Why do all academics keep separating Romans, Athenians, Lydians, Macedonians etc as if they are “different countries with different languages”? It’s ridiculous, especially since the Roman aristocracy spoke GREEK in the Senate. Rome was a Greek City as was Pompeii!!
great emperor ? more of an average one i would say. he never left rome and he did nothing to halt those barbarian unrests across the borders which rome paid later with the reign of marcus aurelius who was forced to make war in the whole of his reign against the germans due to the reluctance of antoninus pius. i could bet easily that if he lived in the 5th century he would be another failed emperor in the west. majorian who also failed in the 5th century by losing to the vandals in 461 ad was much better emperor and energetic than pius who was just lucky to be emperor at the HEIGHT OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE 2ND CENTURY AD. The only somewhat territorial success he had was to create a more northern britain frontier above the hadrian wall the well known antonine wall which was the farther north frontier of the roman empire. yet it was abandoned just a few years after pius died in the reign of commodus.
In my opinion, Antoninus Pius might just be the best emperor Rome ever had. A 23 year reign that was stable, and mainly peaceful, and where many improvements were made.
Emperors wanna replicate an Augustus or a Trajan, who were great but their reigns also very eventful. No one wants to be an Antoninus precisely because he was just a passer of the torch between Hadrian and Aurelius. Yet he when it comes to it, he was probably the best peacetime emperor ever.
Given the tendency of Roman emperors to get assassinated when they screwed up somehow, I'd say Antoninus Pius's long reign is itself proof that he succeeded. He kept the empire happy and stable enough for all those years, that's incredibly rare in itself.
@@carbontooth I'd argue that since the 5 Good Emperors Period began with him, and he started the tradition of emperors adopting talented and experienced successors, that Nerva was the trendsetter.
The best leaders are ones that history barely sees even after being in power for 2 decades. It means there were no wars, no famines, no civil unrest, no corruption, no political assassinations, no breakdown of law and order, no disease, no economical slump and no other events of note. Basically, it means they kept everyone happy and kept things ticking over well. It means their power did not corrupt them and it means they were genuinely good and competent leaders who had both the desire and the wisdom to make life as comfortable as possible for everyone, public finances were well managed, people were content and in general all went well. Getting a thumbs up from everyone is incredibly difficult, but he managed it. Basically, everyone was just chill and lived well. The emperor could sit back and smile at the sunset knowing he was doing a good job. Those kinds of rulers are exceedingly rare.
finally Antoninus Pius, the most underrated roman emperor of all time. easily up there as top 10 emperors of all time. I already know this video bangs!
Not an accident, we live in a world carrying devices used to gather intelligence, pursue surveillance and are utilized for the purposes of reconnaissance. Welcome to the shackles of technology.
This man most definitely deserved every accolade bestowed upon him. Unimaginative? Quite the contrary. It undoubtedly required a GREAT deal of imagination, along with tremendous diplomacy, to satisfy the entire range of Roman society as well as the politicians. It is a shame we do not hear more of him, but I suppose this can be attributed to, as stated by the moderator, the lack of evidence & records of that time. Outstanding piece. Keep up the great work. joeinbuenosaires 😎
If we accept that a ruler's prime responsibility is to ensure the happiness of his subjects and to ensure a secure future for their country and their descendants, Emperor Antonius Pius has performed above and beyond the call of duty ! What more can you ask of a ruler?
He was an effective and hardworking emperor and quite surprised that writers during his reign did write little of him but nonetheless he could place among the top 10 or even 5
When things go so well for so long that history has practically nothing to say about it - that was Antoninus Pius. He secured a full generation of peace and stability for the people of the Roman Empire - the zenith of the Pax Romana. After him, the Empire's luck finally began to run out.
The substantial pain hadrian suffered reminds me of the pain that herod the great suffered before his death. Ive heard doctors suspect kidney failure for both as that disease is known to bw horrificalky painful to the point that suicide is often attempted.
He has been rememberd for only good things as being just, fighting curroption, makeing sure the pepol(his subjects) were not taxes to much and got help ect when nessery, and being mild humbul and fair ruler, and all in all I think that is good reputation he got in the end considering the times
While he lacked the glamor or "dash" of Emperors like Trajan or Marcus Aurelius, Antoninus Pius holds the honor of being the Emperor who ruled over Rome when it was at its height of peace and prosperity. He was an excellent administrator and seems to have been well-liked by both the aristocracy and the commoners of the Empire.
Ah yes, to take an anime example, he is the "if Jiraiya had accepted to be Hokage". I always found it endearing, how prideful Marcus Aurelius was about his adoptive father. We can really see from the writings that he was a good emperor and an excellent mentor for Marcus. Definitely an excellent choice, from Hadrian for the Empire's future, and his grand nephew's education.
During the period in which Antoninus Pius was emperor, trade between Rome and India and between Rome and the intermediaries for Chinese goods in Petra and Palmyra reached its peak. At the time, the expensive Chinese silk reworked in the East to become a very light and almost transparent fabric was much appreciated by the Roman matrons and this scandalized the more conservative Romans. Since the emperor of Rome had been the great economic beneficiary of this trade since the time of Augustus, the new fashion probably damaged the image of Antoninus Pius among the supporters of the less libertine customs of the Roman matrons. The plague that devastated the Roman Empire in 165-166 AD, originating in China (where it also caused immense damage) ended this Eastern trade and crippled the Roman Empire beyond repair. The beginning of the decline of Rome, which began soon after the period of Antoninus Pius and because of an economic activity from which the emperor benefited, probably made him an accursed among the Roman emperors. This might explain why he was forgotten.
Requesting with Please and THANK YOU, something about a man called Manfred Richtoffen?/Richttofeln? I heard a 'bruit' about. Intrigued, but not enough to go searching on a Sunday!!!
Of all the emperors he has to be one of the more decent ones. to have rule the roman empire with little issues, and succession problems are un heard of during before or after his death. also to have a sound economic policy that actually left funds in coffers for the next emperor and the roman empire also was almost unheard for any ruler of any empire before or after in the was unique. To become a ruler at his old age and to die of natural causes was also unheard of as well. plus he was very rich man from both sides of his family was also something that was almost uniquely different about pius. Another thing was not to take any mistresses and to not have orgy bath parties that was common and roman and greece during ancient times and especially during his time is very rare. He was most definitely the exception and not the rule for sure.
I think poor young Marcus had little choice in his marriage to Antoninus’ 15 yr old daughter Faustina, which led to the reign of Commodus😢The succession was supposed to be completely non hereditary. I argue the decline of Rome started with Antoninus
antoninus good dudius optimus maximus. you dont see his sort of humility and charitable nature outside of the extremely religous very much and almost not at all amongst roman aristocracy aside from agrippa. what induces a man of his stature, who could indulge in every excess and still retain his status, to act in such a manner is a baffling mystery.
It sounds to me like my guy had some Asian influence in his philosophy. The ritual giving away of power. The inability to accept what was not felt deserved. //// The fact that without chaos... the world provided; entropy. It was understood that the black plague originated in Asia as well. It also sounds like the way I rule. Yet we are only a 1st year Manager. It is the way I would like to rule. . . Does that mean I have to accept a foolish gold digging wife? Better than nothing, I presume. Icebreakers are necessary, yet when there is no ice to break... they will break literally everything else. All is purposeful.
This would have been a fascinating and informative video, if it had not been for the tedious artificial voice giving the commentary. I'm afraid I'm logging out after 17 minutes.
The images of slow mo baby faces, hairy pigs, and little girls gathering flowers in the out back are incredibly off topic and distract from the information presented.

Fantastic documentary. From the aesthetics of the video to the very reasonable assumptions made where needed. Excellent.
Thanks For this! Love your content guys ❤❤❤❤
Thanks. Guy finally got some spotlight.
Great documentary on an emporer that is usually skipped over entirely. I learned a lot this emporer.
Enjoyed this ever so much about this great Emperor. Thank you!
The aesthetic is appreciated
Given the tendency of Roman emperors to get assassinated when they screwed up somehow, I'd say Antoninus Pius's long reign is itself proof that he succeeded. He kept the empire happy and stable enough for all those years, that's incredibly rare in itself.
Among five good emperors Trajan was the conqueror, Hadrian was the builder, Aurelius was the philosopher but Antoninus was truly the good one
And Nerva, whose reign was so peaceful and moderate he wasn't even mentioned.
@@carbontooth time of 5 emperors was truly Rome golden age
@@carbontooth I'd argue that since the 5 Good Emperors Period began with him, and he started the tradition of emperors adopting talented and experienced successors, that Nerva was the trendsetter.
He was the maintainer.
He focused on holding what he had, not on craving what he didn't.

This is so freaky. I was just reading about Marcus Aurelius and how he was elevated by Antoninus and suddenly this video pops up.

He’s one of the “Good” emperors but I see your point. Maybe not forgotten. Overlooked
Thank you. I've been waiting for this one.
Also I would like to ask if you are planning to remake the older video about Hadrian?
Maybe 😁
Antonius being tired of his predecessor's crap and actually improving things. Legendary.

According to his track record this guy is probably one of the best and least controversial Roman emperors but nobody remembers him.
He achieved one of the few things others before could not, lasting stability. There is no greater strength in a society than stability.
