“Ointment, that’s what you need when your heads been cut off, that’s what I gave your sister Mary when they done her! ‘There, there’s, I said, ‘you’ll soon grow a new one!’” Nursie, Black Adder II episode ‘Head’.
No member of the guild would do stoop to walking up to the platform, rather than leaping to it. But then again, the craft did fall very far outside of the Citadel.
how much the condemned man or woman suffered depended on a variety of factors. The class of the condemened, their actual crime (regicides for instance took a very long time to die indeed), as well as the actual time period and culture. There was no uniform and regular procedure for excecutions, it could even come down to the particular lord who passed the sentence (some aristocrats were of course sadists). Generally the scene captures the barbarism of public executions like these but the details don't necessarily mean anything or correspond to real practice.
It depends on the country and time period. The sword was widely used in Europe up into the 18th century. There are many examples on display in European museums. Meister Franz Schmidt of Nurnberg and his father before him used the sword. His diary print as The Faithful Executioner, is fascinating reading. Henri Sanson argued for a more humane method of execution before the introduction of the guillotine. He said that if he had to execute several people, he needed more than one sword and that the spectacle was ghastly both for the executioner and his victims. These men were not just executing nobles as Schmidt's diary shows. The sword was last used carry out executions in 1867 and 1868 in Switzerland. It eventually fell out of favour as it took considerable skill to use. Indeed there are instances of an executioner being killed by the crowd for botching an execution. In place of the sword, the ax came into use. It was designed for the job unlike the one on display in the Tower of London. It had a very broad, heavy blade and a much shorter haft and was extremely effective, quick and much easier to use than the sword. The sword was used for executions in many European states including Prussia, Switzerland, France , Poland, Lithuania, Holland.

@lawrencewood289 Very true. Get The Faithful Executioner if you can and see just how bad it was for Franz Schmidt's father, not to mention the extraordinary story of Franz himself. Although it eventually worked out well for him. I won't spoil it for you by telling you any more. His house still exists.
The spanish subtitle wrote "El matador" for the executioner. Now I understand why matador is called matador in the disgusting culture of bullfights in the spanish world.
@@Preussen2222 There are MANY that say if we purchase commercially slaughtered beef, it was tortured. No, as a hunter I do not believe in torturing animals harvested for food. No. Almost certainly there would have been a block. Also, unless of very high rank it would have been an ax not a sword. Bad historical knowledge.
