Hello Brently & Marybeth! Thank you so much for welcoming me on this adventure, so great to see you again and ride with you. Still making beautiful music, only now it is the sound of skinny tires humming and knees creaking. Really, we were good musicians together back in high school, but once we got to University, we were both surrounded by truly excellent musicians with game changing talent and drive. We both found our jam elsewhere, thank goodness. I still have the clarinet, but my guitar and ukuleles are getting the attention now. What an awesome day! Beautiful ride, great company, good support enroute and our bicycles and our bodies held up. I was truly struggling with the altitude adjustment at the beginning and had a moment of wondering whether or not I was gonna make it. Your video footage here is beautiful and really captures the highlights of this ride. Thank you so much for sharing it! You, me Brian...the RBC Sea to Sky Gran Fondo next year: consider it an official invitation.
Todd!!! Thanks for joining us on this epic adventure. Such a great day. And yes, we are still making some beautiful music with our bikes. I also had many moments during the day where I wondered if I'd be able to complete this thing but the views and landscape helped take my mind off the pain. The RBC Sea to Sky ride sounds like something we should definitely consider. Enjoy the Ride
Thank you! We appreciate your continued support. The Triple Bypass training and some diet changes have made a big difference in our weight. We're feeling good. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride
@@BBB_Adventures I get a fit every year or two. Especially with new shoes, or saddle or bars. It is not something to not do. Really enjoy your story telling, wish we had more from Taiwan! You guys are so lucky!!
Howdy, Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. It was an amazing day and an amazing ride. The epic scenery and views really helped keep my mind off the suffering. Part 2 will be posted on Saturday morning. Enjoy the Ride
Wepa!!! Omg this is wonderful place the view outstanding great work i love the sound tracks going down hill this is to get to the bucketlist lol cant wait next one Go Brentley Go Brentley Go Go!!
Hey Rene! Yes, the views on this ride in Colorado were AMAZING. It was a very tough ride but the epic views help take my mind off the pain. It's a good ride if you have any ambition for this kind of suffering. Thanks for feedback on the sound track. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride
Hi KC, Thank you! It really was a difficult day but at the same time super rewarding. Please stay tuned for Part 2 which will post on Saturday. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride
Been away Brantley. Saw you went through some challenges and emerged victorious as usual. Looks like you are back and that's great news. Keep progressing along and remember GHS always.
Hey Frank! So great to hear from you! Welcome back. Yes, life did through some challenges our way but we worked through them and tried to stay positive and forward focused. Things are very good now and have many adventures planned for the future. Please stay tuned. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride
The scenery is so beautiful! Train & trestle were cool! Looks like between the climbing the long miles and thin air that it pushes you to the max physically! Better have good brakes for the descents, how’d your rim brakes hold up, have to stop and let the brakes/rims cool off? Any idea on how many riders there were? Any feel for what caused the cramping (fueling, hydration, not enough electrolytes, low cadence/too high power output/big gear, etc)? Great bucket list ride!
Hey Steve, Getting caught up on some comments. This was definitely a real physical challenge but also worth the effort. It a fun achievement to complete. I took the bike into the bike shop a month or so before the ride and had a 32 tooth cassette installed and had them give it a complete check including the brakes. I run Cool Stop brake pads which I've had good luck with. I did stop once on the Loveland pass descent to change a GoPro battery and I checked the temperature of the rims and while they were hot, it wasn't really anything alarming. They only allow 4500 riders to register and it sold out so not counting any unregistered riders, there were 4500 of us. I honestly don't know what the cramping was caused from. It's rare for me to get cramping. It was probably a combination of all the factors you mentioned. You should absolutely add this to your list of rides. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride
Brent, After RAGBRIA last year (525 miles total), my right knee started acting up. Soon, I could barely walk. I went to a sport med Doc and he told me my tendons etc were fine and he suspected rumatoid Arthritus (SPIC) :). Long stroy short, he perscribed Meloxicam 15mg, and I'm CURED!!!
Hey Ken, Thanks for the comment and for sharing your experience with Meloxicam. Something I'll look into if my knee continues to give me trouble. So happy you've had such as great result. Ride on!! Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride
Awesome! Looking forward to Part 2. You made a comment about the oxygen taken out of the air. Was altitude an issue? We made a trip to Keystone, CO and the altitude was hard on my sinuses. We also were thirsty all the time. It was winter, so that may be part of the dry air.
Hey Craig, The reduced oxygen at the higher altitudes was certainly noticeable but didn't seem to impact my strength but did cause my heart and breathing rate to increase for the same effort. I was also trying to drink more than I usually do to help deal with the altitude. I'm glad you enjoyed Part 1 and hope you also enjoy Part 2 next week. As always, thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride
It looks like a great ride !! I'll have to try it next year !! I parked my bike next to you and the red dragon at the Ragbrai expo. But I didn't get to say hello. You were in a deep conversatoin with someone and I didn't want to interupt. Maybe I'll catch you next year.! Great video !
Hey Bill, It was a great ride. Please stay tuned for Part 2 on Saturday. Sorry we missed you at Expo. :( Next time just interrupt me...no conversation is too deep to get to chat with a great supporter like you. Thanks for watching, happy to hear you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride
Yay. New video mornings are always welcome. Hill climbing is someones favorite things to do on a bicycle says every 165 pounder. Lol. Now every 205 pounder says their favorite thing on a bicycle is stopping for lunch and a beer. Yes, I do drink beer but was having cramping issues the last few years and wasn't sure if it was the beers. No problems at all this years Ragbrai. What the heck were they thinking of when they put those orange cones on the road giving the riders 2ft off the shoulder. Dawww.. yelling at poor disco while riding bye will put him into counciling. Congrats on the ride and your success.
Hi Dave, I do enjoy the hill climbing...not sure why...perhaps I need professional help. However, I also like stopping for lunch and a beer (or two). Glad you didn't have cramping this year, and we enjoyed having a few beers with you and riding with you. I have no clue why they set up those cones on that section of the Triple Bypass but it forced a single lane of bikes which makes no sense when there are 4500 people riding the event. I thought it was so cute how Disco cried for me as I passed by. I suppose he was wondering why he couldn't ride with me. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride
Hey! Just getting caught up on comments. The training for the Triple Bypass absolutely helped my slog the Red Dragon up the hills in Iowa. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride
Howdy, The descents were definitely exhilarating and the epics views helped keep my mind off the grind of those big climbs. This ride was a huge challenge but also a meaningful achievement for me. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride
Hi BBB, Congratulations on your Triple Bypass progress. I know the final outcome but I won't give it away. Good to finally meet you at RAGBRAI. We have our Disco stickers on our tote bins. I really thought I'd run into you again but I guess it was not to be. We successfully finished RAGBRAI and back in SLC again. The hills were plentiful but it made for some beautiful scenery. I'll be going through IF on Sunday on my way to Island Park but only spending a short time. I'll have to look you up when time permits. Rider On!!!
Hey Earl, Sorry it's taken so long to reply. Thanks for the comment. So cool you found an awesome place for your Disco sticker. We are also happy we did meet face to face and look forward to seeing you again in Iowa (or anywhere else...maybe SLC). Totally agree, the scenery this years was fantastic and so was the weather. We should definitely get together sometime and ride bikes. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride
Hey Vic, So great to hear from you! It was an amazing day, I would certainly encourage you to do it if you have the desire. It does take a bit of training but so worth it. Who knows, maybe I'll do it again. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride
Excellent video. The gradual incline of those hills seem more doable than the ones at RAGBRAI. Maybe I didn't have the right gearing. Congradulations on your conquest of the hills. Maybe this will be on my bucket list
Um. No? I've never been to Iowa but the climbs up Squaw Pass and Loveland Pass are brutal on the Saturday ride. If you do the Sunday ride you have to climb Vail Pass right out of the chute and it's ugly then you get to finish with the steep side of Squaw Pass going back to Evergreen in the heat of the afternoon. Some fun! I won't be doing the Sunday ride again...
Hey Phyllis, I think there is a difference between the grade of the hills and the length of the climbs between Colorado and Iowa. A lot of the climbing on the Triple Bypass was 4% or 5% but there were very long climbs, like 20+ miles of climbing. However there were some steep sections in Colorado as well, but shorter. Iowa had shorter climbs with fairly steep grades. Either way, climbing does require training and as you said low gearing helps. I changed the rear cassette on my road bike to a 32 tooth large (it was 28) gear which I think really helped me with the long climbs in Colorado. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride
2:30 I'm sure that fans are completely reasonable, but maybe consider blocking out your friend's house number since you mentioned their city and that they have kiddos. You never know about crazies. I think I've heard about there being a feature to do it in the TH-cam Creator Studio.
Hey Jo, I'm a bit slow to respond but we took immediate action when you made the comment and blurred out the house number as you suggested. Thanks for that. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride

Still think the knee is something mechanical and solvable on the bike.

Perhaps. I did have the Giant road bike professionally fit years ago when we lived in Taiwan. Maybe it's time for a refresh.
Thanks.
