      For me it was the ending era for a few good bands. Metallica(91), Guns 'n Roses(92) and Iron Maiden(93). Iron Maiden regrouped with both Bruce and Adrian, but I never got into it again.

    In my humble opinion, the best arrangement of the first S&M was "The Call of Ktulu". To me this song became even better with the orchestra, and once it is an instrumental song, it gave to Michael Kamen the possibility to put the orchestra to share the protagonism with the band.
    If possible, I really want to hear your thoughts about that.
    Greetings from Brazil.
    P.S. another great song (and more than that, a great orchestral arrangement) of the first S&M concert was the previosly unreleased song "No Leaf Clover".

    • @uoabigaillevey
      @uoabigaillevey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree on both suggestions. The orchestra adds so much more chaos to the background.. amplifying the overall feel of the original song.

    • @fadetounforgiven
      @fadetounforgiven 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would say any song would work, but One from the S&M is my favorite song ever, period. I know nothing about music theory and how hard or easy it would be for Kamen to arrange it all, but it works, it does work to me. A lot.

    • @RudyBleeker
      @RudyBleeker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Seems like we have similar taste, because Ktulu and Clover are also my 2 favorite performances on the original S&M.

    I literally have learned about music more from your channel in couple of months than in years i've been paying for the local music school i've been attended to ... I just wanted this to say this that you'd understand how refreshing and educational your channel actually is! There are tons of "reactions" channels but you really are taking songs apart and explaining things from classical point of view which i actually really understand and makes me understand music composition at core. Please keep up your channel! Your channel is one of the best ones out there in YT at the moment!

    Doug, I've been silently stalking your videos for a couple months now and enjoy the heck out of them. Metallica brings an emotion to me that not a lot of bands do. I'm a Fleetwood Mac (all versions thru the years), Dire Straits kind of guy. When you play along it's just fantastic. Always loved listening to piano. Of course that really short piece in Somewhere in time is one of my favorite. I lean hard for Russian composers like Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky. But I wanted to just check in and say I appreciate your videos very much. Thank you.

    This song is hugely significant for me. I lost touch with my daughter for 20 years, she was 7 when we lost touch. We reconnected with each other when she was 27 and discovered that Metallica was significant for both of us and had attached this song to each other in absentia. we saw them live together not long after and emotional isn't the word. Thanks for this review.

    I was there. The S&M concert in 1999 is my favorite album ever. I discovered it as I was coming out from "underneath" of what my parent's listened to which was country and classic rock. I was 14. I was also in band and was hunting marching band music on an 'illegal music service' when I came across "Fuel S&M 1999 Metallica" so I downloaded it. My parent's at the time were divorcing and something in that song just felt GOOD. So I got the entire album and didn't listen to anything else for a year. To this day, I listen to it at least once or twice a week. I know every snare hit, every tom hit, everything about it. When they announced S&M2, I knew I had to go. I paid $1200 for a front row ticket on the secondary market, $500 for plane fare, and like $200 for a single bed in an airbnb. Absolutely worth it. It was the bucket list item that I never thought I'd get to experience and now I've marked off probably the #1 thing I'll ever want in my life. Hope you get to watch the whole thing. It's amazing.

    R.I.P. Michael Kamen. He collaborated on this song from the start… the orchestral arrangement in the original studio version is his work too. If you ever have a chance, check out Kamen’s collective works. Besides all the movie soundtracks he wrote, he worked with a list of music artists that reads like a who’s who of rock: Aerosmith, Guns N’ Roses, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Bon Jovi, David Bowie, Queensrÿche, Rush, Cold Play, Sting, Bryan Adams, The Cranberries, Def Leppard, Lenny Kravitz…

    There's a Finnish band that you should definitely check out: Apocalyptica. They first became known by their first album, "Plays Metallica by Four Cellos", and that pretty much sums up the idea behind the whole band: to play metal by cellos instead of guitars. That obviously makes certain aspects of the song writing and playing very different from original ways of making metal.

    Michael Kamen is the one who made the arrangement on the album too, there is a rare version of the album with only the orchestra+ acoustic guitar and vocals and it's was the song was orginally intended to be. And it's actually after working with them that Michael Kamen told them they should do a whole concert with a symphonic. If you watch the making of the black album there is a section where he talks about that. He said "They told me ok we will think about it and then we never heard of each other, until one day they called me and said you remember the concert we talked about a little time ago? and I said a little time ago? it's a lifetime ago" and so was that huge performance. RIP Michael Kamen and long live metallica.

    To think that James was almost embarrassed of this piece and didn't want it to be for the public. I am so happy he changed his mind!

    Few years ago German power metal band Blind Guardian made a whole album with Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. But the song that I'm suggesting is from their earlier album, also with Prague Philharmonic Orchestra:
    Blind Guardian - Wheel of Time
    The song is about the book series of the same name by Robert Jordan. There is also a TV series in works.

    Metallica was my gateway metal and they will always have a special place in my heart :) From a vocal standpoint btw, it's interesting to hear James' progression. I know he doesn't really consider himself a singer, but the amount of work he's put into learning technique really shows. And of course, he's a phenomenal guitarist.

    Another great video - and really great playing! Did you improv that? Also, if you want to see a similar set-up (i.e., a metal band with a live orchestra), Epica's Sancta Tera - featuring Floor Jansen - is a must. It's full tilt - all the way - and very well EQ'd. Thanks, again, Doug!

    Michael Kamen wrote the arrangement for the studio release, but they ended up not using it. However, they released an acoustic version later on called "the elevator version" with the arrangement, and it's beautiful.

    The fingering for the guitars is the same as the recording in e minor. They just tuned the guitars down a half step. It's similar to wind and brass instruments being tuned to C or Bb, etc.

    There's a song originally by Hüsker Dü but Irish rockers Therapy? did a beautiful treatment of it. Called Diane. There's a great live version with a cello which it just changed the song so much. One instrument making that big a difference it blew my mind. The footage from like Glastonbury or Reading had this electric cello going ham which was cool

    Loved your accompaniment Doug especially when you went down to the bass end of the piano.
    I'd love to see you react to Camel, especially Rhayader from the Snow Goose album. I think you'd love the orchestration. Andy Latimer is a wonderful flautist and sensitive arranger.

I was mesmerised by his performance with the musical skill and talent to get the sounds out of his instrument.

    Another song greatly enhanced by the S&M orchestra is their instrumental "The Call Of Ktulu". Highly suggested. (The one from 1999, just to be sure)

      The best choice. The only issue is poor quality of bass guitar solo sound, it is easy to miss it although it is one of the main features of the song.

    With today's new in-ear monitor technology there are no amplifiers to fight against. They keep 'em in big isolated boxes with a mic throwed in. I think they went for a softer sound in this one with more orchestra presence being a more insightful quiet song.
    I hate to be a pain in the neck but I think you would enjoy Salamanders in the sun by Steve Vai & orchestra. The arrangements were there in the original recording and I think they really shine when played by a stringy horny bunch.
    I know you're a big iron Maiden fan already but want you to love Mr Vai's own musical universe :D
    Anyhow I'm getting hooked to your videos, reactions and perfect pitch! Man are those great skills! Keep it up, Doug!
