Print on Demand Review and Comparison for Artists | FinerWorks vs. Gooten vs. Art of Where

  • I'm switching to a print-on-demand service for all of my prints! I ordered samples from 3 different print-on-demand platforms including FinerWorks, Gooten, and Art of Where (link below for my review of Printify and why I had already decided against it for art prints). In this video, I will compare the services based on color, quality of the paper, packaging, shipping times, etc, and I will tell you which one I end up going with!

I appreciate this video!! Finally an artist review not someone with their 8th t shirt business claiming to make 10k a month.
I currently sell and make bookmarks, prints and cards, it’s a lot of work and I wanted to expand my designs onto different items, but I’m worried about me not “hand making” it but it seems a lot of artists do this and there’s nothing wrong with it. I only outsource my stickers, but it can be hard to have a bunch and they don’t sell… so I’ve been looking at print on demand. It seems the most feasible for what I want.
I was looking at art of where, but I was worried as they’re in Canada and sell to the US it might affect shipping… but how your print was handled makes me trust my feelings I had after I contacted customer service and it took them over 2 weeks to get back to me. It sucks because they offer a vast selection of products, but I don’t want customers receiving damaged goods!
I was looking into gooten and printify, but printify I’ve heard mixed reviews about the quality so I was unsure. I am glad you mentioned how digital artists might benefit from gooten though! I never heard of finer works though so I will look into them!
Why work harder when you can work smarter? I want to put my designs on journals and pencil/accessory pouches for now and then do more.

It is good to know I am not the only one who obsesses over to print my self or to "farm" it out! I never found anyone who was acceptable in my area but I was not willing to go to far away to have it done by a larger company. I still have my large Epson 4800 printer and that was a huge investment, but it still works so well. I may consider printing again if I ever start reproducing prints for sale or re-open a web store. I hope you have success with this new aspect of your business.
    Have a lovely day!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. Your artwork is freaking beautiful and made me instantly want veggies 😅
I just started my POD apparel business and realized my prints are going to be hard to replicate with some of these POD companies. If the colors look one way in clothing, doesn’t mean it’s going to look the same on paper. I’m just now realizing this. Your video seriously helped me in ways I didn’t even realize I didn’t have mapped out quite yet. I just found out about the company you went with and couldn’t be more thankful for this video- it saved me so much time. Thank you so much 🙏🏿

Thanks for the print on demand information ! I just wondered what you meant when you said you would no longer be able to sign your prints. I’m just thinking can’t you sign before scanning so even though it’s not a fresh signature on each print of one design it is your signature none the less and I think people love seeing that.

Really excellent detailed review! Perhaps Guten may have a rendering requirement? E.g. CMYK vs RGB. If so this may account for why their prints appear over saturated. If you haven't already might wanna look into that. A lot of designers will be displeased with their sample prints having missed this important factor. Be mindful of the importance of distinguishing native settings from export settings. Also, you needn't give up signing your work if you have a drawing tablet, you can load your image into an application (inkscape, PS, GIMP etc.) and create a permanent signature which can then be anchored to the finished work. This image of your signature can be used indefinitely. Hope this helps. Thanks again!

When a customer clicks on the buy button at your site or etsy or wherever, and the order goes directly to the printer, what becomes of your customer? What becomes of his personal and financial information. Does the customer then belong to the printer? Will the printer try to upsell the customer. Will the printer provide alternate sources for your customer? I'd like to sell some of my work but there's a lot to consider. Most of the information available is directed toward the gullible. The printers are not forthcoming with this information. I do not wish to get paid by a printing company. It's as though I'm a commissioned salesman busting my butt for scraps. I will look into your printers and Finer works in particular. Subject matter aside, You cant get top dollar for anything less than beautiful. Thanks for that wonderful comparrison. I'm very impressed.

Agree on the expensive international shipping, though I'm not sure how much that's specifically a FW problem. Personally I had to stop shipping to the EU and UK (my biggest markets outside of the US and Canada) because of complicated VAT requirements.

Odd. I just watched another review of Finer Works that simply trashed them. Cheap quality, off colors, and poor packaging. I don't think video color comparisons are worthwhile, but the other Finer Works review showed some really cheap packaging and poor-quality product. I guess ordering products and making your own decision is the only way to go.
