in the savoyard mountains they used to put vipers in alcohol to consume later but got outlawed in the end of 70s. They didnt eat the snake it was just seasoning basically
I live in Florida and my neighbor has a giant Ackee tree, as long as you let them ripen, and they tend to fall out the tree when ripe anyways, they are quite nice. Also they may be in Florida due to our high Jamaican population and climate. And yes cooked canned ackee can be found on the shelf at the local grocery store lol.

Ooh! Another food weirdness: alligator counts as fish in the eyes of the Catholic Church. Long story short: during Lent (basically, leadup to Easter) Catholics are supposed to abstain from eating meat to one degree or another. However, back on the day the very, _very_ Catholic Spain was a global superpower and also a major consumer/producer of fish, so throttling the entire country of a major source of nutrients and money wasn’t ideal (though there were other reasons more grounded in the faith). Many years later, a priest in America was asked if alligator (which was a not-uncommon food in Louisiana and Florida) counted as meat for the purposes of Lent...and he wanted to be sure, so he passed it up the chain. Then, after a prolonged game of multilingual telephone spanning continents and oceans that presumably left an Italian omega-bishop very confused, it was officially decided that the weird scaly American waterbeasts sounded closer to fish than stuff you found on a farm.
I meant if they ever put themselves in the shoes of another living creature, but ya, I guess the question can be asked with "imagine if you fell prey to a cannibal yourself and decide how you'd like to be cooked" 😂
@@petthequeenofmaddness8592 enough so that we can use a pig's heart for cardiac transplant. Humans would also jave an interesting flavor. The shark fin thing is real and if i remember right they just toss the finless body back in the ocean. It's quite sad. I think the reason it's popular is because people think it's an aphrodisiac.
(just going off channel region) boy am i glad there aren’t any weird foods in romania :) i actually knew about casu mardzu beforehand, i read about it and i’ve kinda been curious ever since. also this model is very nice.
About the shark fin soup, while its true that only the fins are used for the soup, the shark carcass is also used on other type of dishes. At least its a better alternative than people used to do with sharks, back then, they just remove "back fin" and release the shark cause "its much more humane" but they later learned that the missing fin will cause the shark to become disoriented and dies in a slow death. So yeah, better eat the whole thing or not at all.
Important caveat: this is only true for legal shark finning, and even then, that only applies to some countries. Finning and throwing back the rest of the still-alive shark is still VERY much a common practice, considering how storing/transporting the rest of the shark intensely limits potential profit (not that im defending it. Its just that greed is a thing.)
I can attest to aki being grown in Florida, a person who lives down the street from me has an aki tree. I don't think they're taking advantage of their crops though because I'm always finding rotting aki pulp on that particular stretch of sidewalk.

Sharkfin soup is a big reason the shark population is dropping fast, why couldn't they do it with dolphins or orca instead? But yeah banned foods is up there with strange sounding phobias, sounds like a good idea to research until your innocence is lost.
The shark fins were eaten by rich people in my country , because rumor says it good for your health(which is false and acutally is harmful), fortunately people stop eating that couple of decades ago , we just eat their meat . (Taste good BTW)
Italian here: never tried Casu Marzu myself, but according to some friends of mine who tried it, it's quite good! Also there are at least 7 other variants of this cheese in different parts of Italy (Not just in the islands) so there must be something to it I guess... On a different note, another food that is "banned" here is the 'Nduja: a mixture of pork and hot peppers mashed together, mostly eaten on bread slices like butter. Now you will find 'Nduja everywhere in the south, but they won't sell you the stuff made with the original recipe: people would try that and being rushed to the hospital right away, it was that spicy.
and yes they do just cut the fins off then toss the sharks back in, thats why its so horrible, its purely animal cruelty for no other reason than because they can, it wouldnt even be such an issue if the rest of the shark was also consumed in some form, but its not but also, did she just say "why does everyone say florida is like an alien planet, i mean i have seen people wrestle with alligators and go out with machetes" as if that in and of itself doesnt explain exactly why, florida is florida, and no other place is like florida

Still think the shark is worse. They first got their fins sawed off while still conscious, then tossed back into the water to slowly bleed out and drowning (since some shark species can only filter oxygen by actively swimming to push water through it gills). Some oxygen would still go through, so it would be gasping while potentially having other ocean creatures nibbling it body and eating it alive.
