Goodness gracious, Jerry's deep rich late 80s voice is like fine wine on Lady With A Fan. 🌹🍷 Damn! Stupendous Terrapin! Phil bombs everywhere!!!💥💥💥 (edit) Add Stella and Baby Blue to Jerry's mastery of ballad singing. He sounds like he's crying on Baby Blue. The most emotional singer ever! 😣
Garcia and the boys were in the pocket big time, Garcia and his Tiger Guitar with that amazing tone... only guy in the world that could sound like this.The Jam at the end of Deal sounds like a beautiful musical Hurricane 😬💪💪🔥🔥🔥
Beautiful interplay between Jerry and Bob on the Chinacat jam. Fast tempo all night. The Rythym Devils are driving the bus. Beautiful Brent era shit! This is what I grew up on. I was only 23 here But those France 74 shows were so great! I no longer know what era I prefer. Thanks Okie! 😀
In all my years of touring, Philly was by far the roughest crowd the Dead ever played before, but, oh, did they love the band. One incredibly raucous showin the early '80s had Bobby way out in front before a wild, brawling audience. He was just loving it. People were throwing things on stage, not missiles intended to hurt, just roses, panties, cups, etc. Finally, someone tossed this beautiful full-length leather coat (you could see it was very expensive) that managed to drape itself over Bobby's fretboard. Took him a couple if seconds to get it off but the others played on. Bobby flipped off the crowd and very deliberately handed to coat to someone backstage. Oh, yeah, and this tiny little woman usher just wailed this giant metal flashlight into my stomach, ordering me to extinguish my joint. It hurt like hell for thirty seconds, but I rolled with it and relit the joint. One usually thinks of Dead shows as peaceful Meccas, but not Philly!
Didnt they bust out Box Of Rain in Philly? Or was it the Cap Center in Landover? I had an audience tape of the Philly Box in 86 and I could hardly hear the music because the crowd was so loud.

These shows were special, the NFL was on strike and the Philadelphia Eagles were in a picket line, Madonna played the Spectrum the night before (that's why Bobby was wearing a Madonna T-shirt). Meanwhile U2 was scheduled for a show at JFK Stadium the night after the run was over and we hung out and partied and watched them build the U2 stage, or you could take a walk and hang out with the Philadelphia Eagles players (kinda). What a fun run that was. The morning after the third night, I went to a porta-potty because I had to go and opened the door to one of them and it looked like a pyramid of poop coming up out of it...you can't make this shit up!
Right? At the peak of his solo, his amp is shredding out a tone that is rare for Jer. Had my bose headphones on and when he finished I was like "holy shit!"
"Handsome Cabin Boy Waltz Tease -> Playin Tease -> Wheel Just sayin. Some beautiful stuff too I might add." You hit the nail squarely on the head here. (~);}

Healey(?) still tweaking mix in Althea. Drum panning and EQ's shifting. Finally turns up Bobby near the end lol. Seems to have it pretty well dialed in by third tune, Little Red Rooster where Brent drops a slammin Hammond solo, and Jerry responds by damn near blowing the roof off. Sounds like his amp was on the edge of exploding. 🔥 The jam in Cassady is NUTS!
Healy messing with the vocals through the whole first set but I liked it when he did that shit. I didn't like it when he took Bob out of the mix. Some Heads say it's BS but there's many shows when you can't hear Bob at all.
@@staggerlee4979 I didn't bring up because I wanted to stay positive. Healy was the only downside. He fucked with Bobby right from the start here; not something I enjoyed. (I could see the benefit of it in the Other One, but he did it every time and just too much during it imo).
Okie, I can't thank you enough for posting this show. I was there and it was a good show. Quality stuff. I still have vivid memories. People were trying to figure out what Hey Pocky Way was. Bobby was good on slide on LRR until the 2nd part of last solo. He always pushed that too far. I like the spacing between songs. Reminded me of good ol' GD. I recall Adams Family as Jer was into playing little tv melodies. I wonder if that was part of the coma recovery.Sweet first set. Althea and Masterpiece: 2 thumbs up to each. I've mentioned on D and C chats that I'd like to see Oteil sing When Push Comes to Shove. When Spencer Davis was coming out, people were screaming Springsteen! and a few other guesses. I'll let the rest of the 2nd set speak for itself :).
Springsteen. Lmao. Brent said he would have never covered Devil With A Blue Dress if he knew Springsteen had sung it. Not sure if that was a compliment or an insult.
I don't think it's a song. It sounds like Jerry noodling a riff that has a similarity to Terrapin. Sounds like just him and Bob. It's a nice segment from 1:43:00 to about 1:48 when they drift into Bob's Playin tease.
Sounds to me like the melody from an old folk song. Could be an improv, but someone out there might know what song it is. Reminds me of their 68 era Aoxamoxoa style psychedlic/medieval vibe.
Stagger Lee, I can't find your question. I'm torn between Hampton and Philly, I don't know.. I know Phil told the band he wanted to do Unbroken Chain in Philly. I think he basicallly had them open with it because no one suggested anything else.
It was one of those "too much, too fast" things. In 2 runs of shows in Oakland (Coliseum & HJ Kaiser) out of 7 shows they played it 6 times.i caught them all & even though I liked the tune I didn't need or want to hear it again for a while.
Try this on TH-cam Folks: CRYPTOBEAST #19 You're WELCOME! ..........BY A DEADHEAD: " It seems as though Chalmers Wood II is the real Forrest Gump. I cried when I read the story of young Chip saving that diplomatic meeting. I think we’re certainly looking at a real American Hero even before he knew he was. It’s inspiring to read a story with that old patriotic American “feeling”, something generations upon generations since then have no idea about which included an innocence of inclusion, family and a healthy sense of pride about the nation. It was a very refreshing and inspirational moment. I have a renewed sense of vigor for the concept that the Grateful Dead espoused. Even though only a shell of the original concept remained even before it was started somehow I think part of that light had shown through because some of us deadheads just won’t give up on this journey."
