Gaming laptops have two graphics cards onboard. One is the powerful one for gaming - the dedicated GPU, or dGPU for short - and the other is the low power one built into the CPU itself - called the integrated GPU or iGPU for short. For the sake of battery life, the iGPU is the one that runs your displays basically any time you aren’t gaming, and the dGPU is literally turned off. When you fire up a game though, the dGPU takes over, and renders your game as fast as it can. The problem with having two graphics cards connected to one display is a bit of a tricky one to solve though. NVIDIA came up with “Optimus” over a decade ago now to do just that. Basically, the dGPU’s video signal was routed THROUGH the iGPU, and then to the display. Optimus would control which GPU was the one doing the rendering.

To solve this just go to your BIOS and find “Display” and choose “Discrete GPU only” so it will improve your performance in triple A games

cant you select wich gpu starts with certain executables in start>settings>games? its probably a good test, throw some amd notebook and an egpu in the mix and see if windows 10/11 respects those settings with each driver, if windows changes devices correctly.

Great explanation! If only there was an option to run dGPU only on AC power, and switch to Auto select on battery..

So when the laptop is plugged in, is there any reason to leave it on automatic, or should I just set it to GPU only and be done with it?

I leave it on dGPU only because I keep it plugged in most of the time. It frees up a bit more RAM because the iGPU isn't using it. Plus it improves FPS by a bit.
When I'm travelling I keep it on automatic or integrated-only mode.

How does it work when you plug into an external monitor through a thunderbolt port that connects to the igpu? My Nvidia control panel is locked on automatic select in that scenario. Does that mean I'm getting advanced Optimus? And would I get better performance if I plugged in to the monitor through the USBC that connects directly to the dgpu?

Nvida advanced optimus interferes with some game’s internal settings. I was facing massive micro stuttering while playing bf2042 and when i switched to dgpu only, the experience was buttery smooth.

For better battery backup I have to choose automatic or optimus mode ??

Biggest confusing stuff us the nvidia naming. optimus does nit really help. the should really call it igpu. My issue on my lenovo is that when you connect an external 360hz gaming display, nv panel tells me that no display is connected to the dGpu. That message us wrong. It is connected, but always through the igpu, which indeed can be seen in the physix config in the nv panel. confusing. And gsync in some occasions isn‘t detected.

I have a Lenovo LOQ witth rtx4050 on automatic mode after I play CS2 once I closed it my laptop stutters consistently every 8-9 seconds and it wont resolve unless I restart the computer or switch the mode to the regular optimus. drivers are all up to date. Im not sure why automatic mode causes micro stutter after playing games

Dude i got the same issue and it drives me crazy it doesnt stutter on hybrid mode but in dgpu mode it stutters like hell

So far, thanks to Advanced Optimus:
1: Brightness slider lockout. I spent so much time on this before finding out it was AO. It's a huge nightmare across many laptops going back to ~2021. Basically you gotta restart your laptop every time you want to change brightness, regardless of the GPU you use.
    2. When I manually switch to the dGPU, it starts bouncing around 126-128 Hz (out of 165) plugged in. Performance seems jumpy too.
    3. 4060 never shuts off for whatever reason I guess. Says 210 MHz in Omen Gaming Hub. This would explain why when I did a battery life test and it came out to almost exactly the same whether I was on the iGPU or dGPU. Defeating the whole purpose of AO.

Hi i'm still a bit confused. My laptop is connected to a monitor i use for gaming but i also i like using the laptop screen to watch a video while gaming. I'm i losing performance since my laptop screen is still ON? With this setup i also notice the display mode is locked on OPTIMUS can't change to automatic or Nvidia only.

@@henryavery5529 No I didn't get answer but honestly I don't mind losing little performance if having the laptop screen on affects performance. You can try playing a particular section of a game with and without the screen on and see how they compare

I've predator neo 16. When I'm on "nvdia gpu only" and "automatic" mode, the laptop shuts down normally. But when I'm on "optimus" mode, the laptop always give a message that 'windows host running in background' while shutting down. And it automatically force shut downs. Can anyone tell me that, Will this affect my laptop as the 'shutdown anyway' option is selected automatically?
