Dirt Bike Magazine went out to Glen Helen Raceway to test the Artic Leopard Electric dirt bike. There is an 800(red) and 880(black) model. We tested both and had Carson Brown put it through its paces. If anyone can rough up a bike and push it to its limits, its Carson. We took both bikes on the stadium cross track and offroad loop to see what they could do. Like a lot of the electric motorcycles we have ridden lately.... the Artic Leopard has ride modes, engine braking adjustments, regen braking, speed adjusters, power adjuster, boost mode, and much more. See what Ron Lawson and Carson Brown had to say after their first few hours on these bikes.

I just got my 880. Here’s some more information.
The bike maxes out at 37 kw of power which is equivalent to 51 hp. It currently has the largest battery on the market. 105v 75ah (bigger than the varg)
It’s an enduro bike, not a track bike. It feels very light and nimble (similar to the beta xtrainer) Soft suspension and lower seat height with around 50-70 miles of trail range depending on how you set it up. 300mm of travel. 238lbs
The app has 5 different ride modes with 3 power settings for each. You can customize your power output, top speed, torque, throttle response, throttle curves, battery settings and more. Each setting can be selected from your handlebars.
It’s a killer trail bike and excels in places where the varg may feel like too much.
what is the total weight of the 880 compared with 800?
238lbs fully ready to ride? Can you confirm that? That's amazing!! I want this for my next bike if so, I love lightweight bikes and the ones pushing closer to 300lb are too much for me.

The exposure that Carson Brown is getting right now is well deserved. Doing testing for the media outlets of print and video , and just his skill and style, and the fact he can ride any bike, anywhere, any time !. 😊
We love having Carson hammer down on all our test bikes. If he doesn't break it thats a good sign hahaha
While he is not the fastest person to every toss a leg over an MX bike, he does have a skill set that makes him so unique. It seems that he can ride any bike faster than 95% of riders, and to me it shows that it is often not the bike, but the rider that makes the difference. When the local C class lineup is full of tuned suspension, titanium bits all over, and every performance farkle that can be bought, he shows that us normal riders should focus on burning more fuel (or charge here) to be better a better rider.

@@maxswanson I agree. Any rider who can qualify for an SX final is at least faster than 99% of those who've ridden an MX bike.
I've been riding for almost 40 years, and have been passed by countless great riders, and lucky enough to have been on the track to have been passed, and confused by how a pro rider can be so much faster than I thought possible. And Carson would likely lap those local pros. Riders like him just don't seem human with how they ride.

@@mauibrad1 Doesn't stick out when it in the normal position. It was just coming down due to the terrain. Needs a stronger spring or strap to keep it in place.
Thanks for this test. It gives a good introductory view of these bikes. I think they are really trail bikes more than track bikes and it was good that Carson got some trail time in. The battery size and advertised range is better than most other electric bikes in this category so it will be great to get some real world trail riding tests for them.
I got to meet Carson at this ride day and he is a legit Rad dude! Arctic Leopard USA is working on an MX version coming out soon and it will likely have KYB suspension!

Would love to know what is on the current 880 and if it's any good. Willing to pay more for good suspension right from the Artic Leopard rather than having to screw around with someone going through it or replacing it all together. Would be nice to have KYB on the enduro version, even if it's an optional upgrade, and sprung and valved for enduro or an even softer optional setup (more like a dual sport) for those that want a cush trail experience.

Sorry guys but this is a pretty lame “evaluation or review or whatever”… Forget the slow motion of spinning wheels and flinging dirt. How about some facts like weight, suspension travel and country of origin? Dealer network? Availability? Warranty? Come on, you guys have done good work in the past so please step up now.
I was actually gonna say the same thing. Like really Carson only rode the same section over and over and over. I agree this is a bad review and even worse editing especially from a major magazine publisher.
Sorry you are not happy. This was day 1 and we wanted to get the video out. Like Ron says specifically in the video....a full in depth review is coming with more testing time in the saddle

: O ) dude said suspension was soft... if he looked at the suspension travel in the video and got to see the amount of travel and all the holes it was eating with No Bounce Back,,, he might say, that suspension was perfect. for him to say it was soft after seeing what the suspension was eating on his ride, i think that him saying the suspension was soft,,, is a huge compliment.
To be fair, Carson did not use his signals or horn during the testing. The EAMA has ruled that he loses 2 positions for each infraction.
If the manufacturers are listening, I want the batteries to be swappable and I want it to come with 2 batteries.
They would probably sell it with one to try to keep the cost down then have batteries for sale for anyone who wants another.

That suspension was really soft on the 800. I know Carson mentioned it, but there were a couple of times where it looked like Roczens rear shock after it blew out.
Still, cool to see more companies or there manufacturing bikes.

Im interested in the mid size bikes from this company, they're like higher quality Surrons... The bigger bikes have a little way to go in battery tech before I want one. Say 3x energy density and Im there!
I rode my EXT 600 that day on the Vet track and had a blast!
3X the energy density is not "little to go" lol. Both CATL and Amprius have some 2X more dense (500Wh/kg) batteries coming out soon however so you may get your wish.
@@redlinegw You have the model I want but there arent any dealers in Arizona. Did you opt for the larger 72v 60Ah battery or stay with the 40Ah battery?
@@AlderaansRanger I got the EXT 600 so 72V 40ah and it has been great but if you plan on doing long trail rides I think it would be best to go for the 700.

What its all about!
Electrics are getting so good. Not quite there for me, yet. Awaiting a little bit lighter; more range; faster charging/more swappable battery/affordable battery options; and would like to see the next evolution into all-wheel drive traction options. But hey, they're coming along.
Same. I'm watching closely and it seems we won't have to wait long to get a battery + motor that out lasts a standard 300 2-stroke gas tank, and is somehow 20% lighter.
Hopefully when the battery + motor tech is there, someone like KTM buys/partners and sticks it on a capable frame + the rest.
The official weight is 108kg, but from the riding dynamics it looks more like a 180kg elephant.
That suspension must be really soft because it looked to be bottomed out a lot.
When are all manufacturers going to get it there’s not enough interest in electric bikes it was an ideal fad that never caught on most likely never will 🤷 the genius will be the one who makes a gas engine conversion kit for all e-bikes

Is this a commercial? I missed it somewhere. How long did it take to charge and how far will it go and what’s it made for?
As Carson said, it's made to be a backyard playbike. That doesn't annoy the neighbors or attract attention from the cops. electric bikes range is completely dependent upon how you ride. The Stark can be killed in 35 minutes or it can be ridden for 6 hours. I believe I heard them say you could do one modo, but would need to charge for the second modo or you could do a 50 minute GP on a charge. I'm pretty sure you could do a few hours in the woods.

If you want to buy a high quality motorcycle with an electric motor and a battery pack WAIT for KTM Honda Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki, gas, gas, and some other companies like Husqvarna. The competition to make quality competitive motorcross bikes is on the rise. When they succeed, we will all know about it. We don’t need all these garbage companies building garbage and take it advantage of children with no experience and adults with know knowledge of the subject. Trusty old Carson huh? What suspension? How many hours or minutes the power lasts?
Rating says about 50 minutes so they told us cut that in half. That goes for any lithium battery. Ford Lightning rating says 375 miles but really but it in half when used.
@@DirtBikeMagazine not sure where you got that info, that range you described for the Lightning would be applicable if towing or if the battery is at end of life (not capable of achieving 80% SOC), etc. Under normal driving the Lightning meets the range rating.

51 hp is about 39k watts 364 amps at 105v. 75ah is about 2 hrs of messing around, or 30 minutes all-out

I’d love to win one of these bikes, but probably wouldn’t buy one unless I had tons of extra money. Looks like a lot of fun to tool around on while camping or something.

The word TEST in your title is a bit misleading or should we say optimistic.
Should we make you wait 1-2 months for a video or should we at least give you some initial impressions on day 1? That's what we're up against. Don't know what someones program is unless you put your feet in their shoes for a day.

Instead of showing clips of the bike covering the same section of track over and over… bring the camera in close and show us how well (…or not) the bike is put together while the voice-over provides more detailed information about the things they KNOW WE WANT TO KNOW… Unless… they were afraid to do so or were told not to… so as to not piss certain people off. Yeah, I know… that doesn’t sound like the Dirt bike magazine we all know and love, does it…?

I completely agree! I’d rather pump my dirt bike with dead dinosaurs and smell the sweet smell then sit there waiting for it to charge and then ride it for 30 mins 🤣 I’ll pass!
It takes 5 minutes to clean, no filter cleaning, no oil change, no pistons or clutch 😇

Today I ordered the Arctic Leopard EXE800 because my budget was limited, but I really wanted to get the EXE880. Can you tell me if you think the difference in strength is noticeably felt? Should I regret getting the weaker model? 🙂 Can EXE800 be compared to 250cc or the power is way less?
uhm if Lithium battery Don't run it empty it usually harms the battery some times Bricks them
I love the concept but I still want clutch gears ETC and we need a way to full charge in about 15-20 minutes not 3-5 hours it takes me about 5 minutes to fill my bike and I know it takes a different riding style but basically your just twisting the throttle no skill needed all just my opinion
A very disappointing review if you would even call it that. You don't seem to know they are not MX bikes but trail machines. Lets let Charged Cycleworks or Electric Cycle Rider have these things to really learn about them.
We gave you the same info they gave us on test day. We had a pro test the bike and put it through hard riding versus someone who barely twists the throttle. Sorry you are upset but the fact is.....we gave info including Carson's opinion. Carson didn't break it and that says a lot for the bikes reliability.

From what I was told by some 12 yr old… Carson rode the entire track. The producers decided to show only the same 3 or 4 sections of the track… over and over and over and over again. I guess they were afraid they might anger whomever it was that procured the bikes for the shoot. Yeah… I know… that sure doesn’t sound like the adults that used to run Bird Bike. Oh well...
These are enduro bikes not MX bikes. They are working on an MX version, but this would be like taking a Yamaha WR450 on a track rather than a YZ450. It's an enduro bike with enduro suspension.
The kickstand looks terrible in action.
Essentially an advertisement. Clearly it’s cheaply made. No actual specs means they don’t have to tell you how incredibly heavy it is either.

So… 15 min video that mostly shows the slower, less expensive version of this bike covering the same sections of track and trail over and over… and provides VERY LITTLE information about the bikes… all brought to you, I’m assuming, by the the same time-waisting producers of the useless MXA videos. Come on Ron… You can do better than this.
What other track did you want us to ride? What information didn't you learn? MXA and Dirt Bike don't share the same staff. Only one they shared left almost a year ago. Ron works his a$$ off . Can't wait to see what videos you produce! We'll be waiting to see how you do them!

But I guess thats to be expected. I really don’t care what track you go to. What other information did I not learn…? Where are these bikes manufactured ? (…although I think everyone has pretty much figured that out by now). Who is the US distributor? What suspension and other components is it using? What tires are on the bike. What is the build quality like? If most of Brown’s complaints were about the 800, why didn’t he spend more time on the 880? I am a long time big fan of Ron. But why did the video only show the bikes being ridden over more sections of the track? If parts of it were not available to you, just say so. I mentioned MXA as an example of poor video production values (…like the really crappy shorts of someone sitting on a bike and raving it up while someone walks in a circle around it with a camera. It looks like MXA’s social presence is being handles by a bunch of junior high dropouts. I hate to see Dirt Bike go the same way. But, your reply to my comment does make that look like more of a reality. Hope not….

Correct, our design is geared towards enduro/single track riding. The Stark is designed for MX.
@@PinnedElectric ummm no it’s not, it has an 18” wheel version with a kickstand. The difference is the stark has real suspension not Chinese garbage. It would be a good bike for 7-8k but at 10-11k I’ll pay the little extra for a Stark

Couple of things:
1. Having to use a petrol powered generator to charge these things has to negate almost everything gained from an environmental perspective. Plus it just transfers your supposed lower maintenance on the bike to the generator.
2. Given what these bikes don’t have, ie gear box, clutch, incredibly complex internal combustion engines, fuel injection, fuel tanks etc, can someone tell me how they are so damned expensive? Someone is taking the piss surely.
One word… BATTERIES…!!! Why do you think electric cars cost sooo much more…?
Bike + gen set = more $$$$ than a gas bike....

We love to test motorcycles plain and simple. If we got paid we haven't seen the paycheck in the mail hahaha. We aren't a pay for play media outlet. Sure there are some but thats not us
This is the evolution of the sport. How is it destroying the sport when it is elevating? Colby Raha is also riding electric for urban riding.
