Purdue guy here. We have a young team so it is tough to quibble with individual matchups because we haven't seen the current Purdue players play at the level they'll be expected next year. Coach Painter does a great job with the talent he has, which will be a huge factor in performance next year.

Indiana's roster looks a lot better on paper. But the main difference is that Purdue is often better than the sum of their parts, and Indiana is not. It's a 5v5 game, not 5 1v1 games.

@@JTH-hm8ew No doubt UNC would win that argument. They would win against pretty much anyone. But that is probably because they started paying players 30 years ago. That helps in recruiting. Look at what NIL is doing now days. It would be 100 times greater 30 years ago.
It also helped that they were given a, very good, degree without ever showing up for class because lets be honest. Your a basketball school. There is no way it was only the football kids getting to skip. Regardless the resume is far superior. You are correct. Congrats.

Here’s the problem comparing stats from guys that played on other teams last season and guys that were featured options vs guys that were all on Purdue playing complimentary roles to the NPOY… Galloway was a starter and played 33 min per game on a bad Indiana team. Colvin was like a 10 min per game guy and with Edey’s usage rate it made it tough for anyone else to put up huge numbers. That’s not to say they can’t as sophomores though. Both Colvin and Heide were pretty efficient but it takes a lot of projecting when comparing someone like Colvin or Heide to a guy like Galloway when you’ve seen what Galloway is as a starter and 33 min per game guy.

I think with Purdue's roster, there are lots of unknowns. Will Berg could be a good 7 footer, and they have a backup 7ft3 freshman. Camden heidi, and Colvin are both athletic, long, and good shooters, they could be really good. I think TKR still plays the 4, maybe he improves his 3 point shooting. Braden and Fletcher are known commodities, and Gicari Harris probably only needa to play 5 minuted a game behind Braden. I think kanon has a lot of potential, and by the end if the year really good, but I think he may be a bit raw of a player still. Pretty much all of Purdue players are good 3 point shooters outside the center position, and all capable defenders. Really balanced team, just without a superstsr.

This is the first season in a long time for the Boilers that they're going to improve SIGNIFICANTLY throughout the season. Not only are they young, but they have guys who are either true freshmen or haven't played big minutes before. Plus Painter will almost certainly change the offensive structure next year, abandoning the low post focus and switching to a Baby Boiler style with more spacing. TKR is a good post scorer, but they're going to have much better scoring guards and wings like Smith, Colvin, Heide, Loyer, and Catchings.

CJ Cox is a 6’2” combo guard he’s not going to play the 3. Very loosely categorizing I would say:
    1/2: Smith, Harris, Cox
    2/3: Loyer, Colvin, Benter
    3/4: Heide, Catchings
4/5: TKR, Furst, Burgess, Berg, Jacobsen

ok so let's take a step back here for a moment comparing Purdue and IU.
I realize that Evan Miya player rankings aren't perfect but neither is blindly looking at stats because of good stats mid team type of things... but here we go
    IU's player 2023-2024 Evanmiya ranking (674 average)
    Ballo 44
    Mgbako 250
    Galloway 285
    Myles Rice 387
    Malik Reneau 405
    Luke Goode 522
    Anthony Leal 1053
    Kanaan Carlyle 1171
    Gabe Cupps 1953
    Purdue (421 average)
    Smith 6
    Fletcher Loyer 112
    TKR 259
    Heide 658
    Colvin 659*
    Furst 838
*Colvin technically shows no data, but similar to Heide. Both in top ten of P6 Freshmen for eFG%. Colvin actually lowers the average here so it's not helping Purdue
Purdue's returners actually beat out the rankings of these great transfers. The segment putting a lof of emphasis on Reneau stats but he still is only ranked 405.
For this exercise, I don't include Catchings/Tucker since they don't have rankings but they are similar rated recruits. Basically a wash for this conversation
    Wildcard:
Gicarri just won the Iverson 3 pt contest, has handles and could be a dawg.
Berg has battled with Edey for 2 years now and didn't get PT due to the B2B POTY playing in front of him.
The other part here is that Loyer is ELITE at what he is expected to do, shoot 3's and make them. Number 2 in the B1G behind Gillis for all individuals averaging 3 attempts per game. He's close to double Galloway's 3 pt% which, from the guard spot, is absolutely huge. We also talk about the creation that Galloway has, but Loyer doesn't need that to be effective in his role as he can entry pass and Smith handles creation.
You might look at this and think "yeah but if you only take the top 5, IU is better averaged". Truth here, but also a truth is that everyone isn't going 40 minutes here.
I think the last part to think about IS the large recruiting class though. Purdue is bringing in 6 guys and expecting Berg to make a jump as well. If Purdue only needs 2 more guys to contribute there, that's pretty good odds on finding that dude amongst the 7. IU bringing in 1 recruit that they hope is effective immediately, otherwise they drop off real fast.
Basically, what the synopsis of this is that 1:1, IU players may beat Purdue. As a team? Purdue has the better roster to fit roles.
Lastly- Cox would not be the option before Jack Benter or Gicarri based on film/recruiting profile

We know what Indiana has from the portal and what these players can do. However, I would take Purdue's roster over Indiana's any day! I believe we are going to be just as good if not better than we were last year because we have way more athletic ability basketball talent, we are just young and that will be the only hindrance. Will Berg will not be Zack Edey next year but we don't need that we've got at least three guys that are over 40 inch vertical leapers who will show incredible athleticism next year against any team that they play. it didnt look very tantalizing in the champ game. hiede is a great leaper and can hit an open three. he does not do much off the dribble. he is ok defensively, but is going to need a significant jump if he is starting. colvin has a great shot, and can do a bit more off the dribble at this point. he definitely improved defensively as the year progressed. if i was picking a player to vastly improve it would be him. where i think the sleepers guys and many purdue fans are wrong is that they think braden smith is the undisputed best player between both teams and therefore purdue will be good because of that. i think smith is a fine player, but to be that cut and dry about it is hilarious to me. smith can much more easily be taken out of a game than edey and thats where purdue is gonna have to get creative next year if they want to keep their current standard.their floor will be much lower imo. even when they didnt play well lasy year they pretty much still were able to win. they got 5 offensive rebounds a game from a single player! thats crazy. they shot so many free throws because one player was a foul magnet. like how will this team get to the line, which was a big reason their offense was so efficient? they basically still only have one guy who can penetrate and he is not the fleetest of foot. call me skeptical of purdue next season. doesnt mean it will be indiana taking over. i just think the league is much more open this coming season

And IU got Goode who is a knockdown three-point shooter who will be playing his 5th season. Miles Rice was fantastic his freshman of year in Pac 12. Mac won the same award in the Big 10. Yes Purdue has a really good recruiting class, but REMEMBER, young teams are NOT succeeding well in this day and age of College Basketball. Kentucky had the top class last year, and what happened? THEY LOST FIRST ROUND IF THE NCAA TOURNAMENT. Purdue doesn’t have Zach Edey anymore, and they lost players to the transfer portal. So yes, it is clear Indiana has the better team and PROVEN talent, while Purdue is going to have a bunch of players that have NOT played CBB yet, not saying Purdue will be a bad team, but Purdue is NOT a top 10 or 15 team until they prove it otherwise. I think these guys don't understand Painter. Berg will be the 5. TKR will be the 4. Heide will be the 3 Loyer will be the 2 and Smith the 1. Harris will back up Smith. Colvin will back up Loyer and Heide. Catchings will be the primary back up at 4 and some at 3. Berg at 5 with Furst as the back up. Benter, Cox, Jacobsen will RS. Burgess will be possible RS but could see some minutes at 4/5. He has a college body. Is fast and can shoot 3s. But freshmen have trouble understanding the complexity of Painter's defense.
IU always looks like they have a better roster until Purdue kicks their butts. Same thing this year. Talent is one component of the roster. Playing together, understand the offense and defense schemes and having offense and defense schemes that work are huge in college basketball. Talent rules in the NBA but if that was the case Calipari would still be at KY.

Last year you guys constantly picked our opponents to win bc of "guard play" every time we played against another top 25 team. Smith and Loyer would then outplay and out preform said guards, every time. TKR, Smith, Loyer, Furst, Hiede, and Berg all returning and we add more athletic talent than Painter has ever had team wide! TKR, Furst, Berg can platoon the 5 depending upon match-ups. Harris, Jacobsen, Catchings, and Benter (severely underrated at 3* should be a 4*) all bring shooting and rim attacking abilities. I understand that on paper iu has bought a good team but I'm looking at coaching and culture. Rice averaged almost 15 a game in the PAC12 last year and is a much better athlete than Smith, plus he's probably got 4 inches on him. IU has potentially several future NBA players and Purdue has perhaps one with Catchings as long as his game can translate to the next level. '22-'23 season, when IU had an elite guard (Hood-Schifino) and center (TJD) they lost both games to IU and back then the rest of IU's roster wasn't that great. @corsmalls I will not pump the brakes on Newton. Everyone else is without ever watching videos on him , from games to pickup games and interviews. He says he is 100% back health wise and it has been plenty of time for him to be fully healthy.
They handled his injuries like they would a budding superstar for a reason. He broke most weight lifting records when arrived last summer before they realized he needed another surgery to repair damage missed in his first surgery.
He still showed his 43" vertical between surgeries last summer. He also comes in at 6'3" to 6'4" with a 6'10" wing span. He was one of his HS teams primary ball handlers and scorers on a team that had Stephon Castle who is likely a lottery pick this year. He has an easy repeatable shooting stroke and the mentality to be a shutdown defender as well as a primary scorer.
Saying he is one of our top 3 bench options is not going out on any limb.
The kid is an absolute driven beast. He will transition to this level as fast as any freshman but is not going to have to be depended on because of all the talent around him.
When Newton signed to IU he was moving up fast in his class rankings and got up to 42. He often matched Castle his junior season before injury then missed his pre senior season in AAU and his senior year in HS and he was forgotten about by those talent evaluators.

I would argue JHS and Galloway have made tremendous jumps in Woodson’s system. That’s even with Trey playing out of position last year.
Woodson’s black cloud the last 3 years is his investment in X. Johnson.
Woodson’s system is predicated on wing pick and rolls and post feeds.
The only time he had a 3 level play making guard IU was a top 15 team

Galloway and Carlyle >>> Loyer and Colvin
Not sure what Greg sees there

Galloway is NOT better than Loyer except for dribbling which Loyer doesn't really need.

They said that when Ivey and Trevion left too. And when Swanigan left, we jumped from 19th in Kenpom to 5th the year after. Said we'd be gone after Carsen left.
