  • This has been a very popular full frame telephoto zoom lens for a long time now. And recently it's come down in price an awful lot. How does it really perform on full frame and APS-C cameras?

    I found this lens on Facebook for $180. I’m looking for a zoom lens for a trip to Yellowstone. I’m a beginner with a Rebel SL1. Do you think this lens would be suitable? Thank you!

      Hello, this is a good lens but try the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.5-5.6 STM. I have used this lens with an SL1 and it’s sharp. I have both lenses and the STM is lighter.

    • @christopherfrost

      +Yannick Bauer You should try to find a lens with at least a maximum aperture of f/4, ideally f/2.8. As for the focal length - it depends how far away you're going to be

  • @michaelhiland4810
    @michaelhiland4810 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Its August of 2022, and I just watched this old review. I like the information and the presentation, but lets be clear about something in regards to using this lens on an APS-C vs FF camera... on an APS-C the effective focal length is 112-480 mm f/4-5.6. So given these specs, at equal focal lengths using equal quality sensors, in theory the image quality at say 300 mm (300 mm FF vs 187.5 mm APS-C) is equal or possibly even better on APS-C cameras. The 60D is also a turd in Canon's X0D history. The 70D, 80D, and now 90D are a drastic improvement over the 60D as it is likely the worst focusing camera body in the past 20 years. This lens is superb in bang for the buck, and works equally well as the 70-300 IS USM II. The newer 70-300 L IS USM is a professional quality lens, and a good improvement, but at nearly 5x the price of this lens. If you dont have one, and only need it for the occasional shot, buy it, you wont regret it.

      Just ordered one of these for my 90D. Mostly out of curiosity. I have the EF-S 18-135 & 55-250 STMs which work well on my 90D. I want to see how the 90D and my C100 mkii handles the 70-300.

    My problems with this lens are some sort of halos or fringes, not so much CA. I use it on a 7D, sharpness is, so far, a gamble, mentioning the "ghosting", no matter what f stop I use. I've shot some seriously sharp and nice images, but it won't even come close to the image and build quality of my Sigma 18-35 Art. It doesn't feel as cheap as other Canon lenses I owned, but the video describes it pretty well. The focusing speed and noise level of the AF and IS are a nightmare. The focusing and ghosting are a riddle, unless you find good settings for unsharp mask, this renders the lens quite useless imo. the only really good use for this lens would be recording video in good light conditions, but woe, there's that god-awful noise... 😑

      I did, I love the STM feature on the 55-250, how silent and fast the auto-focus is, however, since it's only EF-S, I think I'm gonna go with the Tamron 70-300. Thanks for advice, I love your reviews and will continue to watch them.

    • @sammyfromsydney
      @sammyfromsydney 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** The 55-250STM is surprisingly short when focusing on close subjects. I lose about 1/3rd of my frame compared to the Nikon 70-300VR which for birding or sports is a lot. I wish Canon would put out an affordable 70-300STM lens. Judging by the other STM lenses it would be awesome. I have the Tamron 90SP for Nikon and have issues with focus accuracy so I'm reluctant to get the 70-300VC (which in at least one online review exhibited similar tendancies)

    There must be bad copies of the Tamron VC SP USD 70-300mm out there. I purchased one and I ended up selling it. It seemed a little soft and my pictures seemed more noisy for some reason. I honestly thought the Canon 55-250mm USM IS was better. I ended up purchasing this Canon lens and I think its better than both the Tamron and the 55-250mm. I'm shooting with a T3i. Not sure if anyone else had the same experience.

    Hi Christopher, first of all i want to thank you for your reviews and backround informations, also i do apreciate your style, in my opinion there are far to mutch bodybuilding guys with strange hair style aroundYT with close up of them talking :D.
    Now ty my question, i blessed myself this year with the 6D with the 24-105 and the 100 2.8 Macaro non L i sometimes feel the wish to have something more tele. I do own an 70-210 f4 Ef lens from 1987 wich is ok but af speed, accuracy and purple fringes cant satisfy me anylonger. I wonder weather i should get hold of some used canon 70-300 is HSM 250€ non L , an used canon 70-200 4.0 L is 650€ or an used Sigma 70-200 2.8 450€.
    I enjoy to take landescapes but sometimes like fast af to snap a bit action.
    Kind regards from germany

    find I need a bit more of a zoom. I think I'll look up a used version on evil bay, it seems like you can get them for next to nothing.

    I am looking at adding that to our lens line up. I started with a Canon 60D, an 18-135mm canon kit lens, added the 75-300mm USM from a pawn shop for $100. I would suspect that the lens in your review would fare better with less purple and green fringing. I have a Tokina 2X mutliplier and using it on the 75-300mm makes about 960mm when at the 300mm zoom. It has to be just right conditions and camera settings with flash to eliminate enough fringing for the images to be usable.
    Nice review. Thanks

I have a Canon EOS 100D and will probably upgrade to the Canon EOS 7D Mark II when it's released, depending on reviews of course. I am also torn between the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens on cropped cameras. The 'L' lens is double the price and is it worth upgrading to these on my choice of cameras?

      Get the Tamron lens, it's nicer and sharper (check out my review to see why). The 24-105 is great but you'd probably be better off with a fast standard zoom lens, like the Sigma 17-50mm f.2,8 OS. Check out my reviews for more info :-)

      +Wale Wyse It would be a good idea for you to read up about camera lenses a little bit to get an idea of what you need. A good replacement for your 75-300 would be the Canon 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM.

    I have a Canon 750D. I just purchased a Canon 50mm F1.8 for lowlight and portrait... What Telephoto would you suggest for wildlife/sports? I was considering the 70-300m IS USM. Your thoughts?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Josiah B For wildlife you need length (300-400mm). For sports you'll want a faster aperture (f/2.8) - or f/4 at the least

    Hy! I really like your vids! I hope its not a stupid question :) I want to purchase a good telephoto lens for my EOS 650 film camera. Will the IS work with the old camera body? Then my other question is, will this lens worth buying or should i save up more money for the Canon 70-200/F4 USM EF-L (L stands for what? can i attach it to my old EOS film camera? ) Thank you for your answer!!!

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Edslave I /think/ the IS will work - that is a very old camera, though. Take a look at my review of the 'L' lens for more info about that one. It will work on film

      Slightly, it’s subjective but you can get it for about the same price in 2023.

    Hi Christopher, I'm considering selling this lens for the sigma 50-500. In terms of image quality, do you think it's a good idea ? (or sigma 18-300 even better ?) Thanks in advance. Ps: I enjoy your channel.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Quin52 If it's the newer Sigma 50-500mm OS HSM version, then the image quality is about the same - the Sigma lens might actually be a little sharper

      +pjmclach Test them out and see which one you prefer :-) the 55-250 should be a little sharper.

    Christopher, I really value your reviews, I subscribe to you TH-cam channel and have made several purchases based on your recommendations and have been delighted with all of them. However, you are doing yourself a serious disservice with comments like 'for those of you with one of Canon's less expensive apsc cameras'. This is a constant theme in all your reviews and imho alienates apsc users with the 'cheap' comments. Users pick apsc over full frame because it serves their photographic interests better and don't like the inference that they do so because they can't afford a full frame camera. I have a 7D ii and 5D ii and it even winds me up! Keep up the great work and increase your audience by dropping these unconscious patronising references.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sometimes people mention this. Yes, I do say that APS-C cameras are less expensive. But don't mistake that to mean I'm slagging off APS-C cameras - in fact, I've been a Full-frame user for a long time and I'm thinking of going back to APS-C myself, because I miss the extra depth-of-field. The reason I mention that APS-C cameras are generally less expensive is because, 90% of the time, they are. They just are. And for people who don't know much about APS-C vs Full-frame, that's a nice, simple differentiator.

    Hi Chris, I have recently discovered your channel and I like your videos, I am probably your newest subscriber! Very informative and clear videos. I have purchased this lens used on ebay. The IS noise seems very loud, Just to be objective, i used a decibel meter app on my phone and the reading went up from 38 db to 70 db when the IS is turned on. Is this normal for this lens? Thank you

    • @christopherfrost

    Hi Christopher.
    I'm new to photography and have found your reviews invaluable. I love your work! Thank you.
    I recently bought a Canon 80D which I love. I want to buy a decent zoom lens and have narrowed it down to three.....
    1. CANON EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM
    2. TAMRON SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD
    3. CANON EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM
    Image quality across the range is important for me and I am not going to let the cost of the lens to be a consideration when buying, as I intend to get years of use out of the one I purchase.
    Which lens would you recommend I buy?

    Hey would you either recommend the Canon 700D or the 750D . I am a newbie to photography but I would like a camera with great sharpness.
    Also, which lens would you advise me to buy for landscape shots or normal person photography

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 750D will be a bit better (unsurprisingly). See how you do with the 18-55mm kit lens, and then you'll see what kind of lens to look for next.

    Hi, I also own this lens in combination with a 6D. However, I am not able to get an f4 aperture at 70mm (f5.6 is the lowest), whatever setting I try (M, Av, full auto). Now because of this, I suspect the lens is broken. What do you think?

I saw your review about the EF-s 55-250mm f/4-5.6 is stm. What lens is good to buy and not expensive for a 200mm to 300mm max lens? You can sagest any brand. Thanks!
