    i would vote bad motivator but i see others saying that could take a long time. so mini barrel is my vote. unless you can put chips in the bad motivator, then try speeding it up that way!
    i enjoy the bottle collecting that comes with this hobby too :)
    you are a wealth of knowledge. i didnt think to try the sight glass at the bottom of the column.

    While I have to agree that barrel entry proof is usually 60-65 in commercial distilleries, it’s really a personal choice. The Badmo barrel heads provide the same wood surface area to volume ratio as a 53 gallon barrel and will age at the same rate so you don’t have any worries about over-oaking. These barrels use new oak air seasoned outdoors for four years. Badmo also sells specialty barrels using second use wood. I vote Badmo all the way. Good series, thanks Randy!

    I’d like to see if a Brita filter pitcher would clear that liquor up. If it tastes good but it’s a little cloudy it might make it a good looking product.

    I have several BadMo barrels and prefer to go in with a higher proof on those. That mini barrel would probably be your best bet to age around 6 months to a year. Wouldn't go much longer than that, would be in the over oaking area.

    Most distillers proof down to around 110p to 125p when aging. if you proof down to 80 it takes a lot longer as the alcohol content isn’t as high. So I would go wood barrel since you proofed it down so low. The Bad mo barrel is meant to simulate the surface area % of a real barrel. So the distillate needs to be higher proof.

    Had you kept the distillate at 55%, I'd have said The Bad Motivator Legacy Barrel, BUT you'd need to leave it in there for 2 years. So, if the oak barrel is a 5 liter one, I'd prefer to see it used . Only takes 4 and a half weeks maximum in that size. 10 liter barrels are 4 and half months maximum. This is the size I'm currently using.

    Hi Randy,
    What exactly is the unit you use for grinding your grains??
    I know it's drill powered......who makes the grinder??
    As usual, you are my go-to for learning this hobby!!
    Best wishes
    Richard

    Do the Bad Mo. If you have anything left use some sticks and compare.
    You haven't said anything about the smokey corn. Did it not come through. Need to know if that would be worth while to try.
    Great series dude.
    Don't forget to do a tasting in a few months.

    Great video,who makes that still?

  • @danthemann
    @danthemann 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    mathematically you need to mix back and forth more or average the ABV in each jar before deciding on how much more water you need. and the big guys proof after aging.

    Hey Randy,do you need to run a dephlegmator with a bubble column or can you get away with running a shot gun condenser from a pot still ?

    • @stillworksandbrewing
      @stillworksandbrewing  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      with bubble plates yes you need a dephlegmator

  • @buffalowings5962
    @buffalowings5962 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You need to put it in the barrel at a higher abv. 50 to 65 abv. So staves or chips.

    I am still new to all this.. I get good clear distillate. but it seems no matter how slow I run the still. It is hot! like burns the mouth hot lol.. I have tried tempering it down to 80 but it still seems strong.. not sure what I can do

    Badmo will take longer than the mini barrel due to surface area. I'm impatient to see the results!
    If there's any extra that doesn't fit, do a stave in a mason jar. I'm curious to see if there's a significant taste difference...

    Bad motivator is my suggestion…
    Unless the small barrel is used.
    I like used small barrels… they don’t over oak so easily.
    Bad motivator obviously has less oak surface area.
    Look into the oak spirals made by barrel mill.
    They’re the best non barrel option.👍🥃

      They’re made by barrel mill.👍🥃

    Hi Randy. I am thinking of doing a few stripping runs on my bourbon and then do a spirit run with the few low wines I have collected on 3 plates. Do you think this would be okay for bourbon. Obviously the washes would be the same.

    • @stillworksandbrewing
      @stillworksandbrewing  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I dont see any problem with that

    • @daveo3122
      @daveo3122 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you use plates, you'll strip a lot of taste out of the bourbon. On a double distillation I go down to 8% on the stripping run, as this gives me just under 40%ABV when combined for the spirit run.

    • @ventman2au

      @@daveo3122Thanks Dave. I do have 500mm / 20inch x 4inch piece I pack with copper to make neautral. Maybe I could take the 4 plates out and add the 500mm piece and leave the reflux off. I presume that would pretty much be a pot still?

    • @stillworksandbrewing
      @stillworksandbrewing  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I would say Badmo if you wouldn't have proofed it down so low. Alcohol is a solvent. The weaker it is the less youll get out of a barrel. My vote is for wood chips and sticks and save the barrels for something higher proof

  • @OVRCOME
    @OVRCOME 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I don’t see how you get away with taking only 6oz of heads. I normally get 2-3 qt jars in before the rubbing alcohol smell goes away and I’m in hearts.
