Years ago I drove out to a former coworker's home out of Rogue River, Oregon. I lent him money and was there to get some back. In the way I saw a sign on the road, "black walnut 1.50 bd ft. I almost wrecked being in woodworking as a profession. So returning I saw a barn FULL. I asked the guy how did you get so much? He pointed over to an old truck. I could k no it believe it just a 3/4 ton. He was a tree service guy removing them, sawed them up about 8ft from 2/4 to 24/4! The wood was just beautiful different from back east. There were more lighter shades of brown. I still own some 24" wide 3/4 planks and others. In high school I made my mom a walnut and maple cutting board 2" thick a heavy one. She cried when I gave it to her...1975? Or around there. I appreciate good work and you certainly did provide your customer with a very nice piece.

That the perfect way to do it as you said the resin was to be a solid colour it looks fantastic and from a users poin't i think they wouldn't care they would care as long as it looked great

Is there a reason you sand it that high? I am watching a lot of woodworkers and most of them say don't do more than 220 otherwise the cracks are filled wits dust and the surface won't take the finish you need to apply.
I sand it high because I love how the grain continues to refine and reveal itself as I go higher. I usually go through grits until I see no substantial difference in the grain between two consecutive water pops. And yes they are right. Between each grit I use high pressure air to clean the pores, give it a water pop and wipe it thoroughly clean with micro fibre cloths closely inspecting the dust and pores. This adds a considerable effort though. And once I cross 600, in addition to the above, I also give it a good wipe with a tack cloth and then a mineral spirit wipe and then apply finish. But I wouldn't do this for every project.
Sorry, I lost you here. Care to share your reasons for why or how "These boards have straight grain which doesn't even make sense."? Every table would have an edge, live or not. Are you saying that we should not sculpt an edge? The edges on this table are stunning. I have to admit, in my opinion, they look better than a live edge because these edges do not have the sapwood.
Curious what does the can of osmo recommend sanding to before applying it? I haven’t seen too many people go over 220 when applying a finish like that. Table came out awesome. Good work.
TBH I never read the can and I have used various Osmo finishes several times lol. Just now though I checked the can because you asked and it mentions nothing grit related. I can tell you from my experience though that 800 is too high and the wood will struggle taking it. I havent had any problems at 320 or 400. And thank you… means a lot that you like the table.
Those hard wax finishes recommend 120-180, ideally 150. The way they are designed to work. They need to be able to penetrate the wood to properly chemically bond with the wood fibers. Too high of a grit would basically burnish the wood and prevent it from seeping in. BUT I’ve seen every builder on TH-cam go against manufacturers recommendations and get amazing results… For example, Rubio Monacoat… Who actually puts on one single coat? Amazing video by the way! Love the build and definitely the commentary to go with it. You’ve got a unique way of going deep on your thought process and explaining it. Awesome stuff man! Keep it up, would love to see more.

I don't understand how you think it's more sustainable considering? Most live edge slabs are salvaged wood that would have been thrown in a land fill or burned. Also a lot of them are rotted out trees that are so damaged they couldn't be used without being held together with epoxy.

How is it that for millions of years the Earth and its forests were healthy and thriving without needing us to "salvage" anything? Why do we need to throw or burn any of it? The forests didn't need managers, they managed just fine. People are willing to pay eye-watering prices for these slabs even though according to you "a lot of them are rotted out trees that are so damaged they couldn't be used without being held together with epoxy". Lets admit it, there is a demand for large slabs. People can make an exorbitant amount of money. And this is why there exists so much "salvaged" wood out there. Finally, to answer your question, and perhaps you missed it in the video, it is "more sustainable" to maintain our supply of Walnut wood if we use 6 inch boards. This is because we can reasonably sustain the planting and then harvesting of Walnut trees approx. 50 to 60 years. As opposed to approx. 250 to 350 year cycles. And, if you haven't please subscribe. I am new to TH-cam and it is viewers like you who can afford me the opportunity to learn by taking the time to share our thoughts with each other.

Live edge looks good because the grain flows with it. These boards have straight grain which doesn't even make sense.
