How To Make A DIY Clean Boost Mini Guitar Pedal

  • In this video I share my design for a simple DIY class A fet clean boost pedal. After seeing the JHS Solo Boost pedal, I decided to try and build mine into the same 1590A sized stompbox housing. I decided to call the pedal the "Lemon Squash", since here in Australia Solo Lemon has been a popular soft drink since the 1970's.
    A great technical article about audio design with jfets: sound-au.com/articles/jfet-de...

    in Brazil it is very expensive to buy audio equipment. Your channel makes our dream come true!

    Very good video! I've built myself a couple of boosts using a J201 transistor and just a few components. The board turned out so small, I even installed one in the cavity of my Les Paul. And I engage it using a push/push pot. Hidden, but there where you need it 😁

      Nice one. A single fet buffer/ boost is fine as an onboard pre. I've done that myself many times.

    Really good vid for the build but would’ve liked some more demoing
    I’ve never done through hole and am excited to try this though!

    That's really interesting Rob . I built a very similar jfet boost with 2xj113s . I was interested that you went with 2 stages for the same reasons that i did .

      Thanks Phil. I've noticed the Keeley Katana is similar in this respect as well.

    Just found your channel, loved this video! Can I ask what software are you using for veroboard layout?

    • @RobMods
      @RobMods  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Rudy. For stripboard layouts, I use an old free program called PCB Express. I used to use it years ago when I would etch my own boards, and I've kept using it for simple stuff like this because I have all my custom parts there and I''m very quick with it. Plus for the channel, it has a nice chunky sort of look, if you know what I mean. It is a very outdated programme though.

      Thanks Peter, I'm glad you liked it. This was the first time I've built a pedal in one of these small enclosures. Was a fun project!

      @@RobMods After watching the video I built one using your layout. For the enclosure I use a metal electrical box a little bit wider than the 1590A. It worked perfect for me and sounds amazingly good. Thanks for the project.

    Hi! When I buy my electronic components, are there any things I need to pay attention to (e.g. resistor tolerance, capacitor power, etc.)?

    Hey Rob, any chance you could drop a B.O.M or an online cart for these builds for us locals/beginner's? Great build, great use of the local drink for the name pun

      Link to the project in video description. There you will find the pdf containing layout, schematics and all build information for this and many other projects. Good luck.

    As you have huge exp. with components to sound deal , let me ask : which resistors should i use in , which ewer pedal make , wire , carbon or metal film ? What about tolerance o/o ? Should i avoid Al e . lyte caps in a signal path ? Thanks ! Very interesting clip ! Regards !

      1/4W or 1/2W metal film resistors for sure. A good quality electrolytic is fine for the output coupling cap. Thanks mate. I'm glad you enjoyed my video!

    Hi, very good video. Can you help me? I can't find 2N5484 to buy it. What component I can put to replace this 2N5484 ? Transistor BF410A is able to assemble the pedal without problem ? If you can help me with this I'll gratefull.

      You are right, mouser and digikey both now list these as obsolete. I buy mine from jaycar, but there's also still many ebay sellers.

    Hey rob, canni use it for my bass guitar ?

    • @RobMods
      @RobMods  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I don't see why not. It has a more or less flat response. If your bass is active and you slap a lot you would probably want to optimise the headroom as I talked about.

    I need it in a step by step LAYOUT format ( not schematic) . Do it like B.Y.O.C. amp build plans does theirs
    . I would be grateful and many others would be grateful also..Do that and I will make a donation !
