    I've got one if these auger drill bits too and agree with your review. I bought one last year for a community planting project at my workplace and it really helped us to get 1,000 bulbs into the ground quickly. I know what you mean about it wanting to turn on you and yank your wrist if you're not careful. Going slowly in tough ground helps. Excellent video - I bet your family will feel so proud when they see their bulbs flower in early spring.

      @@gwenyngruffydd that and 1kg of wildflower seeds! It took a small team of volunteers 2 sessions. Sadly, our estates department mowed over it during lockdown 🙈 despite them being involved in the project and me ordering an (overpriced) barrier to be put up around it. I'll try again next year!

      Gwenyn Gruffydd it worked well but I found you have to be careful not to get soil into the vent holes in the drill like I did !! I’ll be using it for bulb planting next week.

    Those augers are great, mate! I use the extra handle on my DeWALT cordless drill and it doesn't wrench my wrist too much if I dig into clayey soil. (BTW, as much as I enjoy watching you and learning from your channel I think that your Mrs is better looking, though being a bloke I'm probably a bit biased.)

    Gwenyn, Have you tried using your auger as a tiller? Just put t he auger into the soil and stir it around as if you were stirring a very large can of paint. I use mine to incorporate compost, well decayed mulch or additives such as 'blood and bone' after harvesting everything from one of my garden beds. I bought my first auger online as you did, but have found that here in Australia we can get them at Bunnings warehouses. Brand name is 'Suttons' and they are available in 450 x 50, 75,100 & 150mm. I've found that the 50mm is good for stakes used to support garden edging or pressure treated pine sleepers used for raised beds.

    • @gwenyngruffydd
      @gwenyngruffydd  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a great idea! I didn't think of that! Can see that would work really well for mixing the soil and compost up!
      waw a 150mm auger! Does that fit your hand drill?

    • @shinsanhughes629
      @shinsanhughes629 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gwenyngruffyddI'm sure a 150mm (6") auger could but used, though probably be best with the larger drills, and you'd definitely need to use the extra handle. All the the augers I've seen at Bunnings have 450mm (18") shafts but if that's all you need the 150mm could also be used for posts of that size. I use the 100mm attached to a DeWalt DCD996N-XE Hammer Drill with a 4a.h. battery for tilling. I could use one of my 6 a.h. or 12 a.h. Flexvolt batteries but I like to have the occasional tea-break.

    You have great soil! Mine is extremely hard clay - difficult to drill into. What settings /speeds did you find most effective for drilling holes? I need to drill holes a bit depper about 12 inches and I'm finding it impossible because there is so much old root matter in the ground. Auger keeps getting stuck and drill overheats. I also think I may need to get a new battery for my drill because it's only lasting like 30 minutes

    • @gwenyngruffydd
      @gwenyngruffydd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have heavy clay too but it’s wet. Makes it a lot easier.
      I find fast speed works best.
      Roots will be a problem. You’ll need to dig that by hand! 😅

    Terrific! great review! Lovely to see your beautiful family helping out too! I planted loads of Spring bulbs around my garden too.
    Spring bulbs to include Mascari and crocuses give bees loads of pollen but for the narcissi they mostly ignore those. I also planted a few really early flowering shrubs too.
    The best one I’ve found is the Lonicera Fragrantissima . Bees go nuts on it and it flowers February March/Aprill. I think it would do really well where you are! Try it, you won’t be disappointed! Keep up the gréât videos!!

      Gwenyn Gruffydd you can pick them up as small plants, they grow quite large in about 5 years but their a member of the honeysuckle family. They root in really well and done mine a hard haircut in late spring when finished flowering! Will pm you you some pics of their flowers so you can see
