Spoon-billed Sandpiper: Hatch
ฝัง

- Spoon-billed Sandpipers lay 4 eggs in a simple tundra nest comprised of a shallow depression, most often in mosses, lined with a few dwarf willow leaves. The nest is incubated by both adults on half-day shifts -- the male most often during the day and the female at night. After 21 days of incubation the eggs begin to hatch in a process that takes a day or more to complete. When the young finally emerge from the nest they stumble about on well-developed legs and feet and begin to feed themselves. After the last chick emerges, the male begins his job of leading the chicks as they grow towards independence about 20 days later; the female soon departs and begins moving south. This piece captures the first moments of life at a wind swept Spoon-billed Sandpiper nest.
Video includes commentary by The Cornell Lab's Gerrit Vyn.
Filmed July 7, 2011 near Meinypilgyno, Chukotka, Russia.

What lovely footage of such beautiful animals. Thank you for so eloquently bringing the spoon-billed sandpipers to the world!
The cryptic coloring...the vocalizations...Lovely. Can't fathom what kind of ignoramus would thumbs-down this.
Seconded 100%.
thank you for this film, love the spoon-billed sandpiper:
I see a number of "dislikes". Geez folks, until you've experienced these precious birds, and, learned about their plight and realize how any and all public awareness (like this you tube video) helps their survival. Experiencing these beautiful creatures a couple years ago was a cherished moment in my life !.
What a wonderful world in which we live. Wish we could see it in person. Thanks.
Thanks for shearing this wonderful documentary, participated losers of shorebird survey particularly for Spoon-billed Sandpiper but never saw this amazing bird on the nest or breading plumage.
I like the blind construction. And the receded vocalizations complete this wonderful experience!
What a beautiful photographic capture and narrative! Without films like this, we would never be so privileged to see this.
This was a wonderful gift, to see this film. The mother and chicks are so beautiful, and watching how the mother looks out for them is so touching. Thank you!
What a great informational, observational account of sandpiper hatching/parenting!!! Evolution at work here, wonderful video, wonderful narrating, and THANK YOU for doing this work!!!
Wow! What beautiful creatures...and a great story about an animal dad taking care of raising the babies once they have all hatched. Thank you for being so dedicated and patient. Amazing.
Once I saw the chicks I screamed. So precious.
What a fantastic short film, and congratulations on witnessing it.
Amazing to watch hatchlings forage for food immediately after hatching. We need to protect these wonderful birds!
What a delight! Thank you to the wise and patient photographer! I'm so pleased the father reappeared and that there is hope for the species.
Waw teeny lil beauties! And their down is like exactly matching the grasses with matching fringes of the moss type plants! So amazing.
Superb, so comforting to see chicks of this absolute rarity.
Makes me cry with bitter sweet realizations.
I am glad this is posted. This is as close to this gorgeous bird as I will ever get. Made my heart sing.

Thanks to Gerrit for these fascinating and informative videos. I never heard about these wonderful birds. Never to old to learn!
I have just read an article that said the spoon billed sandpiper travels such great distances, about 8000 km in total from South-East Asia to breed on the lowland, commonly called turdra, in North-East Russia
Thank you for having the patience and dedication to record these events and bring them to us!
Thank you for sharing this beautiful story.
Such amazingly specialized and enduring creatures, these Spoon-billed Sandpipers, besides being utterly charming! I love their sounds, communicating.
Yes, I was wondering this myself as I listened to the narration. I hope the lab responds. :)
Worderfull footage of this rare Sandpiper
Good work, I appreciate the amount of time you spent to get this. Keep it up.
Thanks for spending all that time filming, I'm very glad that I got to see these little guys before they become extinct, which HOPEFULLY they will not.
Absolutely wonderful, the supreme beauty of Mother Nature and a truly amazing work.. thank you so much!♥
A very unique behaviour , i've never seen bird chicks so independednt of their parents.
wonderful capture of the vocalizations as well as the video.
Great video. Great dedication by the biologist. Incredibly rare bird. I hope they can make a comeback. Awesome stuff. I'm no expert, but I hadn't heard of a bird that only stayed in the nest one day and fed itself from the moment he was born. Wow!
James, Kildeers are also "precocious". So fun to watch in my yard!
Beautiful! So lucky are we to see this - even if from afar.
I can"t believe that they feed themselves from day one!!

Feeding themselves from day one! I wonder what other species show this adaptation.
Yes, you heard right. The female leaves and the male stays behind for a few days. Then the male leaves the chicks by themselves. Then they fly south along the flyway.

fantastic video
I’ve been reading about the plight of these birds in the WWT magazine, they are running a breeding and reintroduction program. This video is beyond amazing, thank you so much for making it showing us one of the rarest birds in the world. I have to ask, but how do you manage eating, drinking and defecating when you are in a hide (blind) for so long without alarming the bird?
Nice video.....thanks for sharing!
Thank you. This is beautiful
Nature is always fantastic!!

Espetacular!!
