Every illegal immigrant goes through a perilous, potentially lethal journey, and we in the wealthy west wholly neglect the fact that they are willing to go that far when shaping our own policies, as well as abandoning any proper sincerity towards people across the world that experience life in a way that merits going to these lengths to escape it.
They didn't else they would be dead. Drinking a cup of seawater dehydrates you something like equivalent of a day without water, and humans can survive about 3 without water.
They probably drank so little. It was 3 days without food or water. It wouldn't have been fun, but they easily could have survived it. I bet if they had to go any longer drinking seawater they would have died though. Only worked because of the 3 day period.
Brazil isn’t that bad. A multiracial society with some flaws no different to the US. Their passport is also pretty good. Getting Brazilian citizenship in a few years if they’re claim is accepted will make their life easier. If they still desire to live abroad at least they’ll have their new country to care for them.
@danielw3076 obviously. And I'm not saying Brazil is an amazing country to be in either but when you're willing to cross the ocean for 14 days like that and drink sea water, Brazil has to be better than what you're running from.
How can you actually survive 14 days on ships rudder on the ocean without getting swept away by a wave, without food or drinking water or drying of hypothermia It doesn't make sense to me It also said that they drank seawater for four days which is not possible due to the amounts of salt in seawater There are some holes in this story
That rudder is pretty high above calm water, so outside of a storm they aren't getting swept up by a wave. It sounds like they brought some food and water, but not enough. They're in the tropics (closer to the equator than Florida), so hypothermia isn't likely. You can live without water for 4 days (3 days is a conservative estimate), and mixing seawater and freshwater might be a valid survival strategy. Even if this story is exaggerated, the "that was rough, I'm never doing it again" sentiment is likely accurate. I'd at least want a decent story to tell at bars if I went through that.
