- Second Round of Pubs Past and Present, this time walking all of Halifax Road. Sadly, it's very much pubs in the past and nothing else.
Some of the buildings still exist until going past Lob Mill where railway and roads were responsible for whole streets and buildings to be demolished, including a number of pubs. As you watch you'll see me becoming more and more confused as to where the pubs once were. Any help appreciated.
As always, we follow the map in Barbara Rudman's Todmorden Pub Trail.
Which of the lost pubs on Halifax Road do you remember?
I loved this video and remember visiting a couple of the old pubs in the 70’s!
Thanks very much 😊
Born and Bred in Todmorden, eventually leaving in the early eighties. I spent many happy hours with friends at possibly all of these pubs at one time or another during my much younger days. One of the most popular pubs I visited was THE ROSE and CROWN ran by Tony and Gina Lyons. Fond memories of many years gone by.
Thanks for the comment. It was only before I set out to film today that I realised the entire stretch of pubs I was covering had all gone. 😕
Great video, difficult task for you on Halifax road……along with many of my age spent some great nights in the pubs seen today. Shame about the Woodman just left to rot.
Cheers. Yeah it is a shame. Not sure why it's just left like that.
Very interesting video matt. So sad to see that these pubs didn’t survive.
Cheers 😊 yeah, it's extraordinary that they're all gone.
Great video❤
Glad you liked it!!
The New Inn was exactly where you first said at the bottom left of Stackhills Road. I remember it well!
Phew ..I got one right anyway 😅
That was really interesting Matt, no idea there were so many pubs! and please consider doing one of the churches of Todmorden?
Cheers 😊 and yes, I think I will. Once more, a lot of long demolished buildings to locate I'd guess
I think you will find that Lobb Mill was also a pub ( and mortuary) at some time in the 1800’s. It was called the Haul Inn ( guessing at the spelling - could be Hall Inn.)
Thanks for the info. Very interesting 🙂
@@matparks08 I lived there for a number of years up to the start of the millennium. The stories I was told .indicated that the cellar was used initially as a mortuary ( during the building of the canal) and later as a pub on the ground floor, and a slaughter house in the basement. I was told that the landlord used to heavily salt his meat pies, so that his regulars drank more beer.
I opened the first canal side / related business in over 100 years which was called Lobb Mill Chandlers. Sadly, after getting flooded in the Todmorden flood, we were forced to close.
I have very fond memories of Lobb Mill and also Tod.
Remember the woodmans, had a few in there
Cheers for the comment. Yeah, sad to see it in this state really.
More remarkable than the pubs were the Landlords the Rose and Crown springs to mind with Stuart Croften and Old dog 😬
Yeah, I've heard some stories 😉
The Shannon and Chesapeake my nanna Doris Law was landlady here in the 1960's to early 1970's
She gets a mention in the green book 👍🙂 she left the pub to become a shop owner in Wellington rd .🙂
Thanks for that. I'll have a look 😊
