication can also cause high liver enzymes. Mine were so high at one point they wanted to do a liver biopsy. I lost my insurance coverage and stopped all medication (which included anti-depressants and Premarin (as I was post menopausal). After I stopped all medications, my enzymes went back to normal

      I found my period is still very heavy. Even after going plant based. My thing now is I need to be much lower fat and I recognize my periods getting lighter and no pain. Big difference from being stuck in bed in pain. Every women is different. Hormonal balance is important. It isn't always the thyroid. It is usually a balance of estrogen to progesterone. fyi. My thyroid is normal and I still have this problem.

    A fun side note about B12 - it doesn't come from meat, it comes from bacteria. As animal agriculture gets less natural, animals aren't exposed to those bacteria as readily, so the animals are given B12 supplements. So, considering that the B12 from meat is from supplements, why not cut out the animal and just take the supplements directly?

    • @EMunaBee
      @EMunaBee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's also due to cleanliness - of water, of washing produce. Vegans who research know to supplement. Nonvegans compromise the largest percentage of those low in B12.

    • @jmilleronaire
      @jmilleronaire 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @abcde 12345 Possibly - But also, we can just, y'know, take a supplement.

    • @fernbrisot325
      @fernbrisot325 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @abcde 12345 I think that vegans who lived before our world of super-cleanliness almost certainly ate their fair share of insects in their greens and stored grains/meal.

    • @d.rabbitwhite
      @d.rabbitwhite 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @abcde 12345 Our bodies make it but it is so low in the digestive system that we lose it in our feces. This was proven through studies taking one's feces, desiccating it putting it in capsule form and then measuring the levels, not through a blood test but measuring of Methylmalonic acid levels in a urine test. Normal blood serum levels of b12, may not show adequate b12 functional status; Levels in blood not showing levels in cells. Many showing normal blood levels are functionally too dang low. There is b-12 in Lemnoideae (duckweed), and since there are tens of thousands of edible plants, of which humans eat few, comparatively, there may likely be other sources of vit b12 out there.

    Oh my word Jessica! I am the same way with the sun. I get red and blotchy and dizzy with a headache. BTW, when I was in my 20's, I've mentioned this before in another comment on a more recent video of yours, that I used to bleed the opposite of what I should. So, everyday of the week, I would bleed heavily (TMI: with chunks), and only about a week out of each month I would kinda stop bleeding. Drs tried putting me on birth control and it worked, but like you, it made me feel strange, but I stayed on them for a bit longer because it was nice not having to deal with blood every day. I was constantly anemic. I feel like, if the doctors would have said, hey Anna, if you change your diet, and not eat so much processed foods, you could improve your situation, but no one told me ANYTHING about that. It wasn't until I moved to California, got a computer, and went online and researched it, that I learned that I wasn't eating healthy at all. I was the typical American on the SAD diet. And it was really sad. If I ate a cheeseburger, It had to have cheese and bacon and don't even think about watering it down with a piece of lettuce and tomato, but the pickles were ok. And oh BTW, give me the supersize coke and the fries. Salad? I'm not a rabbit! What are you thinking? And then, I went cold turkey. I went Raw vegan and forced my self to do it. It was the BEST thing I ever did. Now, I don't eat nearly as many processed foods, and I don't drink soda/pop, nor eat beef, nor pork. I have added back in fish and chicken after getting married. But, I am considering going vegan again. But, it's difficult when my husband doesn't want to go completely vegan. He won't even eat peas, or black beans, or tofu (unless I hide it, and I don't like to not tell him what I'm feeding him, because what if he's allergic to it and doesn't know it?) I mean, if I say, hey I'm going to prepare tofu and he agrees to eat it and THEN he finds out he can't tolerate it, then I'm not at fault. Yeah... I always tell people what is in the foods I make. But, one time, he bought some "extra protein chocolate cashew milk", and he didn't know it had pea protein in it. He drank it anyway. I told him later, "Hey did you know this has peas in it?" and he says, oh! I guess it's the texture and flavor of actual peas that he doesn't like, but he couldn't taste them in the chocolate cashew milk.

    Fatty Liver is not just caused by alcohol and overweight. My mom is underweight and she has it. Sugar, bread, and such can cause it. Genetics as well. I had my gallbladder removed in 2017 which increases chances for fatty liver. My removal was at the end of October. By March 2018 I had an enlarged liver which was the beginning of fatty liver before the liver actually began showing fat. I had just lost a lot of weight prior to my surgery and diet change. When I started adding more fat-filled foods to my diet and eating more sweets it started. I did not gain back weight until after the fatty liver had begun forming.

    Jessica, do you take ibuprofen and/or naproxen? Last year my dr wasn’t happy with my ALT and AST numbers. Like yours, they weren’t horrible, but they were out of range. I had been taking very large amounts of ibuprofen and naproxen for many years for back and knee pain. He forbade me from taking either of those anymore. Blood work 6 weeks after I stopped taking them showed a large improvement. Just a thought.

    Mrs.B. here, love your journey. All those standards are based on a SAD diet. I was told by a very smart doctor (last Time I saw one) " no, those tests arent the gold standard--- you're the gold standard."
    In other words, how I feel and function, and especially, what I put in my mouth, is the real indicator of my health.
    I hate even junk vegan food. Maybe especially junk vegan food because they bear more guilt as they know better. Well, so do I, so why do I give into it? To borrow some wisdom from AA- look at your past track record. Mine is to lose only to regain. This is my third major loss so my past track record tells me a regain is comming.
    How long its delayed is up to me, just for today I'll choose to eat healthy, just this 24 hour period. Anyone can follow a set behavior for 24 hours. If I want to eat crap 'I'll think about that tomorrow"
    For today I'll think about what's missing in my life and how to heal that void instead of stuffing it with food. We all know we heal from the inside out.

    Be sure your supplements are quality products, usually found at health food stores not discount, grocery and most pharmacies. Also, make sure it's the correct type of Vit D and Iron including what they need to be taken with to be absorbed by the body.

    Only number in cholesterol that matters is LDL and it should be below 70 (and total below 150) per Dr. Greger: nutritionfacts.org/video/optimal-cholesterol-level/

    Hello Jessica! I am new to WFPB lifestyle as well as your show. I felt lousy the last two days after 100% WFPB for the last 7days. I eased into it and finally made the leap but after feeling so bad it has made me re-think this journey. Please if anyone has any advice. All medical numbers a good i do not eat or drink dairy, cut out sugar. I check labels. A friend suggested I may have been going through a detox for the last 3 days.

      I listened to vegan gastroenterologist Dr. Angie Sadeghi in a podcast (sorry, I don't recall which podcaster was interviewing her), but she said that it takes time for your gut microbiome to adapt to a different diet. If you were previously a meat eater, your gut microbiome (gut flora) is very different from someone who is whole food plant based. WFPB eaters consume a lot more fibre, which promotes healthy gut microbiome. But it takes time to grow that good gut flora. It doesn't happen over night. She suggested easing into consuming foods like beans and lentils, or other high fibre foods. You should start with just a couple tablespoons of beans per day. Same goes for other high fibre foods like raw greens, or broccoli. Dr. Sadeghi suggested at first to eat only cooked or steamed vegetables, they are much easier to digest than raw vegetables. You should do this for a few weeks, then gradually shift over to including more raw veggies and green salads. Basically, her advice was to change your diet slowly, and take several weeks or maybe even a couple of months to switch to WFPB diet. I did it this way just by chance, as we slowly stopped eating eggs, then replaced dairy with plant milks, then reduced meat, then eliminated meat. I believe I made the change over about 6 months. I did not experience any low energy, or other bad physical side effects.

      Hello karen, hang in there, do not give up! Yes you are prob detoxing. Be sure you are eating enough. Try going out for a walk, or whatever physical activity you are comfortable doing. Movement is really helpful. I've been vegan over 30 years now and it likely saved my life. It certainly enhances it. Do it for yourself, for the animals, and all the earth. And do it joyfully! Your life will be enhanced.

    ⭐Iron should be taken with Vit C for absorption.⭐ "Megafood" brand is one of the best brands, they are from a food source and natural. Prescription Iron is very hard on your body and hard for your body to absorb.

    • @aussie405
      @aussie405 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is very important not to take iron without medical supervision. There is a genetic condition called haemochromatosis which is more common in people of Irish/ Scottish extraction. It is an iron overload condition. Low iron causes fatigue. High iron causes: fatigue, liver cancer, diabetes, a form of arthritis, it is implicated in Parkinson's disease, heart disease, impotence in men, weird periods in women. It is one of the most common genetic disorders, (about one in every 200 people in Australia) and often overlooked as the vague symptoms depend on where the iron is being stored by the body.
      You are correct, vitamin c enhances iron absorption, tea reduces it. It is pretty much impossible to get multi vitamins for women that don't include iron.

  • @smallfootprint2961
    @smallfootprint2961 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Don't worry about any cholesterol number except the ldl (lousy). Mine is 85... The hdl will automatically go lower if the ldl is lower because they're not needed. Think of the hdl as the garbage truck that has to take away the bad dietary cholesterol when you create it. When you lower your dietary cholesterol... no more garbage trucks... so lower hdl; and also the formula for overall ch doesn't really work any more because the numbers are low. The only reason the docs tell us to get our hdl up is because they don't realize we can lower the ldl so much. It's the way of medical training. It's like taking a pill if something is too high instead of stopping the cause. Also about the iron. Usually internal bleeding is the reason for low iron. Mine was a lifetime of heavy periods and, I believe that using a high dose prescription for a diagnosis of fibromyalgia pain may have contributed to stomach bleeding. By the way, that is much better with the wfpb plan no oil, no sos. Nobody's perfect, but for the most part, I'm there. Back to the iron... My doc took me off the iron too, eventually. I took liquid iron... no constipation... She said it's because we're trying to build up stores, so no need to continue to take the iron. I mention it to my current doc.(NP) whenever I'm going to get blood work done, but so far, so good. Good news about your studies. Thanks for sharing them with us.

    My son has autoimmune liver disease... everyone I know from the liver disease community has ast and alt waaaay higher than yours. My son’s were in the 900s. Some of the variation is due to margin of error, etc. Having said that, I have no doubt that if you were on the road to fatty liver, you nipped it in the bud by going WFPB. Non-alcoholic liver disease is the fastest growing cause of the need for liver transplants. You dodged a bullet! ❤️

    Please check the cost of lab work prior to having the tests performed. Out of pocket expenses can be cost prohibited for some individuals even with insurance plans. Most healthcare providers are not aware of the cost of services for patients. Be a self advocate and proactive to determine if your health situation warrants the costs although an investment in your own health is the best investment you can make.
