I believe the story goes they were given a budget for the video, then took the money and filmed it themselves in the backyard and had a big party. And I believe the song had its roots in an old folk song and later put together and recorded in the 1930's, often attributed to the blues artist Lead Belly. Then Ram Jam made their version here. Pretty sure it's actually considerably longer, but this is the version that seemed more common on the radio.
It actually goes back much further, like centuries, and was supposedly about a gun called a black betty that was notoriously bad. Black betty's child that goes wild was originally a bullet that goes astray 'cause the gun was so bad
Black betty, a slang term for a bottle of Whiskey that comes from Scotland and Norther England. The term is used in a book from the early 1700's. In the US many think it become slang for moonshine.
There weren't many vids in the 70s. The story goes this band pestered the label for money for a video...the label relented and gave them 400 bucks. They spent 300 on weed and 100 on the video...a backyard with friends...😅😅😅 btw, the song is an old,old blues tune. Some say it was related to prison, some say whiskey.
@francisconti9085 I believe led belly was first to record it, but from what I've read, the song pre-dates him and the term "black betty" was slang for many different things throughout history.

That's awesome
@@ImFrancis01 - The full version is several minutes longer and it’s mostly, if not all, a much longer guitar solo.
