Vintage Fender Bass Guitar Repair and Set Up (Part 2)
In this video I finish the work on this lovely old Fender Precision Bass from the 1970's. I dress the frets, install a new Switchcraft output jack, completely rewire and test the pickups and electronics, create a bespoke shim for the neck heel, and finally I string and set up the action and intonation.

Gold Anodized Pickguard Quirks
มุมมอง 8154 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this Quick Tech video, I'm fitting a genuine Fender gold anodized pickguard to a 1979 Precision Bass. These aluminum scratch plates date back to 1957 and the first year of Leo Fender's redesigned P bass. They were also used in the 80's and 90's with the popular 57 reissue Precision. Weirdly, their screw hole pattern is different from standard pickguards.

Neck Heel Screws or Threaded Inserts
มุมมอง 1.9K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this Quick Tech video I talk about my approach to using wood screws in Fender style bolt on neck heels. I prefer to coat the threads with thin CA glue, then I also use a small smear of lanolin grease. This is both to lubricate the now harder threads and also to protect the fastener from rust. With these two steps, the screw will always "find" the original thread when you reinsert it, instead...
How To Fit A Guitar Neck And Vinyl Wrap A Pickguard
มุมมอง 1.1K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is an update on my project Jazz Bass. I featured the neck a few weeks ago when I leveled the refretted the fingerboard. This time I'm fitting the neck to the body (more complicated than you think!),, and using black vinyl wrap on the pickguard. I have made a video about this in the past, but I have worked out a few new techniques for doing this.
Goodbye, Trolley of Doom.

How To Refret A Guitar
มุมมอง 1.3K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video I refret my fretboard. It is a Fender P style after-market bass guitar replacement neck. It is Sapele and Wenge timber, with stainless steel fretwire and abalone dot inlays. Since the frets are high quality and in perfect condition I decided to reuse the original fretwire. I have a few unconventional tools and techniques but the frets come out with very little chipping of the fret...

Can anyone help me with some troubleshooting, i've made this as an onboard for my Pbass, following the diagrams its all correct, i've put the P pickup wire directly into the pull pot where it would feed from the blend pot. Im just getting a really quiet kinda distorted farty sound through the bass now, any ideas what might be the issue, could it be the caps?

look up the dan armstrong strat mod - you can generate the N+M in series and B+M in series using a blender pot as well as parallel out of phase N+M and B+M - the best part being you can reuse the tone pot and you can have some variability rather than all or nothing (as when you have a switch) th-cam.com/video/lWF1L7GBYfU/w-d-xo.html

I really like the option of getting maximum top end out of basses & guitars (you can always take it away later) and find less pot load make a noticable differece. A favortie mod I do for Les Pauls is split coils, flip one magnet & wire that PUP out-of-phase, single tone control and a bass cut tone, plus what we call "Blast Thru" from a pull switch on one of the tone controls, which gets rid of everything except the PUPs and selector switch. The Blast Thrut adds a sublte high top end that can be really nice with cleaner tone and gentle chord pick raking or funky stuff. I have a 74 Fender P bass that I installed an additional bridge P pickup into about 45 years ago. . . so it has 2 x orignal era P-Pickups. In a perfect world my P-Bass would be: - No load volume pots on both PUPs for max top end (Love this idea). - Switch to make PUPs go in Series (pull on Neck Volume) which is an amazing sound IMO (I have done this to every passive J Bass I own). - Tone hi-cut (normal) and also a low-cut (bass dump). .hopefully when you pull the tone pot switch it becomes a Bass Dump control. . . . all be done without more than the 3 controls (like a J). Can it be done? This is going to make my head hurt. Am I crazy?

Depends how particular you are in your setup. It’s better long term to learn how to make and maintain these things if you’re after particular slot heights with certain gauges. Everyone’s methods are different and nothing is standardised in this industry. You’re on your own if you’re particular because even if your tolerances are specific, the way you measure them will vary too. Can’t expect someone else to measure and set these things exactly the way you would and god help you if you’re caught with an issue with no one around to take it to

When I opened the case to clean it I voticed a tiny chip. I was pissed and ready to let the buyer know but I thought, screw it I'm trying this. I had already purchased the 480 and had it on hand. I tried it, and Success! No way to tell the difference. It polished up nicely. Thanks!!!!

@robmods How would you wire a JB with the coils in series and still retain hum-canceling properties of the counterwound & opposite-polarity pair of pickups? Series coils boosts low-end so well, sounds much better to me. But I want to still be able to change the blend between neck and bridge pickups and vary overall volume - while retaining the best hum cancellation I can.

I bought a body and neck of a Vintage (brandname) V4 jazz 2007 Sunburst finish. It'd been hacked with a router to make room for pbass pups so in need of wood repair, which after watching your shows Rob I feel confident in doing now, thanks. As I was tyding bits up I noticed a bit of peeling lacquer, so my adhd kicked off and i started peeling, it all came off. Total crap! So now its all natural but with a under varnish type coating. Just show how an instrument that cost about 300 quid in 2007 has a poor finish, wonder if others peel like an orange too. Going to follow your methods, spray it a nice vintage looking cream and see how it looks. Making the pickguard too from a A4 sheet of black acrylic as its missing. That was interesting working out the dimentions from old adverts. Anyways Rob, great show as usual. Keep it up mate. Looking forward to a new one 👍

Active bass battery woes 1) the battery has leaked and corroded the circuit after I left it in for a long time 2) the battery drained when bass was left plugged in amp with power on too long and 3) to solve this problem, I installed a removable battery case . Putting the battery in and out of the case led to the contact wires to the removable case breaking. Bass hasn’t been used for months now 😢

      @RobMods หลายเดือนก่อน

First work out what is going on. Theres lots of questions. Has the stripe moved? Is the glue seam failing? Or is it just a finish issue? It it a modern neck with poly? Or is it a vintage neck with old nitro? The stripe might need regluing. Is it just a feel thing? Or it it visible as well?

@@RobMods Feel and it's visible, albeit quite minor. Like half a millimetre or so, but you can feel it whilst playing, as well as sight it visually. The main suggestions being given, are to be to fill the sunken sections, super glue type glue, then sand flush. And just sand back the risen sections. Super fine grade sandpapers, then polish. Seems plausible? But don't want to make a mess of it!

@Rob Mods enjoy the Wurlitzer electrostatic continuous free reed organ vibrato circuit. The North Suburban Hammond Organ Society did some really good animated tech articles. VIBRATO CIRCUIT EXPLAINED-- first a little info about Hammond tone wheel organ vibrato and simple theory- nshos *DOT* com/HAMMOND8.htm And here is the unique Wurlitzer purely electronic vibrato ( nothing mechanical) nshos *DOT* com/WUR12.htm The Wurlitzer continuous free reed organ was Wurlitzers answer to Hammond's instant attack. Putting all of the reeds in motion at once from the moment the organ was turned on allowed for this instant attack. It required all of the reeds be soundproofed. This Wurlitzer 4600 (in tech article link above) 25 pedal 2 x 61 keys ( and 4410 spinet version) organ introduced in 1954 was also the first ever organ with sustain. Wurlitzer invented the clever bleeder cap + resistor on each and every key for sustain decay on the DC Keyed keyboards ( a common method of all manufactures...except Hammond, the Hammond tone wheel organs aka B3/C3/M3 etc. were never conducive to sustain)
