  • Take a short trip with me to Dawson City, Canada. Have a look at how the "average, not for TV" miner gets gold. No staged arguments, breakdowns, or deadlines. No scripted drama, or ridiculous million ounce goals. Just average miners trying to make a few bucks and have a little fun doing it. The mining season lasts from May to the first of October, or as soon as the water freezes. Thanks for watching.

    By far and away one of the best gold mining videos I've seen. Love the fact that you show the journey and how rugged everything still is up there. She puts on overalls during the day and can operate any piece of equipment you ask of her, and if she quits a little early she can head back to camp and cook a gourmet meal for you when you knock off for the day. And I can personally testify to her great cooking. :) A fantastic lady. Thanks for the comment.

    • @Dr.G
      @Dr.G  5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      It's actually more environmentally friendly than using a bulldozer or excavator because it uses much less diesel and you don't have to build heavy load roads. With conventional mining you have to use giant dump trucks to move thousands of yards of dirt overland. When using a monitor all the dirt flows down a 4 foot wide stream to a predetermined settling pond where the dirt, water, and mud is allowed to settle and separate. The clean water then flows back to the river.
      In the old days it wasn't that the monitors were tearing up the ground, "even heavy equipment back then could tear up the ground", it was the uncontrolled flowing of dirt back into the main rivers that caused all the damage, and eventually led to it's temporary ban (most notably in California). They used no settling ponds then and millions of yards of dirt was allowed to clog up major rivers causing massive flooding. If used properly, monitoring is a great way to concentrate the dirt. But you have to be on a claim that is sloped to take advantage of "hydraulic mining". Thanks for the comment.

    A video like this makes me realize why it's so hard to find happiness in modern day society. We, mankind, were meant to be out in the wild, blazing new trails, rediscovering old ones, and witnessing first hand the beauty of our earth. Sure does make me think about the blight that every day life puts on our surroundings. That's it! I've talked myself into it! I don't mind being the Bobcat operating rookie and working 12 hours a day until the time for work is done. Dr. G, where does one sign up for such an adventure as this and what is the upfront cost?

    • @Dr.G
      @Dr.G  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Well said Greg. Men are designed to conquer, build, and discover. Modern society is a slow kill. It's rare today for a man to realize that. Your life will be over before you know it, so don't waste a day. If you follow the pack you'll end up being depressed looking at a cell phone all day long. Make plans to get out there and do it. Check with the Canadians as far a working in that country. Also, maybe Alaska has some mining opportunities. My own claims are not ready for mining yet, but I'm sure you can find something if you do the research.

    Thank you, that little film was a complete revelation to me :) - I'm so glad that people are doing this, and more importantly, having so much fun doing it - I'm envious! - The UK hasn't got anywhere near that concentration of gold and what there is, is so closely guarded you just can't get to it - not on an ordinary Joe's wage anyway...
    I know that those TV series are 'dramatised' to pull the audiences, and the scripts drive me batshit crazy to the point where I can't watch them any more, despite the cool stuff they're doing, but I had no idea that people were just 'getting on with it' - so, well done :) and please, keep showing us more of that beautiful terrain.

    Nice of you to share this info. I been up there with pans fora while. The average person will not find enough gold to make it worthwhile. Also a little history : At the height of the gold rush in 1898 and 1899, more than one million people made plans to go to the Klondike area of the Yukon Territory of 1898 in northwestern Canada, and one hundred thousand plus actually got up there. Half of them left with nothing. Quite a few froze or starved and died. A fun place to see.

    • @Dr.G
      @Dr.G  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Great info. That's part of the reason I choose to come so far to mine and explore. Very few places have this history. Probably "more" than half left with nothing..., but a few got filthy rich and used that money to start large businesses. I've heard many stories of well known companies that were started (in the early part of the 20 century) with money a miner made in the Klondike. Someone should do research and write a book explaining where all the gold/money went. Thanks for the comment.

    Awesome video mate, this gave me a beautiful insight to the Yukon on an everyday level which involves no publicity paid actors and dramatized scenes for major tv channel's involving gold miners, hopefully one day I can afford an extended holiday to Canada and check out the gold and big trees, thumbs up from Australia.

    • @Dr.G
      @Dr.G  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot Wedge for the kind words. I tried hard to show what the average, everyday miner experiences. It's really a 'back to basics life" up there as a sole, or mom and pop, operator. The gold shows don't really show how the vast majority of miners live and work. Mark Twain said "truth is stranger than fiction"... and I believe that in the Yukon the everyday miner is much more interesting that the "gold show fiction" LOL. Tonys stuff isn't garbage and it's not abandoned, there's no hard and fast parking rules off the main streets in the Yukon, he's living his dream like a lot of other people up there, it's a far cry from city life where everything and everybody is regulated to death/conformity, being a territory not a province makes life so much easier, goverment is a breeze there, eg. drivers licence renewal, same day service, it's laminated and in your hand when you walk out the door, almost a fantasy eh? goverment picture id? less than $20 laminated and in your hand before you leave, in the same building. Land use permits are easy to obtain, homestead/farm land ownership is still possible by the average person, if a person is missing the city you can go to Whitehorse lots of box stores now and with the influx of people moving up from down south they seem to bring the city mentality and the desire to be ruled and regulated, so I stay in Dawson when I go back up, at least there no one stares if you don't comb your hair, lol.

    Excellent video man 👍 it's only taken me 4 years to get a notification 😂 subscribed now and look forward to seeing more from you. I've been prospecting and making videos since 2015 so I don't know why I've not come across your channel until now! I've watched thousands. ❤️💛💚
