  • In this video, I take you along for the ride on a backpacking trip I did with my wife Alison in the Emigrant Wilderness in California. I love doing active things and backpacking in the Great Outdoors is one of the things I like to do. Backpacking is great exercise and it's a way to decompress from our overly busy and internet connected lives. Everything gets very simple when you're backpacking. You hike, you eat, you pee, you poo, you set up camp, maybe you do some swimming or fishing in a lake, river or creek and then you repeat the next day. I find it very relaxing even though it can be very physically hard at times. It's a nice retreat that's good for your body, mind and soul.
    Alison and I usually choose to backpack after the trail quota season is over with which is usually in mid September. We like backpacking in the off-season for two reasons. #1, there's way less people to contend with. #2, there's no bugs that are biting you and making you miserable.
    The Emigrant Wilderness area is beautiful and fairly vast so it's an area I plan on exploring more in the future.
    I hope you enjoy it and it inspires you to go out on your own backpacking adventure.

    I used to start my hiking/ camping trips from Kennedy meadows. I love this area. Thanks for sharing. Emigrant lake was a big success for fishing. Planning on a trip there next summer.

      We are headed there this weekend. Never been there at all but was thinking to try and get to Crabtree trial head. Do you know anything about that spot. We are just doing a day hike for now till we figure out the area, and any insight would be helpful.

      Kennedy Meadows proper is nice, but the trail out of there and up is not. There are better routes into the Emigrant.

    Beautiful country. Name the dome 'Alison Dome' no doubt she worked hard to get there. That belongs to her. :-} Enjoyed the video. I need to get back out there, been awhile. Our back yard is Yosemite and Kings Canyon. Thanks Timmy!

    Nice trip TnA! My wife and I have been toying with this same idea since the fires have torched our favorite spots, maybe just 3 nights though. One tip for your tackle box, barbless hooks (or just file them off), it makes catch and release easier and more fish friendly. Did you see any crawdads in immigrant lake? With a quick boil, you can throw them tails in those MREs and increase the yum factor at least one star. As for the stream water, have you tried the LifeStraw? Just fill and go, no pumping necessary. Next hiking tool, drone.
    Keep living your best life!

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Filing off the barbs is a good idea. No crawdads that I could see. I wonder if they can survive in that cold of water. I'll have to check into that LifeStraw.

      fortunately the genuine wilderness is not accessible by bicycle or even, the true deep wilderness, by horse. The true wilderness defends itself effectively. That's what makes it wilderness. And anyways, in federally designated wilderness areas, which means virtually all the high Sierra, for instance, motorized vehicles are not allowed. Of course, you can run them on Forest Service roads, which will beat them to pieces in rapid order. A nice thought.

    Your original planned route was a major butt-kicker. Much smarter to hang out and explore than try to rack up the milegage, kick your own butt and see nothing but trail dust. The trail down Buck Lakes is obvious. The hike from Huckleberry up to Emigrant Meadow Lake is a long haul and the trail from the Emigrant inlet to Emigrant Meadow Lake is sketchy. Great terrain, but Kennedy Meadow is the least friendly trailhead into the Emigrant. Try Gianelli Cabin or Crabtree next time.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the suggestion of where to enter Emigrant. I'm going to check it out.

    • @jimpowell6789
      @jimpowell6789 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You'll be glad. Gianelli Cabin accesses only a few high lakes, but three jewels among them. From Crabtree you can continue through to Deer Lake and beyond or drop south at the first junction, about a mile from the trailhead, the cut-off to Pine Valley, and continue east from there. The lower third of the Emigrant is all cross country and challenging terrain. There are over 40 campable lakes in the Emigrant, nearly all keepers (I've spent nights at 41), and the deeper into the wilderness you go the deeper it gets. Several of the choicest lakes are small, out of the way. (Fraser Lakes up on the ridge above the south shore of Emigrant, for instance. Approach them up the groove that starts east of the outlet. Estella Lake is another -- it's name isn't even on the topo.) The territory along the Yosemite border and over it is major good mountaineering, challenging cross-country. Remember to learn the needed skills, practice them, be safe. People involved in search-and-rescue say that the common denominator in serious wilderness accidents is people over-estimating their capacities and under-estimating the challenges of the terrain. Solo is exponentially riskier, solo cross-country still more. Happy trails and even happier off-trails.

      @@jimpowell6789 Thanks for sharing all this information with me Jim. I appreciate it! You have definitely thoroughly explored the Emigrant Wilderness. I'd like to explore it more myself. I haven't done much off trail exploration, but I'd like to. I'm not an expert on Orienteering but with all the electronic gadgets like my smart phone and my Garmin inReach, I would feel more confident navigating off trail. Happy Trails to you too. I'll be retiring soon and will have much more time for exploration in the mountains. Take care!

    • @jimpowell6789
      @jimpowell6789 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TimmyTheToolman There's a hundred days of exploring to do in the Emigrant without going off-trail, and doing it is the way to learn how to do it. Crosscountry is something to work your way into slow and careful. Get the PAPER USGS 7.5 minute topo(s) for where you're hiking and a compass and start learning to use them. Learning to read a topo takes time and patience, but it's self-explanatory once you see how it works, and it's indispensable if you want to go off-trail. Find a local high point where you can see a lot of terrain, sit down, orient your map with the compass and then start looking around and fitting what you see to what's on the map.
      I would NEVER trust an electronic gadget as a substitute. For all the obvious reasons. One year we ran into a guy at a trail junction between West Fork Cherry Creek and Wood Lake. He didn't know where he was and asked us. He was using a GPS. It turned out he had hiked six miles in a circle. He'd taken a wrong turn at the junction between Rosasco and Pingree, which is easy to do since there is no real trail there, just two routes crossing in the middle of acres of bare granite slick rock. But with a compass and a topo, and paying the kind of attention they exact, he wouldn't have made his wrong turn. Trusting his GPS he might have spent the rest of the day going in circles. And of course, if your gadget fritzes, or you drop it on that hard Sierra granite, or the battery fails ... and you're depending on it, ... you're screwed. Tom Harrison's Emigrant Wilderness map is real good for an overview, but nothing beats the 7.5 minute USGS topos for detail.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @jimpowell6789 Yeah, I never 100% rely on an electronic device. I always have a regular map with me.
