    That was a great watch. Thank you for sharing. Glad you and Chris found each other again. That tension was a bit palpable. Please show more footage of this trip, because I'd love to see you guys catch some fish up there and maybe fry them up.

      Thanks! They're probably be 2 or 3 more videos, depending on how the footage pans out. We did two more days at Buck and 2 at Deer catching fish.

    we did a 30 mile loop in the Emigrant a few years back, stayed two nights at Deer Lake. Late August water was warm but managed to catch a few trout. Those stone steps you showed may have been built by some of the same young adult workers we ran into when we were up there (maybe California Conservation Corps?), young, strong men and women who were spending a week up there working on the steep sections of trail and creek crossing, moving large stones to create steps into place. Impressive, I think due to wilderness regulations they were not allowed any machined tools or moving equipment it all had to be done manually. They all had pick-axes , shovels, other manual tools etc. This was a group of about 30 of these young folks spread out over about a quarter mile on the trails north of Deer Lake.

      That is impressive. Yeah, this section of the Emigrant is famous for them. I'm sure it helps with erosion given the terrain. Especially give the amount of pack train traffic. Pretty definitely the CCC. I've never seen that large a group however. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing!

    Great video Jim! I’ve been hope you would take that route as it’s one of my favorites. Wanted to know if it was hikable…now I know thanks to you! Can’t wait for part 2.

      Really? I was using my phone and a pretty high resolution and at 60FPS. Getting it off my phone and into Adobe was a nightmare. I'm glad you like it. I'll it admit, it looks better on TH-cam than it did when I was editing it. For some reason the colors look different. LOL.
      Thanks for watching!

    Great vid. And a good reminder about how things (potentially) can go wrong on the trail, regardless of experience and preparedness.
    I will be back in the Emigrant next month for a solo trip, and this was the extra bit of inspiration I needed. Bravo.
    P.S. Time to try out a quilt, Jim. Ditched my sleeping bag long ago and never looked back.

    • @highcountrychronicles
      @highcountrychronicles  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Yes, very definitely. About the quilt, yeah, Chris has one and was talking up the benefits. If I can find one that's rainproof and breathable, I may just have to grab one. That's something for me to work on over the winter break. :D

    (I just realized you were there a month ago, not August). Original comment: I was there the 29th and 30th (first time!), though not as far. Must have just missed you guys. It's weird, the bugs were practically nonexistent for me. I never have issues with mosquitoes though. No bites, didn't need my net. I once fished with a guy in a tiny boat and he got eaten alive while I didn't even notice any bugs at all. Glad you guys found each other!

    • @highcountrychronicles
      @highcountrychronicles  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, we were there July 26 - 30th. We must have just missed you. Oh, I see you just published the trip. Cool!

      @highcountrychronicles  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh. You were there August 29 and 30. Yeah. Bugs mostly gone by then.

    Jim, you do a great job in your videos, explaining your approach and simply taking us along on the hike. I've also been there, fretting over a missing/lost participant. May I suggest whistles? They carry sound much farther than anyone can shout, and don't need batteries. But also suggest the importance of having talked through with your partner or group ahead of time how we'll deal with someone getting lost? I'm glad all turned out for the best, and that you found a good/better site there at the end.

    • @highcountrychronicles
      @highcountrychronicles  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Fortunately, we talked about where we'd camp and were both heading to the same place. A whistle is a brilliant idea. I had one on me but frankly, forgot all about it. I guess it's a situational thing. Had I been lost or injured. I would have used it but never thought of using it in the reverse. Another great take away from this experience. Thanks!

    Very nice video, I hike that area frequently; I know the feeling you must of felt when your buddy was MIA. Glad it all worked out! Question, did the deer ever get up or leave?

    • @highcountrychronicles
      @highcountrychronicles  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yes, the deer was ok. Apparently it's a thing here as we saw several deer apparently bedding down by the water.

    Losing your partner for awhile can raise the anxiety level. So glad he was ok. After this last winter the lakes are full and the mosquitoes are out for sure. Beautiful lake!

    I was out at Piute Lake a few weeks ago. The mosquitos were so bad I stayed in my tent the whole time.

    • @highcountrychronicles
      @highcountrychronicles  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the really were. They're apparently still bad at higher elevations...

    Awesome video. That looked really stressful losing your buddy and worrying if he got hurt. Damn you got a lot of bites. Brutal. I went to Bear Lake early August for the first time and the mosquitoes were really bad. I didn't get bit at all with permethrin treated clothes, picaridin, and the bug head net. I'm planning on heading back but maybe checking out as far as Gem Lake. Are there fish in Piute Lake, Cherry Creek, or Gem Lake? I might just head back to Bear if the fishing is good there.

    • @highcountrychronicles
      @highcountrychronicles  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Thanks! It was a bear to finish and there are probably 3 or more from this trip that I have to finish. I'm actually planning to go back and check on the fish situation in Piute and Gem. Historically, Piute has no natural spawning and spawning at Gem is poor. Ironically, I was using picaridin but I find that it is extremely poor at keeping bugs off. A least for me. Typically works for an hour before needing to be reapplied. My permethrin treated pants worked well until maybe day 2 or 3 when maybe they were too dirty to do whatever it is that permethrin is supposed to do....

    • @rodoutdoors
      @rodoutdoors ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@highcountrychronicles Awesome, thanks! Maybe I'll head back to Bear and try my luck. Yeah I noticed I'll have to reapply picaridin often. I treated all my clothes the night before and only did an overnighter so maybe that was difference.

    hey jim, did u have saran wrap on ur shoes at the stream crossing??? haha . i just cross in my shoes, i find salomon's speedcross non goretex version to be the best for hikes that require stream crossing , the material is extremely thin and seems to dry up incredibly fast !

      😅 Yeah, they're water proof shoes so... works both ways.. once it's in, I usually have to take them off and turn them upside down. 🤣

    hey jim, m curious as to why u didnt take the lollipop route from kennedy - summit creek-bucks-relief ? i wud imagine it wud be a lot less buggy than frm crabtree

    • @highcountrychronicles
      @highcountrychronicles  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, we were considering a Kennedy Crabtree loop but satellite showed that there was snow in lunch meadow and the rest of the way into Emigrant. Emigrant had just iced out and the even the route between Buck and Emigrant still had some snow the day before we left.
      Never considered going out via Relief Valley for a few reasons, the main one being the Rangers were dissuading anyone from attempting to cross Relief Creek.
      Frankly though. I've never had any desire to go in there. Guess I'll have to do it eventually...
