This should be part of the Coovum river cleaning project. There is plenty of expertise and brain available all over India. Policy makers must have a program to identify them and create projects for the betterment of our country.

I'm following this subject (cleaning cooum, Adyar rivers and Buckingham canal) since 1970s. Every state Govt (obviously started by the 'most honest' MK) allots funds for this project with a promise that within their tenure these water bodies will be clean. But nothing has happened in the last 5 decades. Whereas all the allocated project fund gone...?! Without addressing the root cause it's absolute waste of money spending on cleaning these water bodies. The root causes, in my opinion, are, the letting of sewage and gray water directly into these water bodies by the slums/residences living on or close to the banks, factory waste, encroachments, etc.
Wonderful Interview & most useful information! Hope all youngsters will join hands to pressurize the Tamil Nadu Govt, to implement what Mr Manickam has suggested!!

@Krishnamurthy N ....Who gives a (s)(h)(i)(t) about Dravidian politicians? Let me give you a piece of history. Nearly 50 years, the Singapore river was as bad as the Coovum River. Their Govt spent millions in cleaning that river and it is now one of the most cleanest rivers in the world. That river was neglected for many decades until Lee Kuan Yew came to power in 1965. What I am trying to say is that....It is the Government's responsibility in every country. From 2021, there will be a lot of pressure on Governments (both state and central) all over the world to invest heavily in such projects to make cities clean and water cleaner. Bottom line is that, 2021 is the beginning of the end of apathy, carelessness and corruption. The deadline is 2050.

@@smartpurushoth ...Yes, there are solutions. I hope you have the patience to read. To find the solutions, you have to get to the root cause of the problem. Coovum river originates in the Thiruvallur District which is about 70kms from Chennai. In between the 70kms there are several factories close to the river discharging chemical and industrial wastes, thousands of slum dwellers living close to the river release body wastes. These two combined thickens the water, then hundreds and thousands of plastic bags and plastic products are thrown into the river which slows down the flow and in some places the water becomes stagnant and stinks. As the river gets closer to Egmore, it splits into two small narrower rivers and rejoins after a few kms. More human and factory wastes are drained into these two rivers before they rejoin around the Island Grounds. At this stage, the water is black and smells really horrible. The river slowly comes to a standstill because of the sand between the river end and Bay of Bengal sea. Now coming to the solution. Singapore in the 1960s and 70s faced a very similar problem. The Singapore government forcefully vacated thousands of people living close to the Singapore River. Singapore Housing Development Board (HDB) built alternative housing in another part of the city. Septic tanks were built for every apartment and biowaste was regularly collected from these septic tanks. Factories discharging industrial wastes were either closed or forced to relocate. Garbage collection from every household was greatly improved and became highly efficient. Garbage (including plastic products and bags) no longer ended up in the river. All these were done at a cost of US$200 million. A very huge amount in the early 70s. But for Singapore it was a price worth paying. If the same plan is implemented in Chennai today, it could easily cost close to US$5 billion given the city's size and population. That is about Rupees 5000 from every person in Tamilnadu. Now that I have answered you question. Can you please give me your solution to the problem? Your arrogant nature will make you either laugh or find fault at my solution.

@@bhaskarrajendran79..The figure I have quoted includes relocating people living close to Coovum River and nearby factories discharging industrial waste into the river. I included the people because many of them lack toilet facilities and new flats have to be built with septic tanks. The total cost of cleaning the river and relocating people and factories would come close to US$5 Billion (ie., tax contribution of Rs 5000 per person in Tamilnadu). Also, bear in mind that this US$5 Billion also includes building or installing septic tanks for ALL residents of Chennai. Believe me, 300 crores quoted by Manickam is not enough for this project. Sufficient money should also be allocated for redirecting every household's waste water to septic tanks and from their to water distillation plants. There are lots of additional costs involved in it. I hope I have made myself clear.

The strong acids and chemicals that we all use to clean our toilets and bathrooms will kill these good microorganisms in the septic tank. In few months time no microorganisms will exist in the septic tank to work on our waste. I've experienced this problem myself. And the microorganisms/eco-friendly cleaning products are not really effective in deep cleaning. This is a practical issue and needs a solution so this idea of MAK can be implemented.
Prevention is better than cure.......
As Manickam said at the end "it's a cultural issue."

A person rented his house. The tenant used to feed the street dogs daily. But tenant's intentions were not very honest. He started selling things that belonged to the house, such as its doors, windows, etc.

I have done a case study over 4 months collected samples and suggested results in my water management project. Included Anaerobic , Aerobic synthesis as one of the solution for the stagnant water.
But the most important part is some chemical industries in Chennai huge corporates started and backed up By DMK ( the ruling govt that time early 2000) is the reason for polluting the Cooum River. The articles and proofs I collected from the online sources and Newspaper cuts we're removed and my laptop had a virus attack so I lost all the Data. ONLY after this incident I checked out their website they had included about the harmless disposal of chemicals into the rivers.
They have dumped all along Pallavaram. Settlements are given money to dump the chemicals because reprocessing requires money to be paid from their pocket.
Google the largest chemical plant in Chennai dig deeper you might know.

Any political party in India that supports the creation of Tamil Eelam would view the Indian government as a anti-Tamil north Indian dominated government if it does not support the creation of Tamil Eelam. Such party will turn Tamilians against the Indian government forcing the government to take extreme measures (use of military or police force against the party leaders). Slowly things could get out of control. This is exactly people like you want. Personally, I wish pro-Tamil eelam people are eliminated from the face of Tamilnadu.
