True. In our band we searched for a real good drummer with will to create music for like 2 years. Now that we already released an EP and are releasing an Record, its clear that we already created an irreplaceable link between each others. Its so weird how a band is still alive without atleast one of the founders of that initial dream

Having Opeth on here is a stretch. Any recording of their music has Mikael as the lead vocalist. You can probably argue the band we refer to as "Opeth" did not exist until Mikael was the lead vocalist.
Same with Sepultura. Every record has Paulo Jr. as bassist

I think bands do have souls, but they also evolve, and sometimes we just can't blame the changing of members for the difference in the music.
Some will maintain their sound, most won't, original members or not.
Take Metallica for example, the core of the band is still there, same guys except for bassist, but you listen to the first and last albums and see the clear difference.

On the other side, when we talk about mutilation, it's used to talk about animals as much as (if not more) humans. And cattle decapitation is all about misanthropy and animal supremacy, so you get the idea...
Cattle decap is all original though Travis has been in their since '99 with the Human Jerky album which was their debut

Technically Michael Bishop is an original member of Gwar. it's just he was originally Beefcake the Mighty (the bass player), and now he's his own character Blothar as the singer

Åkerfeldt has been in Opeth since the first lineup. He only played guitar at first, but he still is an original member.
+nmlss Opeth actually existed for a short while before Akerfeldt was invited to be the band's bass player. Opeth already had a bass player at the time, so everyone got pissed off which led to David Isberg firing them all and continuing on with Mikael.

About Quiet Riot and Sepultura:
Quiet Riot’s drummer Frankie Banali joined the band almost right after it was formed, after they had a falling out with their first drummer Drew Forsyth. Banali has appeared on every album except their first.
Paulo Jr, the bassist for Sepultura, joined the band less than a year after its formation and has appeared on all their albums. Lead guitarist Andreas Kisser has appeared on all their albums except their first, so I consider both as almost-originals.
EDIT: Frankie Banali has just passed away, so Quiet Riot can be included on this list after all.
EDIT AGAIN: Rudy Sarzo, QR's original bassist, has rejoined the band, so they shouldn't be on this list after all.
David Nissim as well as that, their current bass player, Chuck Wright, played on some of the songs on Metal Health and played on the song Metal Health, but left and rejoined an album or 2 later.
Paulo didn’t actually PLAY on any recordings until after Max left.

Nate Gilkerson maybe but Eloy Casagrande is such a beast, a great replacement for Iggor. Also, the Cavalera brothers leaving gave us the Cavalera Conspiracy. What I’m saying is that all the great musicians in the band got replaced by other great musicians

I've seen them twice in the last year. One of those times was in a very small venue and they sounded fucking incredible. Cattle is not a big stage band , they are best in intimate settings with no meat monkeys guarding the stage.

Can't have in flames on this list as prior to their 3rd studio album they were never a full band and were constantly using stand in session musicians. So Anders and Bjorn are the two original members.

Anders went to in flames and Mikael as DT singer was the best thing happened to both bands to my opinion

Or sometimes, the band truly didn't exist until all of the original members left. Opeth was known as a joke before the last original member left and Akerfeldt took charge of the band and recorded their debut.
To clear things up, Akerfeldt joined Opeth and then over half of the band left
Travis Ryan from cattle decap cracks me up in the sense that he just doesn't look like he would sing like he does. When he tells people that he's a singer and they look him up by name I guarantee they aren't expecting what they would hear, unless he told them the band name that is.
He's also the original singer so they don't fit the subject of the video

Akerfeldt was recruited to play bass, but soon after that everyone else except Isberg left to form a new group. When Isberg left a few years later, Mikael switched to lead vocals, and has sung lead on all of their albums. I would consider that to be an original member. Before the first album is ever recorded, that's all that matters.
He was lead vocalist on all the albums, so I consider him an original member even if he didn't actually form the band. Many bands have lineup changes before their first album is ever released. It is meaningless until that first album is recorded and released.
Mike Bishop is Beefcake the Mighty on the first GWAR album, he is technically a founding member, he left and returned as Blothar after Dave Brockie died.

1. Opeth is my favorite band of all time and I'm glad to see they're number 1. Mikael is Opeth, and it's cool to see you guys did your research when making this.

Misfits (Glenn's neighbor was the first bassist for a month, not Jerry Only)
Thin Lizzy (still perform on occasion, but Brian Downey [original drummer] has left them)
Heart (technically speaking; originally they were the army with a completely different lineup)
Yes (only original member to remain was Chris Squire, who died in 2015)
The Hollies (Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliott didn't join until 1963)

Actually Kisser didn't come to Sepultura until their second record. He replaced Jairo Guedz before the Schizophrenia record. Paulo Jr is the only original member left.
Kisser is not their original lead, their original LEad plays in Sarcofago

The title is misleading, describing these bands as the greatest. On a couples date one Saturday night we were driving through town and saw the billboard showing Quiet Riot tonight at this bar that might hold 200 people maximum, so I volunteered to drop dinner and go watch the show. The girls decided to drop us off and pick us up after the show. It was an awesome show with Kevin Dubrow and Carlos Cavaso playing on the small stage.

+Señor Butterfingers Jesper was the only founding member left by 1997. It was more or less a side project for him, and they didn't have a steady lineup til Colony came out. By the time Jesper quit in 2010, Anders Friden had taken some creative control, and was more interested in making pop metal than melodeath.

I guess that depends on when you think In Flames became a band. If you think they started in mid 1998, I suppose it's more or less the same lineup. If you think they started in 1993, then they weren't even the same lineup by the time their second EP came out, much less Jester Race or Whoracle.

The first two albums didn't have Anders, but the vocalists they had were brought in as session vocalists, not as permanent members. So, technically, Anders is still the original vocalist if you don't count the temporary ones.

I always thought it was interesting in metal and hard rock that it seems like their are more lineup changes than in any other genre.
I think it may be that there are more solo artists in other genres. That’s just my take tho, and I’m sure there’s a whole gaggle of reasons

I wouldn’t include Quiet Riot because their drummer Frankie Banali has appeared on every album. He’s not a founding member but he’s been in the band more or less since the beginning. (he was briefly replaced by a drummer named Bobby Rondinelli in the early 90’s, but Rondinelli only played drums on a few songs from an album that Banali played most of).
For me personally.....the original band starts with the first recorded output to reach the masses (no demos or early garage line-ups) as anything else is poorly documented and can be contested.

Well in case of Opeth the "original band" was just some random group of yongster deathmetallers. When Mikael joined the rest were kicked, and few years later the leader left and Mikael was left alone to form the actual Opeth that started to write the music.

damn, I had no idea about some of these bands. I always thought Gwar was nothing but original members and wouldve had to quit when the singer recently died.
also, I would feel so stupid being in a band without any original members. after the last original member leaves, they should change the name or something
Yeah was quite the opposite with Gwar. Dave Brockie was the only consistent member. There have been around 30 different members in Gwar, easily. So when Dave died, the band did consider breaking up, but ultimately decided that he would have wanted them to continue. The current singer is the 2nd longest term member of the band and he was previously the lead guitarist before Dave died.

You clearly have not read the comments. He didn't start the band with David Isberg, he simply joined after everyone was in place and when the others left he continued with them, taking lead vocals in 92, afte Isberg left.
