These children... These children MAKE this episode.. I know everyone in this series and I appreciate them all. But I don't appreciate anything more than I do the enthusiasm from these young kids.
One of the mini existential thoughts I have about retro games is "50+ years from now, will people even care about retro games when our generation is old?" Seeing the enjoyment these kids are having is a good reminder that a fun game is a fun game no matter how old.
I may be wrong, but all the times I’ve watched this, I’ve always felt there was something off about it. It makes me think it was either scripted or that the kids were saying what they thought they wanted to hear. Again, I may be wrong.
[Try4ce] Very much the core theme of this. I got back into NES in the late '90s when I realized I missed SO MANY games for it. And to this day, the greatest joy for me in retro gaming is discovering "new to me" favorites on old systems. I really wanted to push back against the prevailing notion that it's all about nostalgia.
Absolutely, it's so good remembering game's from the past that we never got to play or complete and finding them and playing them. It fills gaps that were once left open and gives you closure in that part of our lives haha.

@@mylifeingaming I was born in 1999 and some of my favorite games are from before that and I have only discovered them in the last few years. It's really not just nostalgia
Specially to be able to play those newly translated games that never left japan are one of the many reasons that make retro gaming fresh and alive after all these years.
@@mylifeingaming That's what it's been like for me with the Sega Saturn. I adored shmups in the arcades way back in the day, and discovering that there are so many great shmups on the system has been a wonder to me, and that doesn't even include classics like the Panzer Dragoon series. I actually discovered Panzer Dragoon way back in 2002 or 2003 with Panzer Dragoon Orta, and that began the journey of discovery for me. I was already familiar with the NES, SNES, and PS1, and so on (I turn 31 this year), but the Saturn always eluded me.
Those kids are just amazing. I bet you could have hours and hours of fun with them and experience old games in a totally new way you haven't thought of in decades

32:00 there should be a small company to make again CRTs. like a high quality device with every wishfull connection on it for the retro community around the world. sure it would not be a company achieving very high selling numbers, but i am sure there would be a small market for it. like make 3 models wich difference is only the sice 20inch 30inch and 40inch or so. it has to have rf, composite, s-video, component, vga, scart and for newer nonsense even hdmi/dp. something similar to philips tvs with pixelplus which really had a high res mask. that would be so great.

27:18 - “They’re loud, noisy, and have this weird squeaking sound.” We’re all getting older in ways that aren’t so obvious. CRTs emit a high frequency sound in the 15700Hz range. While most classic consoles will survive for a very long time, these CRT displays will age and die alongside us. Retro gaming is for everyone, but CRTs belong to our generation.

It is obvious you guys spent a lot of time creating this documentary. Me and my wife spent a lovely evening watching it together and we can't wait for part 2. We loved seeing some of the now familiar faces of the retro community, like Bob! Much appreciate the effort.
I love the fact that Matts children are into retro gaming. When I tried to explain to my class how retro gaming was at the very least on par with modern games, I was humiliated for it, so it’s nice to see that some other people enjoy it as well.
I feel like I’ve just watched yet another series off of a premium paid network; this is absolutely astounding work. Know this channel already gets massive respect within retro gaming TH-camr circles and has a strongly dedicated viewership, but really feel like this channel is going to EXPLODE within the general public soon. This is not only a good retro gaming documentary; the production quality in writing and shots make this (and the other videos on this channel) a great documentary in and of itself, which will entice anyone into this subject. Will be gladly sticking around to witness when it happens :)
This documentary series is incredible-required viewing for folks who are new to the scene as well as a great refresher for those who have participated for years! I’m looking forward to the next episode!
This is what I'm talking about. This right here...quality. Just quality. A fine mini documentary. My life in gaming is the definitive vintage gaming channel on youtube. Fight me
Kids are the best , I remember one day I was visiting some friends took my ossc, sega megadrive and sonic 2 to have like a retro gaming night. Sadly we never had the change to play because the kids took over.
Now that I’m 35 and married with 1 year old twins. I fully understand not having the time. And when I do have the time I don’t want to play some long ass game that takes hundred hours.
Just don't sleep. I'm pretty sure it's not healthy but Dragon Quest 11 ain't gonna beat itself. Sleep 4 hours wake up get the kid ready for school, feel like a boss for beating Mordegan first time, after going down to one dude and making a huge come back. You'll be too tired to be sad the next day when you realize there's 10+ harder hours left to get the real ending, lol
Have a 5 year old, a 4 year old, and a 1 year old. I just today got my first day without the kids since last October. Do I want to spend my evening watching cutscenes? hell no.
I'm so relieved to know that I'm not the only one who feels that way. It seems like everybody around me is always talking about games that need to be bigger and longer. Personally I would prefer to play a game that is short but is enjoyable enough to make you want to revisit it again rather than playing something that is hundreds of hours long and ends up over staying its welcome.
This kind of content is why I watch TH-cam videos and online content instead of broadcast TV. This is better than I see on TV networks. Seriously. Keep up the truly amazing content. It is GREATLY appreciated.
Those little kiddos put a real tear to my eyes -- I can no longer sit around and take what I retro tech I have obtained over the years for granted. Not when there are such bright children completely enjoying things they way they do. Was wonderful to hear his opinion on something that predates not only him, but also his pops. Not only is it a reminder that games are "more than nostalgia" but also the fact that even among the older stuff, there is still much to discover and love.
26:03 "The first time I got my Atari, I lov-- I was just pl-- I just played Dig Dug all the time." How have I reincarnated in that kid without dying first?
It's staggering that something this high quality is on TH-cam. I would also add that I appreciate you using such a huge variety of games in your gameplay footage and shots of cartridges. Love seeing Lufia and Harvest Moon for SNES. Makes the video much more interesting.
Great video! I hope in part 2 we see emulation developer like byuu and their work. Because as good and important those hardware modifications are... future generations won't have the hardware anymore. We should focus more and more towards emulation. The more people get into this, the more bugs are found that can be fixed eventually. Just with emulation we can preserve gaming history.
You guys knocked it out of the park on this vid! I spent today with a friend saving an old Sony Trinitron from the dump and trying to get the picture configured correctly, but we had a great time doing it. All worth it to see how beautiful that Sega Saturn displayed when we finally got it set up!
I never, ever in my life ever thought I would hear someone not even in high school yet (I'm assuming) would even know what a Fairchild Channel F is, let alone want to own one.
I never comment, but man I have to now. The detail in this video/their videos not one youtuber goes this deep into the questions most of gamers are thinking. You can just see the passion in the content. Growing up with most of these games myself and now a collector it's great to get all this information on how I can get the best out of my games and systems. Would also like to say to the people keeping the retro gaming alive for future generations, you're doing more than most of these larger gaming companies Microsoft, sony, and even Nintendo. Keep up the great work and I shut up and give you my money while these great products come out from real true gaming fans that just get it and are not about just making a quick buck.
"Nostalgia is a great force in the videogame industry" I'd say in most of the entertainment industry. Specially in Hollywood, but that one is completely creatively bankrupt already.
Unlike the Video Game Industry though, Nostalgia based movie releases tend to both damage a property and kill any chance the series had going forward. We all can think of some recent examples. I won't name any, but we all know the many dead horses that Disney likes to beat till people loathe the things they once loved.
There is no single more significant driver in all of our personal tastes than nostalgia. If anything, nostalgia is grossly underplayed across the board.
Bob, from RetroRGB was who introduced me to this Retro RGB and Component World. I currently own many HD Retrovision component cables, Retro Gaming Cables SCART cables, an OSSC, and GARO vga converter, and aiming to have a RetroTINK board this year. He is a great man. Thanks MLIG for this video!
[Try4ce] Don't worry, that is still our main theme for our regular episodes! But the theme for Analog Frontiers is composed by the same person, Matt McCheskey!
Every time i see a My Life In Gaming video it inspires me even more to play, mod, buy, read and loose myself in retro goodness!!! Excellent video keep 'em coming!!!
Hopefully this series has a part on emulation and the amazing geniuses behind that scene. Those are the unsung heroes of retro gaming and a big part of its popularity today.
Jeremy Parish from Retronauts was a awesome surprise love that podcast i can sit and listen them for hours and get lost in nostalgia. You guys outdid yourselves with this one! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
As someone who only got into this scene in the last few years, it's fascinating to see the path that led us to where we are now and the folks who made it happen. Doesn't hurt that the production quality here is just off the charts. Thank you to everyone involved.
I'm too young to remember most of these systems, the oldest console I owned when I was young was a ps1 so for me nostalgia doesn't come into it for most games.
To be honest this section of Game Tech / Jason talking about people thinking he's rich, living within his (debt free) means and Doing it all while foregoing heath cover felt a bit misplaced.
@@Fattydeposit true, but it still sucks that it's implied that you need a corporate job to get standard non‐debt inducing health care. This man has lived in fear his whole life of debt, trying to do everything right and pay everything off. An ambulance alone in the US goes over 1000$ easily. Meanwhile our politicians can't even balance the national debt while here we are debating whether or not we can afford to go to the ER. It's shameful and almost every other developed country has already figured this out.
So glad to see a large audience channel talking about classic gaming with the consideration it deserves (without the limited nostalgia focus). I love retrogaming for the timeless qualities of the games. Nostalgia is subjective, and excluding for younger audiance + those who have not known the titles. I think that classic gaming would benefit from a larger range of consideration. Thank you My Life in Gaming !
People had to wait about a year, with their questions and comments being either blocked or totally ignored, only to have all the adaptors show up all at once with no warning one morning and sell out within an hour at a higher price then originally planned. One batch only going to be made, all sold out within 45mins, lots including me didn't even have a chance to wake up, Analogue charges a sweet premium for their consoles promising backwards compatibility then doesn't deliver and moves on to the next project with no intentions of finishing the last project people paid for 100% then gaming channels do nothing but hype them up with everyone and the cycle continues. PEOPLE BUYING THE ANALOGUE POCKET BE WARNED THAT THOSE ADAPTORS YOU WERE PROMISED, YOU WON'T GET THEM.
Not to mention the shipping is not far off from the premium price of the console itself. I've ordered things overseas from Japan and Europe before with FREE SHIPPING. Let that sink in. I'm sure that shipping $$ partially goes into Analogue's bank account which is another crime that needs to be addressed in itself..
Great video! It gives me a sense of pride in the 8 years I spent modding game consoles and making emulation easy and accessible to many many people. It's been 9 years since I retired my tiny mod shop and the emulation bug never really left me. Specially with retropie and classic systems blowing up. The controller and adapter scene is like heaven these days too!
This kind of content inspires me. With so much random tech and so many games I've gotten from my parents, family members, friends and purchased myself, I've sometimes wondered if it was justifiable that so much money could be wasted on stuff that I might never use like my wii rockband stuff or maybe not touch again after beating them. This reminds me that this hobby fulfills me as a person who loves nostalgia, game preservation/history and amazing new discoveries always coming up. Modern gaming honestly makes me sad because despite so much money being poured in, the industry itself has lost the heart it used to have when people were still figuring out how everything worked. It's a comfort in my life to speedrun the games I played as a child and games are what makes me happy, even if they're just in a box or on my shelf. It's a piece of my own history I get to carry with me. So thank you.
I remember, as a teen in the 90s, seeking out classic rock music like Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, etc and knowing that it was great even though I wasn't alive when it came out. I think retro gaming is the same. There's something special about classical music, literature, films, etc and everyone recognizes this. I have no doubts that gaming will be valued in that same way for generations
one of the best videos of one of the best youtube channels. Every gamer should watch this. I personally already had my nostalgia fix. Ive already played all the games of my childhood. But I still choose to play vintage games. They are straight to the point. They are true works of art. They are worth it.
My god those kids reminded me of when I was 9, waking up early on weekends to go jump on my Wii and pump hours into my steadily growing Virtual Console collection. It's amazing to see how far I've personally come and see others go on that beautiful journey I started when playing Mappy at the young age of 3. It's emotional like nothing else.
MY FAVORITE MLiG series hands down! Great video production. Amazing job balancing your normal lives and your lives in gaming to be able to provide this type of content!
Oh wow. I just wanted to say, this was truly a great watch. I think there's so many of us out there who kept our old gear (which for me was both my Atari 2600 & Commodore 64), digging it out - but also just expanding upon stuff we experienced, or heard about or more. There's so many factors as to what makes these games enjoyable. Thank the makers of all the upscaling, flash kit and more for all of us who can run real hardware too. Genuinely excited for the rest of the series!
Thank you for this video, I especially enjoyed the interviews with the children. I have a 10-year-old my self who is always begging me to show him the classics and perspective of their importance to me.
25:05 I love how his answer is so respectful and free of any dismissive or backhandedness. "Original graphics" what a great way to put it rather than throwback, old school or even 16-bit.
Excellent documentary, guys--you really are masters of your craft! Funny enough, just the other week I was thinking of a time when you teased photos from the RetroUSB part of this video and I was wondering when they would be featured. Here they are now!
Well, now I wanna hear more music by Matt McCheskey and Ser Flash. And you guys are crazy good with production quality! I was planning on watching like 10 minutes and then saving the rest for later to go do things, but I ended up just sitting and watching the whole thing through.
Wow. I did not want this to end. So thankful you made this and putting all the people who are all astonishing in their own right into this. I feel we owe them for forging the way to be impressed with an artform and entertainment source for many more years that may have gotten left in the closet. Thanks.

This is what I'm talking about. This right here...quality. Just quality. A fine mini documentary. My life in gaming is the definitive vintage gaming channel on youtube. Fight me
Can’t wait to get through this. Thanks for all the hard work!
Not to mention the time it takes to get into the actual game in the first place! Can be very discouraging.
I hear you brother
This video can be considered as "TH-cam gold". A video with such high quality that everyone should see it :)
26:03 "The first time I got my Atari, I lov-- I was just pl-- I just played Dig Dug all the time."
How have I reincarnated in that kid without dying first?
there's a pooka in all of our hearts
@@Doritomurderer if your heart feels like a pooka, you might wanna get that checked out LOL
@@Doritomurderer Why does this make me laugh so hard LOL
Loved every minute Of this! This must be how football lovers feel about watching the Super Bowl
Excellent storytelling and editing- this channel is just non-stop quality programming. I hope many people see this documentary series.
I never, ever in my life ever thought I would hear someone not even in high school yet (I'm assuming) would even know what a Fairchild Channel F is, let alone want to own one.
This kid is barely into middle school
12:39 Jeremy and his Gin haha. This is fantastic guys!
The production quality of this is unreal. Great episode, as always.
"Nostalgia is a great force in the videogame industry"
I'd say in most of the entertainment industry.
Specially in Hollywood, but that one is completely creatively bankrupt already.
When I see Groundhog Day being used to sell Jeeps, I know that our generation (80s-90s) has been fully milked to death.
@@justsomecat Sure whatever you say.
@@justsomecat How bout the 2019 remake of *The Lion King*
Bob, from RetroRGB was who introduced me to this Retro RGB and Component World. I currently own many HD Retrovision component cables, Retro Gaming Cables SCART cables, an OSSC, and GARO vga converter, and aiming to have a RetroTINK board this year. He is a great man. Thanks MLIG for this video!
please come back with the theme song of the old videos, it is chilling !!!
[Try4ce] Don't worry, that is still our main theme for our regular episodes! But the theme for Analog Frontiers is composed by the same person, Matt McCheskey!
@@mylifeingaming for what it's worth I massively enjoyed the tune in this episode.

Bob is criminally under-subscribed.
A "like" doesn't do justice to how I feel about this video and project. Tremendous job, can't wait for the next episodes!
"I don't sign up for this"
Ok, that kid is a reincarnated person I'm sure.
Give it 8-10 years. You will feel it, and it will wreck you... in a good way =)
Just blown away by the quality of everything. Shots, editing, voice over. (in a jealous way) can't wait for the next parts!
Shoutouts to the ModFather, Jose Cruz
This video didn't feel like a 45 minute video. Excellent production values!
Can't wait to see part 2.
5:12 sounds like someone needs to feel the bern
I wish some channel with a voice would confront Analogue with how they handled the Mega SG adaptors, it's sad everyone keeps praising them
What happened? I never heard of this.
Same. What happened with Mega SG adapters?
My Life in Gaming if your listening, look into it, might snuff out a small gaming scam if you can shed light on this
Great video!
This was incredible guys! You continue to surprise and entertain the absolute hell out of me!
You guys do such incredible work on this channel. Seriously. The most high quality gaming content on TH-cam hands down
This is really well made, and the people featured well deserve the recognition.
This is the best documentary on the subject. It also may be the only documentary of it's type but it's VERY good.
Insane production value, I don't know how you guys have the time to put out so many documentary quality videos but thank you for doing so.
[Try4ce] We don't have time to do it, but for better or worse we make it happen anyway!
WOW. This seems to have been well worth the wait!!
You guys really became a pillar of the retro community. Thank you
I remember, as a teen in the 90s, seeking out classic rock music like Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, etc and knowing that it was great even though I wasn't alive when it came out. I think retro gaming is the same. There's something special about classical music, literature, films, etc and everyone recognizes this. I have no doubts that gaming will be valued in that same way for generations
Can't wait for episode 2! :D Amazing edit, video and guests, as always :) hugs from Romania :) 10/10
one of the best videos of one of the best youtube channels. Every gamer should watch this.
I personally already had my nostalgia fix. Ive already played all the games of my childhood. But I still choose to play vintage games. They are straight to the point. They are true works of art. They are worth it.
This series is amazing. Please make a thousand more of these.
Wow, one of the best gaming documentaries EVER. Period!
Man, this is awesome, Kudos for Coury & Marc
This is an absolute must watch.
You gave me so many new TH-cam channels to watch that I didn't even know existed!!!! THANKS!!!
This is a love letter to retro gaming. Always sorprise me the excellent quality content of the channel. Greetings from Argentina!
This has been my favorite piece of media i have consumed all year. Great work
This some of the best content on videogames I have ever seen on any medium. Amazing job man.
Well, happy valentine's day everyone. What a surprise to see such a great present in my TH-cam feed today. Thank you MLiG, great work as always.
Phenomenal. This channel just keeps getting better and better!
Thanks.
[Try4ce] Thank you! It doesn't have to end, Part 2 released on Friday and there will be 5 parts total! th-cam.com/video/X04_D1k9Ybs/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for taking such an in depth and thorough look at the retro game scene today, so looking forward to future minidocs!
I know I say it every time you guys upload a video, but hell yes. Sitting down uninterrupted in the library to watch, this is gonna be good.
