As a metalhead I can say that I had a similar response to this song. I cannot stop listening to this song. It’s different than my usual tastes but also… not. Like the elements are there in a different order. I love the blend of goth/industrial and metal but this is done in such a unique way, and her vocals verge on classical. That gives it a very different edge, and I even love her lighter stuff so far. I love how it becomes a different song at the screen, almost like an intro to a black metal album or something. It’s about an abuser finding her and she narrowly gets away (the distorted vocals at the end say ‘you can’t run forever’ implying she gets away). The name is from Dante’s Inferno. It’s the realm for traitors. A lover betrayed her by trying to unalive her, in this song. It feels like it needs to be in a horror movie. Definitely watch a lyric video. You hear them really clearly when you can read them. It’s wild.
She doesn’t actually get away. She is so high on drugs that her “lover” and abuser has been feeding her and is basically hallucinating the whole time. The prayer at the end I think of Death itself coming for her as she is unalived by her abuser, Isaiah. Hence the lyrics “blessed be you girl, promised to me by a man (Isaiah) who can only feel hatred and contempt towards you.”… The next song on the album goes right into her actually dying and rotting away. Not saying your take is completely wrong but this is what I’ve gathered from Ethel’s Genius account and lyric breakdown.
This is the kind of album that reminds me of being a kid in my room, listening to a CD with the little booklet completely consumed in reading the lyrics. The album tells a story in every way possible, it takes you on a journey. Whether you document it or not, I def recommend a beginning to end listen of the album. Ethel Cain often comments with explanations to her lyrics from her verified account on Genius. Cool channel and review btw! :)
10/10 recommend doing the full album. Its phenomenal. Plays like a movie and it has a super consistent storyline - i like to jokingly call it inverted metal; youll see why xD
Thanks for the reaction! It will be awesome if you react to the whole album reading along Genius cause it adds a great story to the album that will shock you

Thank you and I'll deff consider a full album listen.
You gotta do it! The story is incredible
The whole “make it stop” buildup is very tense and then that scream… so good
