  • Augmented reality glasses have been hyped excessively in the last five years. With billions of dollars in investment, the technology has resulted in discouraging returns.
Dr. Barmak Heshmat, former MIT researcher and technology conceiver, explains how the public understanding of AR is flawed and what the fundamental physical limitations are on this technology. He argues that there are still major challenges that need to be addressed before AR can be adopted by the market, and then explains the practical future that is waiting for this technology. Barmak Heshmat is the head of optics at Meta, a silicon valley startup that manufactures augmented reality displays for professional use case. Prior to Meta, Dr. Heshmat was a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for four years where he invented the time-folded optics which allows designing optics in the time dimension. His other works include reading through closed books using THz batch scanning technique and Imaging through complex geometries using time-of-flight cameras. Dr. Heshmat has given invited talks at five TEDx events, and numerous other venues and academic institutions.
He has published 22 journal papers and filed 15 US patents. Some of these papers and inventions have been featured on MIT cover page, BBC, TechCrunch and many other media outlets. Dr. Heshmat is also the founder of the ‘Imaginarium of Technology’ (iMT) which is a technical illustration service company that illustrates future technologies This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. AR is a diamond in the rough. It is even more convenient and versatile than a phone:
    - checking the time without a gesture
    - Easy navigation while driving
    - Live translations of signs in foreign languages
    - Capability of taking pictures or videos
    - Identifying breeds of animals or plant species at glance
    - Infrared vision, or electronic filtering based on environment
    - censoring particular things you don't wish to see
    - Viewing personal holograms or videos privately without it disrupting the view of others
    - Facial recognition
    - Live calculation of formulas or problem solving
    - Live filters, like making everything monochrome, or boosting color for those with colorblindness
There are so many more uses that will be invented by the time the technology is perfected. From AR glasses, then will move to other headwear that projects the image right into your eye or brain directly, without a visible accessory. People think it is wacky science fiction, but even 20 years ago, we could not conceive of the tech found today.

I disagree with so many points here. Firstly, the development of cellular devices is a perfect comparison. Touch screens were not spectacular for years, and mobile networks were slow. furthermore, the phone is development on the computer becoming smaller which also was a long process. Finally, he is clearly biased for the use cases of these devices. He mentioned entertainment and productivity, but not the hundreds of other use cases that are very real - architecture, healthcare, education, etc

This is one of the coolest talks I have ever seen on AR. There are really not many use cases for AR, that's the whole point. Its better to look for the actual applications and all the polishing will be followed soon( Which he called the killer apps ).

"We don't need this, I don't want that" Well DUDE (since it was used so many times), We didn't need the smartphone either. But we have it. What competing tech did the cell phone have? Why Can't AR just be the next step? Are you saying that if you could do EVERYTHING your phone can with a pair of glasses, you wouldn't be in?

Apple glasses will be next year december to march 2022 accdg to Jon Prosser. To be announced this October to march. Possibilities are endless in games like Yu Gi Ohs and like in the Legend of Korra. Even in Schools, AR in learning will be great. Apple is the best right now in AR with their developers. They will probably make fashionable AR glasses first for most people until series 5.
