Definitely use discount Hawaii car rental! We use that everytime visiting the islands. Last month our Jeep rental was $190 for the entire week! Definitely scored ☺️
Gretchen Genrich hello, I would just always double check the pricing. The good thing about discount Hawaii car rental was that the payment wasn’t due until you were getting your car
Just got back from a trip to Maui. We used Turo and it was unbelievably clutch for us. Much cheaper than most of the sky-high rental car options we saw, and ubers/lyfts were pretty much non-existent in many places. We definitely would have struggled to do many of the things we wanted to do without a car. For anyone planning a trip to Maui soon check out Turo!
i"m glad you wrote about Turo. I am going to Maui in June and we had decided not to rent a car because they were just too expensive. Then somehow I happened on to Turo. That is who we will use in June.
We just returned from two weeks on Maui. Rented at the airport with a Costco reservation and selected a full size car from Alamo. Perfect for the four of us.
Great tips Jordan & Erica! We are planning our first trip to Maui & have been checking out all your Volgs. Great info!!! And yes, we subscribed! Mahalo from Canada! :)
Maur No Kai Oi! Can't wait to get there myself.....will share this to my guests who stay at my vacation rentals on Oahu...I can see an increase of visitors in Waikiki! That helps our economy!
Thank you. Better must rent a car absolutely because sometimes we need to go some where else like enjoy food, places we don't have to take any transportation.
costco car rental is great as well. Another note is to never prepay and check rates daily for your trip. Its a bit of work but Ive done this for the past 10 years and The rates fluctuate like crazy and you can save tons. thanks for the great videos, especially nice to see what its like on Maui since our last trip was canceled. cant wait to get back!
TURO is the way to GO!... Spent 6 days in Maui back in Dec 2020, Used TURO to rent a Toyota Prius C for $50/day, we stayed at an resort on the west side and drove to all points of the island(except for the road to Hana) and only used half a tank of Gas. going with the normal rental agency's vehicles would have cost alot more.
I think you really need to make a video updating people about the rental car shortages going on in Hawaii (well and most other places, too). Moral of the story is the car rental needs to be the first thing you book after the airfare.
We are having the same issue. Our trip was planned last minute for us so not much advance planning. Now the car rentals are extremely high and many are sold out for the week we are going. So, I totally agree, from my experience....... car rental first! Thank you for the video, it was so helpful!
We booked a 7 day car rental through Go Rent a Car in Maui for $369 total end of March. They had excellent reviews and easy pickup/dropoff service at the airport. Hoping for the best!
I'm so lucky that I see your video and you said it is $130 per day. One week ago, I tried to reserve for the whole week and it says $3500 per week I was shocked and did not rent. After seeing your video, I separate some days out and it actually turned out to be $115 per day for less days not the whole week. Even though I need to take the bus to the airport to pick up the car, but it worth it.
This was a great video! We booked our trip and we wanted to rent a jeep for the week for our upcoming 2021 summer trip. We went through Kihei rent a car! They were by far the cheapest rate and they were extremely friendly! Thank you!
I love your videos! Extremely informative! I know nothing about Hawaii and enjoy learning what I need to know before we go. You guys are the best!! Thank you!!
I'm going to be staying in Maui for a week after Thanksgiving for a class. Planning on staying at the campgrounds instead of the hotel so will definitely need to rent a vehicle.
Thanks for posting road conditions! I was really nervous, but now I'm just excited. It's good to know the roads are so well maintained and that the speed limits are reasonable.
Glad y'all did a video on this one. I just purchase a vacation house on Wailea Golf Vistas property. I was just thinking of what kind of vehicle to purchase. So this video def helps on what to purchase.
Thank you guys so much for this video! Watched this in the afternoon, reached out to EVERY rental company you linked below the same day, and got 1 of the LAST cars available for a really decent price for my upcoming trip! Manaloha Car Rental is not price gauging like many others, their prices doubled, but no where near the $150/day rates that you are seeing. You guys are the best, watching all your other videos now!
I wouldn’t pick a hotel based on free parking. Many are booking hotels with points and free night certificates. For May, I’m seeing $262 SUV car rental from Costco Alamo for four days, so $462 for four days. Makes sense.
My family and I just spent the Thanksgiving holiday on Maui and we used Discount Hawaii, $250 for a minivan for six days....cant beat it!! The van was through Dollar, we were checked in and out within minutes and the tram was a fun bonus!! :)
Jordan and Erica, first of all, thank you for all the great videos. You two do the best job of any of the myriad videos I’ve seen. Question….are you allowed to take the top off of a rental Jeep? I want to rent a Jeep when we go in September, but only if we can take the top off. Thank you and keep up the great videos.
Our rental was 1165 for the week. Worth every penny, choices ranged from 700ish to $$$$$$$ I got the minivan, lol trip was 3-10-22 til 3-15-22 we stayed in Lahaina
Aloha! Thank you for the great tips for renting a car especially with the shortage in vehicles at the moment. I liked that you always featured Kihei Car Rental which I just made a reservation with. Last time in Maui, we rented at the airport, but with rental over 1k for a week is really not in our budget. I would do another activity and have great food instead. So renting from Kihei Car Rental will be a new experience. We appreciate your help. Mahalo!
thanks for watching! We have a video on when we rented a camper van on the road to Hana. Camping was closed due to covid for years, so just recently fully opened again. Camper rentals is contentious on the island due to the amount of homeless camping, beach camping, and lack of spots to camp. If you get a camper, know where you're going to park safely first.
Enterprise has a Kahului location just outside the airport and you save the airport tax. I assume that the old Kahului Safeway has been replaced by the one at the Safeway Express. I never rent convertibles in Hawai'i because it rains and there is very little storage space. And it is obvious that you are a tourist as no locals buy them. You guy make me want to be back on the Islands. Oh, how I miss them.
Another vote here for Discount Hawaii Car Rental! I have been using them since 2014. Definitely saves money over dealing directly with the rental company.
We will make one soon but see our TH-cam Shorts as we give updates in those minute long videos. We also give updates in our bi-weekly newsletter: thehawaiivacationguide.com/openupdates/
I've been using Discount Maui Car Rental I found them about 8 years ago and always go through them. I pay a little extra so that they fill the vehicle up upon return rather than trying to find a gas station. I love your channel (I just found it) and miss not being in Maui last year. Keep up the awesome videos
Thanks for the tips. I will definitely look more into the local rental spots on the next trip. When we were there I joked that you can tell the locals from the tourists. The locals all have Toyota Tacos and tourists drive Jeeps and convertibles.
We reserved a intermediate size (corolla) through Costco Travels for $500 for 8 days. While the local companies has the same dor $380/$390, if we consider the price of uber to pick up/drop + convenience with kids, costco prices seem fair. Also there is no prepayment required.
Every bit of info you’ve given me about Maui has been spot on - until today. Update on pricing --we rented for 8 days at the beginning of June 2022 and the cost was $1,100 for a compact car through Budget. We prepaid in March. Gas was around $6 a gallon at this time. Loved the freedom of the a rental and we fully explored the island but the rental car expense was painful.
Yep i rented for a month in October and prices were at least double the ballpark numbers quoted here. Seems inflation has really hit. I used Kihei rent a car (used them before) and they were about 1/2 the price of the majors. YOu get a beat up car but it works and also you dont stand out as a tourist so much (eg with a car that might have valuables inside). PLus i dont think they are too bothered about the odd small ding or dent likeyou may get penalised for if you have a shiny almost new rental.
Amazing video guys, such great content and info. Thank you guys for the heads up! I'd imagine it's a bit more expensive now with the economy how it is.
Looks like you really need to book rental cars in advance I looked for rentals for tomorrow (just to see what last-minute availability would be like) and everything is sold out nothing available.
I kept reading that the backside of Haleakala was aweful, I guess this is where being from the country and visiting countries like Mexico pays off. The road was not the worst I’ve been on, but it def is not for the inexperienced. I had a mid size SUV though so that did help. However, it was one of the most peaceful and beautiful drives I had in Maui. I enjoyed it more than road to Hana. 😅
Thanks for sharing your experience! We did it in a sudan without a problem, but you are right, one should be comfortable driving it. We have a video on it here: th-cam.com/video/Lj8KAWLfhlk/w-d-xo.html
Use kimo’s car rental. We used them for two weeks and it was less than one week from any other place. Used the “newer” option which was a 2015 I believe ... rav 4. Car was perfect. Unless you need a flashy vehicle they are the best! Great memories
We have been going to Maui for ten years now and each time we learn. We stay usually for ten days at a time so we try to plan all outings away from the resort three days in a row and then we only have a three day rental. We find that the resort has such great free shuttles to so many places it’s not worth leaving a rental sitting in the parking lot.
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide Yeah when I was in Oahu in 2005 I did notice some mainland license plates. Is it because they shipped their car over or did they just buy a car new in Hawaii with their mainland registration?
Costco, Costco, Costco!!! They are the way to go for car rentals....renting a premium class car 3/31/21-4/12/21 and total cost is $460, free cancellation and you don’t actually get charged until you return the car. The key is to book as early as possible and then periodically check prices as they drop rebook and cancel the original, rinse and repeat.
@@CVCC yep I don’t doubt it, even my rental would be $2000 if I was booking now, but if I was going in Sep it would be $900. Like I said, the key is to book as early as you can if you see any kind of decent price and then as time goes on the price will drop so then rebook and cancel your original, do that as often as you want/need to to get the best price...yeah it’s sometimes a bit of a pain but it doesn’t cost anything except a little time.
we provide short videos on updates on the rental car situation. the video is relevant for normal times, at least the prices. Experts think the shortage is over by early 2022 or earlier.
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide Thank you so much! I got lucky and scored the last car on a local website just right now. Saved at least 800! Thank you and God Bless 😊
Hi, I’ve been watching a few of your videos for the last week. I’m heading to Kauai in October and wondered if you can recommend any independent car rentals on that island. What I have reserved through discount Hawaii car rentals is $1,000 for the week.
When did the train at the airport start operation? I remember the first time we came to Maui there was no terminal they rolled the stairs over to the aircraft. And we have used Kihei Rent a car actually we still have some credit with them hopefully this virus thing will be over soon.
The train and rental car center was opened a few years ago. It must have been something to fly into Kahului back then. Nice to hear you used Kihei Rent a Car, they are wonderful there and celebrating 30 yrs of business this year.
In capitol city where i live, parking is not available, sometimes you cant even pay for it. I assume you can just park anywhere in Maui? and do you drink with these dinners you are driving too?
Great videos, been watching for over a year. Will be in Maui in a week and reserved a car at the airport 9 months ago. Is it a good idea to call them now to make sure they will have our requested car when we get there? Not sure if rental car situation has gotten back to normal.
Aloha James, there are more cars on the islands but prices and demand are increasing as summer approaches. We haven't heard horror stories of reservation issues but give them a call for peace of mind!
This is a great video and awesome tips! I wish I had known this info before I had booked my rental. I booked directly through the Alamo site as it seemed the cheapest for what I needed and gave the option to have the GPS with the rental. I did not know about the tram to the rental counters. Could you please elaborate on this? I fly in from Canada at 9:40pm Hawaii time in June 2021.
I didn't think that April is still technically the busy month. I am struggling finding a good price rental car. I am excited for my trip in the next two week but I exhaust all the resources. Any other options?!?!
If you stay at one of the resorts in Wailea or Lahaina, the math doesn't quite add up as the parking rates can easily be $50/day. If you are doing AirBnb, then this does not apply
Do you have suggestions if to visit Maui or Honolulu first for someone who this will be our first trip to Hawaii? I heard Honolulu is busier... well, escaping LA i want a quieter Island that comes with its beautiful view of nature... any suggestions?
yes, big spike due to car fleets being reduced. Book now but don't pre-pay and watch for prices to hopefully decrease. thehawaiivacationguide.com/discount-car-rental Or car local rental car companies!
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide Awesome! Thank you guys, I enjoy the informative videos you guys post. Helps out a lot with the Xmas vacation to Maui in a couple of weeks.
It can be tough. We owned an electric car and the public charging was out of service a lot. If you have a charger at your resort, you can make it work.
Prices change with demand and go way up during the holidays. Book a car in case they sell out and then watch for price changes. Use Discount Hawaii Car Rental so you don't pay up front or call local companies for prices.
Do you guys travel from mainland and back with your dog? My dog (Brody) use to live on Maui with me, but he permanently resides on the mainland in California. I wanna get him to travel with me? Any help?? He’s already been through the dog quarantine once before he moved there
Hello guys. I want to fly this April from Seattle to Honolulu i want to know if i still have to do the Covid Testing and if there is any ferry-boat between Oahu and Big Island and if no, from where i can buy a ticket for a plane between islands? Thank you!
Yes, the pre-testing travel program is still expected to be required to avoid the 10-day quarantine. There are only flights available between the islands, look at Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest. You will require another test to go from Oahu to a neighbor island.
Have you completed the rabies requirements to avoid quarantine? I do not believe service dogs are excluded. We have a video on the process, if you are interested: th-cam.com/video/PGMyaLgN31I/w-d-xo.html
You really need to mention that if you rent a jeep with the thoughts of going off road, you will void your contact and be charged inflated prices if you get stuck off road.
we don't want to give any one the idea to go off road, it isn't respectful. But yes, we get you! There is a big cost risk if you go off road and get stuck.
I'm planning on staying on Maui for about six days, in the Ka'anapali area. I would like to just rent a car for one or two days, mainly to do the Road to Hana, and then spend the rest of the time near/around the hotel/resort. Is there any reason why I would need a rental car for more than that?
You can have a great trip with that plan. Take Uber or the free shuttle to Lahaina for extra things to do. You can also take Uber to other beaches in the area but you will have plenty of beach and relax time around Kaanapali. Kaanapali is the best place to stay without a car on Maui, in our opinion.
I'm trying to book a trip in August, and oh jeez the car rentals here are expensive. Over 100 dollars per day seems to be the norm for a pretty average car :/
Great video!! We booked a pretty sweet vacation package with travelocity that included a car from hertz, are there any hidden charges we should be aware of?
Definitely use discount Hawaii car rental! We use that everytime visiting the islands.
Last month our Jeep rental was $190 for the entire week! Definitely scored ☺️
I always use discount Hawaii car rental as well. I book a car then look every week or so to see if there’s a cheaper rate.
chad pharis me too! Lol I think I probably made 20 reservations with them up to my trip last month
How did you get it for $190? Just looking for our trip now, and it's $500+
Gretchen Genrich hello, I would just always double check the pricing. The good thing about discount Hawaii car rental was that the payment wasn’t due until you were getting your car
where did you book from, like what island?
Just got back from a trip to Maui. We used Turo and it was unbelievably clutch for us. Much cheaper than most of the sky-high rental car options we saw, and ubers/lyfts were pretty much non-existent in many places. We definitely would have struggled to do many of the things we wanted to do without a car. For anyone planning a trip to Maui soon check out Turo!
Thanks for sharing!
Ok wow! This comment right here!
i"m glad you wrote about Turo. I am going to Maui in June and we had decided not to rent a car because they were just too expensive. Then somehow I happened on to Turo. That is who we will use in June.
same for me 100% turo was the best option. Saved money and got a better vehicle.
Wonderful and informative video. So helpful, thanks!

Just booked last week for 15 days in June with AVIS for a Mazda CX-5. Total rental cost is $1,000. Discount Hawaii Rental was $2300!
Is that the Avis pay now price? Discount Hawaii Car Rental is still cheaper for the no pre-payment price per our research. Thanks for watching!

Use kimo’s car rental. We used them for two weeks and it was less than one week from any other place. Used the “newer” option which was a 2015 I believe ... rav 4. Car was perfect. Unless you need a flashy vehicle they are the best! Great memories
Thanks for sharing a local place
Thanks for this. Cheapest rental currently $1500 for my stay… I ALWAYS rent a car but considering Uber and bus for my stay next week…!
Good idea! Try something different during this time of the great rental car shortage
You should update this as now-because of COVID and Hawaii now opening up-prices for rentals have changed dramatically.
we provide updates via our bi-weekly newsletter and short videos. the rental car crises should end by early 2022.
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide the rental crisis did not end lol. $700 a week for an economy in July.
11:37 New Jersey license plate on that white Ford Transit Van, how did it get to Maui?
It’s fun to spot out of state license plates on the islands. We saw a vintage woody that made the drive over to Lana’i from California yesterday.
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide Yeah when I was in Oahu in 2005 I did notice some mainland license plates. Is it because they shipped their car over or did they just buy a car new in Hawaii with their mainland registration?
@@Scambush The mainland plates are from shipping their car over and they haven't registered yet in Hawaii, probably a 30-day grace period.
Costco, Costco, Costco!!! They are the way to go for car rentals....renting a premium class car 3/31/21-4/12/21 and total cost is $460, free cancellation and you don’t actually get charged until you return the car. The key is to book as early as possible and then periodically check prices as they drop rebook and cancel the original, rinse and repeat.
just checked they want 2500 for 2 weeks, a week after you
@@CVCC yep I don’t doubt it, even my rental would be $2000 if I was booking now, but if I was going in Sep it would be $900. Like I said, the key is to book as early as you can if you see any kind of decent price and then as time goes on the price will drop so then rebook and cancel your original, do that as often as you want/need to to get the best price...yeah it’s sometimes a bit of a pain but it doesn’t cost anything except a little time.
Parking at resorts is above $40/day, so no brainer. I'm taking shuttle buses and Ubers.
Costco car rental is good too
Good point! We just booked our rental car in Oahu with Costco as they were cheaper than Discount Hawaii Car Rental this time.
Would be great to update this for the out-of-control rate situation of 2021.
we provide short videos on updates on the rental car situation. the video is relevant for normal times, at least the prices. Experts think the shortage is over by early 2022 or earlier.
i am currently struggling to find a rental car atm. prices are at least 200 each day. any advice you can give?
Contact the small local agencies. Call them. If they are booked they can direct you to other small rental car agencies that might have availability
Looked at discount Hawaii car rental and they were almost 200 - 300 per week more than anyone else for a standard Jeep
Always good to price check!
Could you make a video on parking in Oahu? Where you should/shouldn’t park, parking prices, free parking areas?
In capitol city where i live, parking is not available, sometimes you cant even pay for it. I assume you can just park anywhere in Maui? and do you drink with these dinners you are driving too?
there are public parking lots and parking at restaurants. Most public parking lots have a fee.
Idk where you get these numbers. Looks like a grand or more for a rental for a weak.
Just booked.. It's $130 in July!
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you , so helpful 👍
Do you have to have a major credit card for car rentals !? I just have a debit card and cash in hand usually.
Yes, they need it for the deposit on the car in my experience. Trying calling to see if their policy changed.
Gotta have a car. The bus service although impressive for an island and valuable for a retiree just doesn’t have good frequency. Forget ride sharing .
Thanks for watching! The electric tram is a green train outside of baggage claim. Two cars. You can’t miss it and it runs late.
I heard Honolulu is busier... well, escaping LA i want a quieter Island that comes with its beautiful view of nature... any suggestions?
check out one of our first videos on that question! th-cam.com/video/niOXH1AgJ2s/w-d-xo.html
We are planning for june and the rental prices are looking something like 1000 dollars a week!
yes, big spike due to car fleets being reduced. Book now but don't pre-pay and watch for prices to hopefully decrease. thehawaiivacationguide.com/discount-car-rental Or car local rental car companies!
Is the rental fee the total price, or is there hidden fee's from the Discount Hawaiian Car Rental ?
We've never had any hidden fees. The total they give is the total you pay!
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide Awesome! Thank you guys, I enjoy the informative videos you guys post. Helps out a lot with the Xmas vacation to Maui in a couple of weeks.
Priceline had good deals. But whatever you do don't rent a Tesla trying to charge is a nightmare.
It can be tough. We owned an electric car and the public charging was out of service a lot. If you have a charger at your resort, you can make it work.
I'm looking at rental cars from the airport from all the major brands, it's 1,000 or more per week. where do you get 350?
Prices change with demand and go way up during the holidays. Book a car in case they sell out and then watch for price changes. Use Discount Hawaii Car Rental so you don't pay up front or call local companies for prices.
Do you guys travel from mainland and back with your dog? My dog (Brody) use to live on Maui with me, but he permanently resides on the mainland in California. I wanna get him to travel with me? Any help?? He’s already been through the dog quarantine once before he moved there
thanks for the question, watch our video on how to avoid pet quarantine: th-cam.com/video/PGMyaLgN31I/w-d-xo.html
definitivamente el video que necesitaba mirar. mil gracias.
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide thank you so much
Im 18 years old can I rent one? I have a California License
Great stuff! Btw how is it traveling during pandemic? Do they check negative tests at airport? Any quarantine restrictions?
Watch our videos on how to do the pre travel testing program. A negative test is required before you depart.
I saw that you have a dog in this video, I will be bring my service dog do you have any suggestions what to do with my service dog?
Have you completed the rabies requirements to avoid quarantine? I do not believe service dogs are excluded. We have a video on the process, if you are interested: th-cam.com/video/PGMyaLgN31I/w-d-xo.html
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide Just getting started but our trip is in November. I did watch your super helpful video on the process.
I just looked and the cheapest is $300 per day ! I had to cancel my trip to Maui it’s insane
Great video!! We booked a pretty sweet vacation package with travelocity that included a car from hertz, are there any hidden charges we should be aware of?
I'm not familiar with the vacation package so can't say, read the fine print?
