La vihuela baja un semitono el tercer orden (se puede hacer igual en la guitarra). La guitarra barroca, posterior a la vihuela en popularidad, tenia cinco ordenes (cuerdas dobles): en terminos de afinacion era como una vihuela sin la primera cuerda. Posteriormente se añadió la sexta a la guitarra, quedando la afinación actual.
