I've came back to this song yesterday, which marks the 18th birthday of a toxic friend I ceased contact with. For years I was in a group that would hurt me both mentally and physically, but that I still hung out with and considered friends. Slowly but surely I stopped talking to them, as I managed to find better friends. Actual friends. Lately, one of them messaged me. The one whose birthday was yesterday. And the exact words popped in my head, "I forgot that you exist".
Listening to this after finally letting my toxic "friendship" burn to the ground :) It's a great feeling to finally accept that you're under no obligation to sympathize with people who hurt you.
Funny thing: i once forgot one of my classmates for basically 3 months. There wasn't anything that reminded me of that classmate. After 3 months i heard the name and i needed about 20 seconds to remember why that name was familiar.
Well, it still works. If someone considers your life irrelevant, then there's no point in them trying to find something that implies you might want them back, or, in other words, no point looking for significance.
The singer, being the one suggesting it, should be the one to tell off the other person though, so it would make more sense to be "To you, my life should be irrevelant" but that, of course, would be crazily off tune and mess with the context of the song, as the singer is mainly talking about how much they no longer care for the other person. If the other person were to stop caring for the singer, then the roles would be switched, and the song would have no perpose. The singer's goal in talking smack to the other would have already been achieved.
