    It is the 90° corners where the blade is reduced to the tang. These sharp corners are called "Stress Risers". These are well known to greatly weaken steel under dynamic loads. If you go back and look at Wako's X-rays you will see that Mora uses well radiused corners at it's tang transitions.

  • @bartweijs
    @bartweijs ปีที่แล้ว +165

    If you laser cut 90° angeles where your tang begins; you're inviting faillures. The transition from blade to tang should never have a 90° angle in it; it just invites stress faillures. On the other hand; extremely few vietnam-era combat reports mention a USMC combat knife breaking. I've seen the difference between kabar and camillius producing the same knife. I'll take the camillius USMC any day over any kabar. It wasn't designed as a survival/ bushcrafting knife; it was designed as a military knife. You open ammo cans with it; you crack a coconut with it. If it breaks, you ask your buddy to lend you his; untill you ask a new one back at base. These were soldiers' abusing knives. Actually, I find the Cold steel SRK a much better soldiers knife.

    • @therogers4432
      @therogers4432 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yup... ^THIS^
      A sharp 90⁰ angle like that concentrates all the forces into exactly the point where it broke, but if it had just a small radius (like a 3 or 4mm radius, but the bigger the better really...) spanning the inside of that sharp 90⁰ (which could be hidden inside the polymer grip very easily) then these forces would be spread-out over a much larger area/volume of the steel and be absorbed much more easily 😁👍

      The rounded fillet at the tang is a bad design… it is a pinch fillet design, and while that is better than a sharp corner… It’s not as good as a standard fillet, which increases the thickness of the area.
      The tang needs to be about 50-75% wider, and proper fillets.
      I think Spartan Blades actually has a Ka-bar style knife that is built much more rugged.

    • @Bridgercraft
      @Bridgercraft ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's not even just the 90 degree radius. Looks to me like they filed (or machined) in notches there, perhaps as a method of holding the guard close and secure to the ricasso.

  • @kailashblades
    @kailashblades ปีที่แล้ว +3

    There's a lot of comments here about 90 degree corners acting as a stress raiser. As an industrial designer let me pass some comment on things.
    90 degree corners are quite bad as stress raisers but this situation is in fact much much worse. Not only does that area of the tang face the huge change in stiffness and strength as it drops down to the tang, the tang itself has no profile or distal taper that can help bend to distribute stresses. This means that it has to deal with all the bending loads from the blade and the tang of the knife. If this wasn't enough, this tang transition has a notch with a small raised section behind it that helps with keying of the handle during moulding. You might note a similarity of this structure to the little valleys in between blocks of chocolate. In that application they are placed there intentionally to predictably and repeatedly break at the same location with minimal force. And would you look at this! The kabar breaks predictably and repeatedly at the same structure with minimal force.
    @DutchBushcraftKnives if you'd like to discuss issues in tang and blade design for a video let me know.

    I assume the wide blade pressing on the guard is creating a pressure point at what I also assume are water jet cut 90° angles. So with something like batoning each time you hit it, the force on that rat tang is multiplied greatly because the pressure is going directly into that guard and doesn’t allow any flex. As far as the baseball bat test it’s just the weakest point on the knife. They really should offer an alternative design that is full tang straight through the guard and then add a pummel at the end if need be.

    I have a Ka-Bar made by Ka-Bar in the 1980's and an original PAL RH-36 (6 inch Ka-Bar version) made and used during WW 2. Even when the original knife is in pretty rough shape and has been in constant use for around 70 years, I still trust it more than the modern Ka-Bar. There's just something about the original knife that feels and works better. It might be the tool steel they used during the war or the hardening and tempering process or something that is wrong with the modern replicas. I don't know how to describe it, but if you ever get a chance to handle an original vs a modern replica, you will know what I mean.

    This is the reason i went with an Esee 6 instead of a full sized kabar. I had the short kabar, and did some batoning with it successfully, smaller stuff. I wanted a larger knife, and i wanted to go with the kabar for the name and history because i am a US marine, but i chose the esee 6 because the size is similar, and the blade is thicker, along with the full tang design and their warranty provided. I may still get a full sized kabar because i still think its cool. I think the esee 6 will be a much better military use survival knife.

    For years and years here in the USA it’s been common knowledge that the Kbar and the Air Force survival knife have a flawed design. I seen more than one break in to from just throwing the knife trying to get them to stick In a piece of wood. Should have been redesigned years ago

  • @Mr_Obvious
    @Mr_Obvious ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have this same knife. I won't baton with it for the rat tail, at least not with anything but straight grained softer woods.. Magnacut is ht'ed harder, so it's more brittle than 1095. It's fairly tough for a stainless, but as is the case with most steels, the harder it is the better edge retention, but you sacrifice toughness. K390 is the only steel that seems to break that cycle, at least from the ones I have experience with.. It has incredible edge retention, but it's still very tough. It isn't stainless though, so, it's probably not for everyone.

    brace yourselves for "Well, it was never meant to be used like that." from the fan bois. Forget the fact that there are 50-dollar knives that can easily accomplish that task. KA-BARs were designed as cheap easily replaceable knives. Marines the Pacific would go through several in one campaign. My Granddad told me they used to have crates of them dropped off with the rations. They'd use and abuse them and then go get a new one from supply. Same when I served, I had a box of old surplus M7 Bayonets, 20 years ago you could buy them for 15 bucks a piece or 3 for 10 bucks a piece. if you bent it prying open an ammo crate, meh no big loss.

    60-62 target around 61rc. For this specific model. Folders that are smaller may be different but they havent disclosed that information yet as far as i know.

      I think the design flaw is where there is a small gap at the start of the tang to catch the guard. It's a stress point during heat treatment and becomes a very weak point during use.
      no matter the steel though all our USMC knives broke on exactly that spot. Even for nostalgia you can change it in the design as it is hidden unde rthe handle

    It still needs a wider tang, and better designed stress relief fillets at the blade to tang transition.
    It’s an old design, and has been surpassed.
    I think Spartan Blades has a Ka-bar style knife that is made with a full tang and thicker blade.
    I like the aesthetics of the knife style though… I plan on getting a properly rugged version at some point. But I do have knives already that are better survival/camp knives.

    Ill take toughness over edge retention everyday.
    Everyone with basic knife making knowledge knows the reason they cut these blanks then don't round the corners. Coldsteel had this problem with early recon scouts and a few other designs. Unlike other companies they fixed it.
    Its amazing people fall for the steel mark-up.
    I also find it funny a knife for survival doesn't survive.
