  • Vintage images of Bellevue, Washington. When Bellevue Square was a square, McDonalds had golden arches and Barnes and Noble was a bowling alley. Music: Mr. Lucky (Mancini)/Speak Low (Wilde)/Dansero (Hayman, Daniels, Parker)/The Misfits (North) by Eumir Deodato from his cd "Lounge '64". Available on most online music stores. I remember THIS Bellevue , I went to Bellevue high school and went to John Danz Theatre and the Old Bellevue Square the last film I saw at the theatre there was "Foul Play" . I worked at the Bellevue Athletic Club for many years and moved away 23 years ago. I didn't recognise the place when I returned a couple years ago, and alas ,could not afford to live there now, but it was nice, and I hold a lot of nice memories of the place.

This is the closest I can get to visiting my hometown. I barely recognise it today. The few remaining buildings from my time seem out of place, awaiting certain demolition. I feel like a ghost when I go there.

Wow -- This brings back memories. I saw it all except Bellevue High School in 1949. I came to Bellevue as a 10 year old in 1953 and graduated BHS in 1960. After moving around the country and the world I've been back again for a long time. Jim Ladd

Was born the same year Bellevue incorporated (1953). Moved there in 1961. We lived on 99th Street, a block away from Bellevue Square. Most of this video takes me back to my childhood. My sister and I used to ride our bikes around here, imagine that now! My 4th grade birthday was at the John Danz theater (Lawrence of Arabia). Good times!

Nice Video. Your story is very similar to the Wilson sisters, Ann and Nancy of the band Heart, who grew up in the Lake hills area around the same time period. It sounds like you had some good times back then growing up there.

Thanks for the memories! I was born and raised in Bellevue on top of the hill by the high school graduating there in '72. I walked all over this town, knew it like the back my hand. I loved the Bellevue Square, how special it was. Remember: Toys Cafe, Johnson's Grocery, Ibsen's Towing, House of Values, Smitty's Pancakes, Arthur's Bakery,The Milk Barn, Dicks Drive in,the old Boys club and my beloved Bellevue Jr High was still a school and not a city park.We lived in a great era and town, thanks .

Well done. Like so many here it took me back to a world that no longer exists. It would be great to add a picture or two of the Overlake Blueberry Farm to this collection. I'm going to have to watch again to see if I can catch a glimpse of Uncle Harold's or Bell, Book and Candle. I'm BHS 1983 and worked at Belle Lanes and OBF through college. Many thanks!

thank you thank you thank you!! As someone who grew up in Bellevue (and my family is still there) but has lived away for 25 years, this is such a lovely walk down memory lane! I can now show my family Farrells and the John Danz!! Both of which were places we went all the time and hold lots of memories! And the Square! Including the Crab Apple - one of my grandparent's favorite places to eat dinner. Thank you so much!!

Man It's so Surprising to see how much has changed Since then. Now along Main Street there are Skyscrapers and Apartment Complexes being built. Even when I was a kid During the 1990's Bellevue still had a bit of it's small town charm left.
It's always so interesting to see what places looked like before you were born. Heh, now I'm wishing I was in Bellevue in the 1950's to the 1980's. XD

Bellevue used to have a certain innocence and it came out in that video. I had totally forgotten about "Kentucky Beef" which was an off-shoot of KFC. I think Arby's kicked its ass. I do wish there was a picture of the old Milk Barn. People who lived in Bellevue in the 60s should remember that place. But I'm glad Marvel Morgan made it.

    "The Misfits" (Alex North)

@Nikes62 "Heads Up" was the name of that youth center. I think the building is still there. It was an old church, wasn´t it? I most certainly remember the Bellevue Ice Plaza. "Don´t Cook Tonight, Call Chicken Delight!" I think that was on Main Street. The tent covered swimming pool was called Olympic Swim Pool..or something to that effect.. : )

I was born in 1968. My family moved to Bellevue in 1977. My brother graduated from BHS in 1978. He was the voice of KASB that year. I learned how to shoot pool at the Boys Club, after football practice. I remember quite a bit from 1977-1988. Geno's had THE BEST PIZZA!. The Bowling Alley had the best drugs. Metro busses ran like clockwork..And remember the Tiki Carwash, on 8th?.. I stole the totem pole, back in 1988. Woops..

I cant believe folks are using the word "ancestry" with reference to the 80's. Man do I feel old. I was born 1965, and raised in Bellevue. So many memories of streets with no side walks.
Shakeys?... na!, Geno's Pizza was the bomb. It was one of my first jobs. I think I still have my employee shirt somewhere in a box.
Remember the pink dolphin from the John Danz Theater. Or the sound proof child crying room at the back of the theater. What a great place.
I miss old Bellevue. A lot!

I'm replying to a 2 yr. message so not sure if this will get anywhere. Anyways, my thought is to ask the King County Library for help. They have a mobile service for homebound seniors and also check out laptops. While they usually don't check out laptops outside the library, they might make an exception. Internet access can be obtained via tethering to a mobile hotspot. Here's the homebound program:
      www.bellevuelibrary.org/ashomebound.htm
(Watching this as I grew up partly in Bellevue. For a time, the bowling alley was turned into a Barnes and Nobles....not sure if it is still there. Used to spend Friday evenings there since it was opened until midnight.)
