I have looked up to Monty and his work for years. I even have `Keep moving forward` tattoo'd on me. Also, I love how much this video explains how important to show not tell even in action scenes.

Same with Dillon, which is why I look up to him, then I found you, and Shane. I enjoyed this thoroughly, because in the back of our minds, we all want to make something meaningful to some capacity.

I like this. It explains why Yugioh: Dark Side of Dimensions hits so uniquely--that movie's explicit evocation of the manga also demonstrates that the principles outlined here hold true for manga.
RWBY is different now, for better and for worse--Monty Oum's passion for these refined dimensions means that it couldn't have stayed the same without him. You're doing an excellent job reminding us of what made early RWBY so distinctive while allowing us to appreciate how the show continues to echo his ethos in its own way.

RWBY needed this video 10 years ago. RWBY needed a lot of things I suppose, but not much to do about that now sadly. Good video, cheers.

dead fantasy honestly has such great examples of visual storytelling it blows me away, like how team ff fights so precisely and in tune with each other in contrast to team doa.
one moment i really like that plays with this is in dead fantasy 2 right before the building collapse, when team doa gets slayed (again) and ayane makes another move to attack. kasumi holds her back and seems to give her instructions, and ayane brushes her shoulder off in an annoyed way but still complies. and i feel like this moment conveys so much abt their personalities, their relationship and even their values, or at least enough to get you to care about and become intrigued by the dynamic there. monty was really great at implementing these kinds of small but compelling character moments.

"cough" if I may make a recommendation on a story without words, I highly look up the Birth of the Sandman from Spiderman 3 2007. The animation from every single grain of sand to the body movements and language and the score just being hot fudge and a cherry on top.

Great video and I agree 100% with the rest of it! Also good to see Monty's whole career get some spotlight as I was one of his OG fans from the Haloid days and dedicated my first self published book to him and my late mom who also helped my taste in media.

I watched most of the videos about the proccess you made and holy, all of them are so great.
Currently am trying to make a 7-10 minute animation that is inspired by the storytelling in the original trailers of RWBY and so far, your videos have made the direction in which I should go so much clearer.

While I don't work in visual storytelling (yet) these are good things to keep in mind for just the writing process too!
I'm a relatively recent subscriber via your RWBY videos, so it was a treat to see this kind of tutorial video by you! Keep doing what you're doing, Cake Station!

Loved the video @CakeStation! Can't wait for the next video man! Glad to finally hear your voice and also get some Shots of RWBY and Final Fantasy. RIP Monty Oum, May your Hard Work continue Driving the Community you so Prematurely Left Behind to Uphold the Production Standards you made and Allow others to Join said Community.
It is true that Visuals are a Part of Telling the Story, but I didn't expect it to be a Massive Part as in Massive with a Capital Giant. I've always loved watching Series like RWBY, but I dropped off after Volume 6 hoping 7 would be uploaded. Obviously, that didn't happen and I think even Crunchyroll (which is owned by SONY, Black Rock Financial and a Certain Political Party out in Beijing) got the Rights to RWBY from Rooster Teeth.
Space Engineers Community TH-cam Content Creator @CaptainJack does something similar with all of his Series in his Colony Universe and it's now to the Point where there's an Actual Fandom/Wiki for every Ship Class and Type and even the Actual Builds in-game are now being uploaded to the Steam Workshop. It may not be Digital Animation/Filmmaking, but you've still got the Visuals playing a Pretty Massive Part of the Overall story.
Let me know what you think about this and I'll catch you in your next video man!

It's really easy, take a long catalogue of meaningful gestures, facial expression, bodylanguage, and cultural concepts and use them as intended to express those things. Just eliminate the dialogue in a scene and only detail out the emotional qualities and general intent of these things. It's the easiest thing ever unless you don't pay attention to these things. Then you have a bigger problem of being socially inept.

2:08 I disagree as I never heard anyone discibe an action only peice a media well done mind you boring... Instead it's the opistie it's taxing like an 3 hour long rollercoster not a 3 hour long passnager jet ride.

I suppose the point is more or less the moment when the audience becomes uninterested and disengages, whether it be described as boredom or exhaustion. Perhaps a bad choice of words on my part.
