      There is a worship-to-hatred pipeline with many Dream Theater fans, and it was going on before the band hit rock bottom circa 2015-2017. DT is in a bind because people get hooked on their fast, technical passages, and yet those same passages get fatiguing to listen to. Maybe with The Astonishing, they were trying to scale back and do something simpler. Unfortunately, they equated "simple" with "clichéd and cheesy."

      P.S. they really did Derrick Sherinian bad back then. Yes it was obvious that he wasn't the shred master Jordan Rudess was, but he was getting better by the end of the last tour. PLUS, he might have been able to show the band how to continue on a different path of writing good music without all the shredding which was going to fade with age anyway. Perhaps if he was in the band today, DT wouldn't seem so over the hill trying to play licks and passages that Father Time has determined is not for them anymore.

      It's the anger of someone that saw something very beautiful go to waste.
      I can relate to this on a profound level because I've had immense love for DT...they were my favourite band for decades and I played every Petrucci solo I could get my hands on...knew every drum fill by heart etc.
      And when you see something so beautiful being destroyed...of course anger and frustration arise.
      This channel helps me cope with that side of my love-hate-relationship with DT.
      I am very thankful for this channel. The content is genuine and raw and hoenst.

    Jordan Rudess is technically proficient no doubt. But it tends to overpower the rest of the band/rhythm section. Kevin and Derek's parts were more subtle and placed well within the song in my opinion.

    • @AMGU2B
      @AMGU2B 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I fully agree. There are so many "singable" solos and cool atmospheric sections from Derek in just one album (well, two if we count ACOS), and of course Kevin was so unique. Then you have 10+ records with Rudess, and the good moments are so relatively scarce... It's just sad.
      In most cases, Jordan's solos don't do anything for the song at all and feel they have been improvised in one take and that's that (which could be the case given Jordan's undeniably incredible technique). In the worst cases, his solos actually ruin entire songs (for example, A Rite of Passage, to mention one that is very evident). I really love when he plays more self-contained and when his solos feel actually composed after some thought process. But sometimes he -and the band, I guess- is happy with just pulling off some technically impressive solo and leave it as that.

    • @SixStringFiasco
      @SixStringFiasco ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He's ridiculously talented but the biggest gripe among us is that he does these little circus melody solos that kill the whole feel a song has been building up to. Whereas Derek had the guitar-like and raw sound of keys. Moore knew how to be subtle and when to just make something have incredible feel on the keys.

    I enjoy Dream Theater but I´m a critical fan. I agree with your opinion on Labrie´s vocals. But what i want to say is there is no perfect band, every band sucks in some point. Why dream theater´s negatives points is more hated than the negative points by others bands? For example, labrie sucks, but Dave Mustaine is worst. Dave Mustaine even don´t have voice to sing( and i like megadeth). I mean every band "sucks" in some point, every band has bad elements. Do the owner of this channel listen to the old dream theater at least?

      No, I don't listen to the "old" Dream Theater, although that could have a variety of meanings. I respect their work through A Dramatic Turn Of Events other than very subpar live vocals after the food poisoning incident. The 2013 self-titled album is the first completely unacceptable studio album from them due to drum sound.

      He is a whackjob who Jordan Rudess hired to help with a video back in 2013, failing to do any sort of background check. Matthew has a penchant for issuing threats of death and violence to anyone who doesn't support his delusions of being a super-important activist and documentary filmmaker. Myself and Charlie Dominici are among those who have been harassed by Matthew. Jordan eventually removed the Matthew video from his TH-cam channel. There is a story there which Jordan has not told anyone (yet). There is a movie about Matthew which is going to be released soon called Social Media Monster.

      Petrucci is the reason this band has gone downhill. He is the leader with MP out of the pack, and stays inside a narrow, little comfort zone. Won't get a new singer. Won't stop emulating Rush right down to getting Hugh Syme to do most album artwork. Won't vary up his guitar tone. Puts out 200 signature guitars that don't bring anything new to the table. The Crapstonishing was his attempt at an "experimental" album and ended up being one of the worst albums in history. I guess he's just not capable of innovative thought.
