    Hello! I’m using this battery for a final project in my chemistry class, and I have a question: what would the chemical equation for this battery be? If I understand correctly, the reactants are activated charcoal/carbon (c), aluminum (Al), salt water (NaCl), and steel, though I do not know what the molecular formula for steel would be, as it is not a single element on the periodic table, and can be made up of a variety of different things.

    does the 9 leds are just connected in parallel or there are some sorts of external circuit? how come these 9 leds are bright with only 55 mA?

    • @yupeng5503
      @yupeng5503  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No. they are connected in series, since the cells are stacked one on top of the other. There isn't any external circuit. As you know it takes small current to light up LEDs, but it does need a voltage of 2.5 - 3V or higher, depending on the color and the type of LED.

      My guess is yes...maybe the steel n alluminium he used too show because we can access for free...but my guess is hammer flatten a coil off copper wire so it is flat like a coin and then hammer some old batteries open n get the zinc n use that it would improve the power I'm sure and also free...old batts n bits off random old wire...there will be lots off ways too improve but the key is making from cheap or free resources 👍👍

    a summing aluminium is the fuel if using thick plates of it and a constant supply of sea water to keep fresh how long before the graphite needs changing or does it just need ajetating? I am inspired by your work to further experiment with this idea

    • @yupeng5503
      @yupeng5503  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there will be holes in aluminium sheet eventually. Using thicker Al sheet/plate will make it last longer. This is an Al-Air battery, charcoal is there to provide large surface area to supply the air; charcoal does not get used up. I put this battery together, because I want it to be portable.

    • @yupeng5503

      I don't think so. Activated charcoal has very large surface area which provides oxygen from the air required for the reaction.

      Never have too replace the charcoal or the plastic pipe...all you need too do is put a few small holes in the bottom and pour salt water in let it drain and wait a short time so the possitive n negative are not connecting via the liquid sort off let the charcoal refill but the rest dry out slightly that's your recharge...probably have too wait 1/2 mins and you got another full charge

    • @yupeng5503

      One could increase the diameter of the cell. But I am not sure it could provide enough current to run regular toy motors, they usually need large current. I would suggest to try a low current micro mini motor like these or a vibrating motor.

      Don't use the steel mesh, it is the problem I think. In fact steel plates are not necessary. I used it because I thought it will make the battery last longer, but???? Check out my new version of 6 Cell Aluminium/Air battery video. It is much simpler to make, and does not use steel plate.

    Would it possible to create a multicelled battery with only one electrolyte sir?

    • @yupeng5503
      @yupeng5503  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Salt water is the only electrolyte used here.

      yes but would it be possible? if I submerged the anode and cathode to the salt water using your design?

    • @yupeng5503
      @yupeng5503  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I don't think it will work. This would make it to become just 1 cell.

      oh so I would get a result similar to creating a battery with a parallel circuit, and stainless steel is both rust and corrosion resistance correct?

    • @yupeng5503
      @yupeng5503  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. Because the rest of the cells will be shorted, therefore, only the top cell will be working. Also stainless steel discs are optional. It will work without it.

    Use Zinc instead of aluminum, potassium sulfate pool cleaner as electrolyte. Trust me

      Pill bottle is the bottle that the Pharmacists use for pill/tablets. For this experiment you can use any bottle with a lid. For a simpler version of this battery, see

    Why not just replace the salt water? The power is coming from the salt water, as it has a disbalance of ions, its the charcoal and aluminum that controls the flow of electrons.

      anode: Al(s) + 3OH−(aq) → Al(OH)3(s) + 3e−
      cathode: O2(g) + 2H2O(l) + 4e− → 4OH−(aq)
      overall: 4Al(s) + 3O2(g) + 6H2O(l) → 4Al(OH)3(s)
